#13: I CAN'T BREATHE !!!

Immediately one sees this topic, the first thing that comes to mind is George Floyd (may His gentle soul rest in peace). But really,I cannot breathe, the environment I live in is chocking and I need help! Please read on as I pour out my heart.

One may ask why I'm sounding this way, this is it: It is pathetic to say that my community is amongst the top five (5) busiest communities in my local government area, but it turns out to be that community where heaps of trash are disposed in inappropriate places. My community is situated at IBB road in Uyo. Yes, It is really an eyesore, awful in smell and disgusting! It is that bad. Surprisingly, people still sell fruits and snacks around this area even though it looks and smells as awful as it does.

Often times, the state of my environment captured in the image you see above is the case during the rainy season. What do you expect when there are no incinerators in communities as busy as mine?
When there is downpour, the wastes are transported to different corners of the road by runoffs, this makes the environment dirty and sometimes impassible for pedestrians.

Few months ago, I saw a warning post from the government restricting disposal of waste along the roadside; but trust humans, it felt like the post was saying the exact opposite of what they intended (I guess the residents saw "please dump refuse here." LOL). I know different questions must have crossed their minds like: "where else will I dump my waste?". Do you think it's a harmless question? Well, to respond to this, I must say: it is the government's duty to provide incinerators in all settlements, especially the very populated ones, just like mine.
Sadly, most of the places that I've visited in my locality lack incinerators and this is a cause for worry.

Now, my first question is this: what should be done?
Another question is; if the government is aware but doesn't act accordingly, what should the citizens do?
For me, I think an alternative solution is to dig a pit for disposing these wastes.

I'm invested in eradicating this issue of improper waste disposal due to unavailable incinerators in my locality.

Why do I have so much interest? Let me give you just a little feel of the effect of this situation on us: People caught up with illnesses like cholera, dysentery, typhoid and just to mention a few every now and then, and yes, you guess right this wrong disposal of waste is the devil behind all of these.

I'll end by saying this, the environment is not safe if it is polluted, remember, HEALTH IS WEALTH.

Inmediatamente uno ve este tema, lo primero que le viene a la mente es George Floyd (que su gentil alma descanse en paz). Pero en realidad, no puedo respirar, el entorno en el que vivo se está ahogando y necesito ayuda. Por favor, sigan leyendo mientras derramo mi corazón.

Uno puede preguntarse por qué estoy sonando de esta manera, esto es todo: Es patético decir que mi comunidad está entre las cinco (5) comunidades más concurridas de mi área de gobierno local, pero resulta ser esa comunidad donde se tiran montones de basura en lugares inapropiados. Mi comunidad está situada en la carretera IBB de Uyo. Sí, es realmente una monstruosidad, un olor horrible y un asco. Es así de malo. Sorprendentemente, la gente sigue vendiendo frutas y bocadillos alrededor de esta zona a pesar de que el aspecto y el olor son tan horribles.

A menudo, el estado de mi entorno captado en la imagen que ves arriba es el caso durante la temporada de lluvias. ¿Qué se puede esperar cuando no hay incineradoras en comunidades tan concurridas como la mía?

Hace unos meses, vi un mensaje de advertencia del gobierno que restringía el vertido de residuos en los bordes de la carretera; pero, créanme, parecía que el mensaje decía exactamente lo contrario de lo que pretendían (supongo que los residentes veían "por favor, tiren la basura aquí".) Sé que se les habrán pasado por la cabeza diferentes preguntas como "¿dónde más voy a tirar mis residuos?". ¿Creen que es una pregunta inofensiva? Bueno, para responder a esto, debo decir: es obligación del gobierno proporcionar incineradores en todos los asentamientos, especialmente en los muy poblados, como el mío.
Lamentablemente, la mayoría de los lugares que he visitado en mi localidad carecen de incineradores y esto es motivo de preocupación.

Ahora, mi primera pregunta es la siguiente: ***¿Qué hay que hacer?
Otra pregunta es: si el gobierno es consciente pero no actúa en consecuencia, ¿qué deben hacer los ciudadanos?
Para mí, una solución alternativa es cavar una fosa para eliminar estos residuos.

Estoy interesado en erradicar este problema de la eliminación inadecuada de residuos debido a la falta de incineradoras en mi localidad.
¿Por qué tengo tanto interés? Permítanme darles una pequeña idea del efecto de esta situación en nosotros: La gente se contagia de enfermedades como el cólera, la disentería, la fiebre tifoidea y, por mencionar algunas, de vez en cuando.
