A Night Without Electricity Turned into a Family Outing Outside the City

Paseo Familiar 💡

Family Walk 💡

[English Version]

Many times we feel tense and somewhat annoyed by various circumstances that do not depend on us, a very clear example is that the electric service fails, something quite common in Venezuela, unfortunately it is common that we do not have this important service for several hours during the day, we do not know when the electricity can leave our homes nor how long it will last that "blackout", this causes quite frustration and anger, especially by the fact of living on a floor number 16 where I have to go down or up the stairs carrying my daughter of 18 kg on my back. Honestly, my wife and I think several times before going up the stairs when the building is dark, sometimes we decide to go upstairs, but other times we decide to go for an impromptu visit to my mother's house or to the in-laws' house.

Today I want to share with you one of those many days when we arrived at the apartment and seeing it in the dark due to the lack of electrical service we decided to take a detour and go somewhere else, this time, we decided to go to my in-laws, but later plans changed to a walk to the other end of the city.

After our chores, we arrived hungry at the building where we live, however, when we parked our vehicle and walked to the elevator we observed how the lights went out in the blink of an eye. Without power, tired, hungry and after thinking for a few minutes, we decided to go somewhere else to wait for the power to be restored, my in-laws' house was the decision for that occasion.

We literally arrived as a surprise, my in-laws and brother-in-laws were not expecting our visit, but were happy to see us. Our daughter is a restless and very active child, having her in our house without electricity is much more exhausting because she gets bored very easily, with my in-laws and with our niece, Camila has a lot of fun, so we were all somehow overwhelmed by the electrical situation but happy to have a space to come to in this kind of situations.

It was time for dinner and we all decided to get together and buy roast chicken to eat together as a family, however, in the middle of the delicious dinner, you can imagine what happened... no electricity again!

We had no electricity in our home and neither in the house where we were fleeing from that situation, it was really frustrating. At times we didn't know what to do, either sit there and wait until the power was restored, or we had the option of going up hundreds of stairs to our apartment, or do something different while we were outside.

In the darkness of my in-laws' living room we were planning what to do, Camila was starting to get bored and the situation was tense because we all have obligations, commitments and chores that are accumulating due to the lack of energy. At that moment we decided to take a deep breath, not to think about it and go for a walk around the city.

My vehicle is small, however, we were all able to get in and we decided to just go for a walk and look for a place where we could distract ourselves, talk and above all where the girls could have fun. When we left many of the streets were in darkness and one of the public places we decided to visit also had no electricity supply, so we went to the outskirts of the city to a park called "El Cardenalito", a public place with an interesting decoration and a very colorful restaurant, that was the place where we decided to hang out to wait for the restoration of electricity service.

A Monument at the Entrance of the City

One of the monuments that welcomes travelers in our city is the word Barquisimeto in brick structures, it is a monument that already has a long time and in the case of many Barquisimetanos and visitors is common to approach to take some pictures under these giant letters. Unfortunately our phones were discharged and we could not capture that moment as we would have liked.

After a short stay in this iconic place of the city, we decided to walk through the park, which was affected by the electric service and some areas were dark and others were quite illuminated (what a surprise). We arrived at a new restaurant located in this same park called El Tren, we had never visited it and it made a very good impression on us, however, we had already eaten there and were satisfied so we decided to spend another day at this restaurant.

Inside that restaurant there is a small park for children, so it is a very good option to go with the family, my daughter Camila is very excited about parks, especially when there are many children playing in it, that was the case this time. We went with my brother-in-law's daughter too, smaller than Camila, but that did not affect her to enjoy big time in that small park.

Back to the Light

After almost 5 hours of waiting, it was a message that we needed to receive, and we immediately got into the car to leave my in-laws at their house to later arrive at our apartment. I remember that on the way we were remembering anecdotes and joking, so the journey to our homes was full of laughter and laughter.

Finally we arrived at our house and Camila fell asleep peacefully after lying down on her bed, we were tired, but happy with how well this improvised trip went and we decided to rest without the stress and frustration of the past hours.

What lessons can I learn from this experience?

Many things overwhelm us every day, it could be financial problems or electrical service failures that make us unable to be productive, so many situations can make us lose our heads from one moment to another, however, having the support of the family in these situations is important for our mental health.

In our case we were going with the bitterness that left us unable to comfortably reach our apartment, but we were able to transform those moments of bitterness into laughter when visiting our relatives, perhaps many are far from their families, but a simple call can gladden the heart and change a moment of anger for a feeling of joy.

Unfortunately we continue with the failures of this important service, which has affected my publications in the community and also in the activities in Discord, that really continues bothering me, but in some occasions I can rest mentally a little and not think so much in the problems when going to visit our dear family.
