Las películas bélicas son de esas producciones en las que nos hace reflexionar sobre nuestra historia como especie, además, de mirar en un espejo ese desenfrenado deseo por destruirnos mutuamente. Me agradan estas producciones, ya que se mezcla la acción con el drama en un contexto histórico en el que muchos han dejado su vida sobre el campo de batalla, todo debido a las pretensiones de poder de alguien más. Sea cual sea el momento histórico, las guerras son parte de nuestra naturaleza y estas películas nos acercan tan solo un poco de los que significaría los horrores de un conflicto armado.
Este es un remake de un filme estadounidense de 1930 y al igual que esta nueva versión de casi 90 años de diferencia, busca proyectar un mensaje desgarrador que muestre lo terrible que fue en este caso la primera gran guerra mundial. En mi caso esperé algunas semanas hasta el estreno de esta película, veía desde el tráiler que podía ser un excelente trabajo filmográfico y ansiosamente contaba los días para su estreno y en definitiva la película no decepciona en ese sentido y podría decirse que es un digno film para mantenerse algunas semanas en el Top de popularidad en Netflix, siempre deseoso de compartir mi opinión con esta grandiosa comunidad.
Hemos visto una gran cantidad de películas que normalmente nos cuentan la historias de un bando, este filme se enfoca en una historia de unos jóvenes alemanes, por supuesto, sin justificar o idealizar de alguna manera el conflicto, solamente nos adentramos en la historia de algunos jóvenes que en un principio estaban deseosos de ir al frente a defender su país.
Al final de la Primera Guerra Mundial
El filme se desarrolla justo al final de esa primera gran guerra, justamente en 1918, en donde incluso, nos muestran fragmentos sobre aquella histórica negociación y capitulación de Alemania en un tren, donde se firmaría el famoso tratado de Versalles, sin embargo, a diferencia de otras películas o documentales, nos desplazamos al bando alemán para ver el asunto desde esa perspectiva, algo que en lo particular me pareció muy interesante.
Jóvenes Deseosos de Pelear en Batalla
La historia se centra en un grupo de jóvenes alemanes, mostrando una introducción en donde observamos estos personajes como cualquier otro grupo de jóvenes, bromeando y llenos de vida, con el firme deseo de sentir la adrenalina, de ir a la batalla, deleitarse con el sabor de la victoria para ser recordados como héroes al menos esa era la propaganda que se esparcía en la juventud para poder reclutar a más soldados a ir a morir en una trinchera.
Todo este recorrido es el pilar de este filme, desde que los jóvenes alegres y entusiasmados comienzan a ser parte del ejército, con charlas patrióticamente motivadoras, hasta que comienzan a saborear las amarga realidad de lo que significa la guerra.
Desde lo más simple como no realizar una orden en el tiempo adecuado, hasta presenciar el frío abrazo de la muerte, mezclado con el temor de que pueden dejar de respirar en cualquier momento sufriendo una espantosa muerte. Todo esto va jugando un papel fundamental dentro de la trama, con cada personaje acentuándose de manera distinta, pero llevando a cabo esa sensación de que "no es lo que pensaban", la lucha encarnecida, disparos, desmembramientos, angustias, todo hace un efecto psicológico que termina por derrumbar la mente de uno de sus personajes, pero ya se encuentran en el sitio más oscuro y peligroso del planeta, no hay vuelta atrás más allá de seguir las órdenes de sus superiores.
Una guerra Cruel
Particularmente opino que este es uno de los conflictos más crueles, un suceso que debemos recordar y avergonzarnos como especie, por decir algo, una de las armas preferidas de ambos bandos era el gas venenoso, un gas que simplemente quemaba los pulmones y el soldado sufría una muerte terriblemente dolorosa, otro aspecto resaltante es la utilización de lanzallamas. Imaginar que un amigo, compañero o cualquier persona sea quemada viva es sin dudas un evento que causa estragos en la mente. Esto es abarcado en el filme, por supuesto, con limitaciones. No es posible realizar una producción mostrando los verdaderos horrores de la guerra, ya que nadie podría verla sin desmayarse o vomitar mientras se observa la cruda realidad de una batalla, por esa misma razón, los soldados de las grandes guerras terminan con problemas psicológicos y depresión, al presenciar algo al que ser humano no está preparado, ver su propia crueldad.
Sin Novedad en el Frente
Algo que en un principio me parecía un punto negativo, era el propio título del filme, cuya frase no parece muy entretenida, al decirla en voz alta, no parece que pudiese ser un título adecuado para una película donde se verá acción en batalla, parece un título pasivo y poco llamativo, normalmente esperamos un título que haga saltar las emociones y que atrape al espectador, sin embargo, luego de observar el filme se puede deducir muy fácilmente la razón de este título que a mi parecer era desabrido en una primera instancia.
El filme se desarrolla en la que la historia llama "la guerra de las trincheras", una guerra caracterizada por esos largos laberintos bajo tierra que cavaban los soldados para mantener una posición estratégica, ahora bien, en esta situación donde los dos bandos cavan una infinidad de trincheras el combate se limita a unos pocos cientos de metros, es decir, esos combates tan feroces tenían como objetivo tan solo ganar unos metros, las vidas de miles de soldados se desvanecían para tan solo para saltar a la siguiente trinchera que seguramente estaba muy cerca de la posición inicial.
En el filme observaremos estos indicios para que el espectador sepa que la película gira en círculos desde un punto de vista de escenografía, básicamente se llega a un punto en donde esas interminables batallas se realizan en dos o tres lugares solamente, haciendo referencia a esa guerra de trincheras en la que se conquistaban una y otra vez dejando un camino de muerte al rededor.
Por momentos pensamos que las batallas ocurren en distintos sectores, pero el filme luego nos otorga la sorpresa de que todo ocurre muy cerca, casi en el mismo sitio, eso nos coloca en una situación donde podemos reflexionar sobre el coste humano para simplemente ganar algunos metros en el campo de batalla.
"Sin Novedad en el Frente" hace referencia a que a pesar de todas las vidas perdidas en las encarnecidas batallas, todo sigue relativamente igual.
Actuaciones y Personajes
El personaje principal (Paul Bäumer) es interpretado por el joven austriaco Felix Kammerer, desde mi punto de vista lo hace bastante bien para el poco recorrido filmográfico que tiene este actor, es de esos trabajos que pueden impulsar significativamente su carrera en la industria audiovisual, seguramente le veremos en otras producciones en los próximos años. El joven hace un buen papel, una evolución interesante y hasta el final, el personaje hace lo propio para mantenernos frente a la pantalla a la expectativa.
A pesar de que básicamente observamos caras poco conocidas en el medio, tenemos un actor que ya hemos visto anteriormente, de hecho, uno de sus personajes más recordados es precisamente dentro de una película bélica, es Daniel Brühl a quien en lo particular lo recuerdo interpretando al soldado Fredrick Zoller en el film Bastardos Sin Gloria, una de mis películas favoritas de este género. Su interpretación es corta, pero precisa, un personaje muy importante, a pesar de que cuenta con pocos minutos en la pantalla con una interpretación adecuada desde mi punto de vista.
Me parece que hay personajes secundarios muy buenos, le otorgan una buena esencia al filme y hacen que el mensaje se trasmita correctamente, haciendo que las emociones florezcan en muchas escenas a lo largo del filme.
Fotografía y efectos especiales
Siempre estoy atento a los aspectos técnicos de este tipo de filmes, me parece que el trabajo es llevado correctamente, donde la primera secuencia de escenas sirve para captar la atención del espectador, ya desde la primera escena sabemos que el filme nos presentará un trabajo impecable.
Me agrada la oscuridad en el campo de batalla, el humo rodeando ese terreno lleno de muerte, la lluvia, el lodo, todo son aspectos históricos correctos que casi podemos sentirlos, por momentos podemos sentir la angustia de algunos que esperan el momento de defender su trinchera.
Posee buenos efectos especiales, no algo muy impresionante ni es un aspecto, por lo cual se recordará este filme, sin embargo, la utilización es correcta y en el aspecto técnico nos entrega un trabajo bastante completo desde mi humilde opinión.

Me agradan este tipo de filmes, sobre todo, cuando entregan un mensaje reflexivo sobre la guerra, quizás al producir muchas películas de esta índole, podamos ir cambiando nuestra perspectiva sobre un conflicto armado que muchos en el planeta, lamentablemente están viviendo en carne propia. Quizás así como estos jóvenes alemanes en la película, muchos piensan en la acción y adrenalina de una batalla, sin embargo, todo cambia en la mente al ver la cruda realidad frente a sus ojos.
En lo particular me ha gustado, diciendo que tengo cierta debilidad por este tipo de filmes que en ocasiones puede nublar algo de mi juicio, pero en general, me parece un filme que puede estar entre lo mejor del año, al menos dentro de este género que es tan aclamado por la crítica.
¿La Recomiendo?
Me parecen un filme correcto en muchos sentidos y que logra mantener la atención hasta el final, otorgando un buen entretenimiento para un público generalizado. Creo que es una película para ver con algunos amigos y opinar tanto sobre la producción como de esos trágicos eventos en la historia, ideal para los que les gusta el género bélico, yo se la recomendaría a muchas personas, ya que el entretenimiento desde mi punto de vista está garantizado.

I like these productions, as they mix action with drama in a historical context in which many have left their lives on the battlefield, all because of someone else's claim to power. Whatever the historical moment, wars are part of our nature and these films give us just a glimpse of the horrors of armed conflict.
This is a remake of an American film from 1930 and like this new version almost 90 years apart, it seeks to project a heart-rending message that shows how terrible the first great world war was in this case. In my case I waited a few weeks until the release of this film, I saw from the trailer that it could be an excellent film work and anxiously counted the days for its release and ultimately the film does not disappoint in that sense and could be said to be a worthy film to stay a few weeks in the Top of popularity on Netflix, always eager to share my opinion with this great community.
We have seen a lot of films that usually tell us the stories of one side, this film focuses on a story of some young Germans, of course, without justifying or idealising the conflict in any way, we just get into the story of some young men who were initially eager to go to the front to defend their country.
At the end of the First World War
The film takes place right at the end of that first great war, precisely in 1918, where we are even shown fragments of that historic negotiation and capitulation of Germany on a train, where the famous Treaty of Versailles was signed, however, unlike other films or documentaries, we move to the German side to see the issue from that perspective, something that in particular I found very interesting.

This whole journey is the mainstay of this film, from the time the happy and enthusiastic young men begin to be part of the army, with patriotic motivational talks, until they begin to taste the bitter reality of what war is all about.
From the simple things like not carrying out an order at the right time, to witnessing the cold embrace of death, mixed with the fear that they may stop breathing at any moment and suffer a gruesome death. All this plays a fundamental role in the plot, with each character accentuating in a different way, but carrying out the feeling that "it's not what they thought", the fierce fighting, shooting, dismemberment, anguish, everything makes a psychological effect that ends up collapsing the mind of one of the characters, but they are already in the darkest and most dangerous place on the planet, there is no turning back beyond following the orders of their superiors.
A Cruel War
I particularly think that this is one of the cruelest conflicts, an event that we should remember and be ashamed of as a species, to say something, one of the preferred weapons of both sides was poison gas, a gas that simply burned the lungs and the soldier suffered a terribly painful death, another highlight is the use of flamethrowers. Imagining a friend, comrade or anyone else being burned alive is undoubtedly an event that wreaks havoc on the mind. This is covered in the film, of course, with limitations. It is not possible to make a production showing the true horrors of war, as no one could watch it without fainting or vomiting while observing the harsh reality of battle, and for that very reason, soldiers in major wars end up with psychological problems and depression, as they witness something that human beings are not prepared for, seeing their own cruelty.
No News on the Front Line
Something that at first seemed to me to be a negative point, was the title of the film itself, whose phrase does not seem very entertaining, to say it out loud, it does not seem that it could be an appropriate title for a film where you will see action in battle, it seems a passive and unremarkable title, normally we expect a title that makes the emotions jump and that catches the viewer, however, after watching the film you can easily deduce the reason for this title that in my opinion was unsavoury at first glance.
The film takes place in what history calls "the war of the trenches", a war characterised by those long labyrinths underground that soldiers dug to maintain a strategic position, now, in this situation where the two sides dig an infinity of trenches the combat is limited to a few hundred metres, that is to say, those fierce combats only aimed to gain a few metres, the lives of thousands of soldiers vanished only to jump to the next trench that was surely very close to the initial position.
In the film we will observe these clues so that the viewer knows that the film turns in circles from a scenography point of view, basically reaching a point where these endless battles take place in two or three places only, referring to that trench warfare in which trenches were conquered over and over again leaving a path of death all around.
At times we think that the battles take place in different sectors, but the film then gives us the surprise that everything happens very close, almost in the same place, which puts us in a situation where we can reflect on the human cost of simply gaining a few metres on the battlefield.
"All Quiet on the Western Front" is a reference to the fact that despite all the lives lost in the fierce battles, everything remains relatively the same.
Acting and Characters
The main character (Paul Bäumer) is played by the young Austrian Felix Kammerer, from my point of view he does quite well for the short film career that this actor has, it is one of those jobs that can significantly boost his career in the audiovisual industry, surely we will see him in other productions in the coming years. The young man plays a good role, an interesting evolution and until the end, the character does his own thing to keep us in front of the screen in expectation.
In spite of the fact that we are basically observing faces that are little known in the medium, we have an actor that we have already seen before, in fact, one of his most remembered characters is precisely in a war film, it is Daniel Brühl, who I particularly remember playing the soldier Fredrick Zoller in the film Inglourious Basterds, one of my favourite films of this genre. His performance is short, but precise, a very important character, even though he only has a few minutes on the screen with an adequate performance from my point of view.
I think there are very good supporting characters, they give a good essence to the film and get the message across well, making emotions blossom in many scenes throughout the film.
Cinematography and special effects
I am always attentive to the technical aspects of this kind of films, it seems to me that the work is carried out correctly, where the first sequence of scenes serves to capture the viewer's attention, already from the first scene we know that the film will present us with an impeccable work.
I like the darkness on the battlefield, the smoke surrounding that terrain full of death, the rain, the mud, all are correct historical aspects that we can almost feel them, at times we can feel the anguish of some who are waiting for the moment to defend their trench.
It has good special effects, not something very impressive nor is it an aspect, for which this film will be remembered, nevertheless, the use is correct and in the technical aspect it delivers us a quite complete work from my humble opinion.

I like this kind of films, especially when they deliver a reflective message about war, perhaps by producing many films of this kind, we can change our perspective on an armed conflict that many on the planet, unfortunately are living in their own flesh. Perhaps like these young Germans in the film, many think of the action and adrenaline of a battle, however, everything changes in the mind when they see the harsh reality in front of their eyes.
In particular I liked it, saying that I have a certain weakness for this type of film that can sometimes cloud some of my judgement, but overall, it seems to me a film that can be among the best of the year, at least within this genre that is so critically acclaimed.
Do I recommend it?
I think it's a good film in many ways and one that manages to hold your attention until the end, providing good entertainment for a general audience. I think it is a film to watch with some friends and discuss both the production and those tragic events in history, ideal for those who like the war genre, I would recommend it to many people, as entertainment from my point of view is guaranteed.

This movie brought us back the history of World War. Students can watch this one during their Social Studies Class. Upon reading this one, I remember my father likes to watch this kind of movie. The first film was made in 1930, this is an adaptation for 2022. At least that's what the data sheet says.

I thought this film was absolutely wonderful. I had read the book as was required by my school many years ago but had forgotten basically everything about it. They did a fantastic job portraying the horrors of war and this is one of the best films I have seen in a while.
