Beasts of No Nation

Beasts of No Nation

[English Version]

Something I like about the world of cinema is that sometimes it places us in situations that are somewhat uncomfortable from a moral or social point of view, but which at the same time are a cruel reflection of the reality of other human beings living in some other part of the world, although this film is not based on a real event, We know that in Africa there are similar situations or even situations that exceed in escalating proportions what this film tells us, a film to take into account and to put our feet on the ground of what we often ignore as a society in the face of the suffering of other human beings and especially of children.

Source

This is a film based on the novel of the same name, which describes the devastation of war in small villages in Africa, it is also a panorama where children are trained to kill and be part of the militias that greedily want to take over the resources of the disputed territories, a breath of harsh reality that immerses us through the eyes of an Agu, a child.

Synopsis:

Agu is a boy living in a dangerous area where a fierce civil war is raging, separated from his family, he is now trained by a battalion commander to become a fierce soldier who fights to the death for a side he never chose.

Film Analysis

I think many of us have seen at one time or another an African child carrying a rifle or a large automatic weapon that must be supported by his small body, it is an image that may not be seen very often on social media, but somehow we know that these "child soldiers" exist.

This kind of film reminds us that our little problems in a modern life of pettiness in the face of the possibility of a fierce civil war without morals, where families are murdered in cold blood and where the only hope of many children to see a new dawn is to learn to shoot or murder other human beings, is something quite hard to take on, but it is a problem that we often downplay, as it happens thousands of miles away from our homes. Therein lies a great importance of the film industry, it is not only commercial entertainment with special effects, but often becomes a moral mirror of our society, where we observe how far we are capable of going as a species when there is greed and hunger for power.

Source

Good Introduction

The film begins with an extensive introduction, showing us the world of Agu before the war, a boy with a family and with a lot of joy, this introduction emphasizes the family bond of the young man, knowing from the beginning that, at some point in the plot, their families will be taken away, this is a good resource that undoubtedly gives us a more accurate and emotional context to the film, it makes us feel at times the despair of Agu crying alone in the bush. It is an introduction that is necessary to contextualise and to give good emotions.

Acting

Idris Elba gives a very good performance as the commander, the leader of a battalion fighting in this bloody civil war, he is one of those charismatic characters that with words alone can convince his men to fight to the death on the battlefield, a great leadership and determination that marks a character for this kind of situation. It is undoubtedly a great performance and it should be noted that this actor is of both British and Sierra Leonean nationality, a country that has experienced firsthand the horrors of countless military conflicts between ruthless warlords, so it is to be expected that, for Idris, the personification of this commander has a special value to publicise what is happening in many parts of Africa.

Source

Although we can speak highly of Idris Elba in terms of acting, the one who surprises me in particular is the young Abraham Attah, playing Agu, the boy who is the protagonist of this story. It is a rather complex role, but this young Ghanaian plays it well in each scene and in his evolution within the plot, with impressive gestures in those moments of silence, as well as good dramatic turns throughout the film, an interpretative revelation on the part of this child that we will undoubtedly remember.

Source

Plot

The plot has several characteristics very well narrated within a solid and convincing structure, we observe an interesting evolution of the protagonist who is the central theme of the film, we concentrate on his psychology through the different circumstances that are presented. There are scenes of violent death and battle with a heroic edge, but we also observe the consequences of all these violent and dark acts in the head of a simple child.

One of the phrases that stands out the most in this film is when Agu himself says in the narration "I would like to do things as a child", referring to the life he has had to live and where there is no escape.

Source

The narrative is very good, the way in which the events unfold and some of the plot twists are subtle but effective, revealing the darkness that exists in people with a lust for power and how the war is also destroying the population in one way or another.

We will observe emotional scenes, where several viewers will have a tear running down their cheek, with the knowledge that someone, somewhere in Africa, is living what is comfortably being projected on our Netflix screen, the scenes are hard, but necessary to understand the emotions felt by Agu and his other companions, as well as that of the soldiers and even to know the intentions of the commander himself.

Rating:

7.9 ⭐️

Final opinion

It is a war drama that is necessary to see, they are situations where even reality can overcome fiction, the film has its limits in terms of showing the horrors of war, but these are shown with touches of violence and blood to adequately accompany the story. A well-developed narrative gives us an interesting and thought-provoking character development.

Do I recommend it?

Yes, it is a film to keep in mind, a breath of reality on a subject that we often ignore, but at the same time we are aware that it is real, it is a film that is made with high quality despite its budget does not compare to large commercial productions, in addition to giving us a direct message. I highly recommend it.

I stopped by your post after seeing the title which is familiar to me. I have to admit that I have not seen the movie yet but I've had a friend tell me so much about it after we saw a meme where Agu says "I saw terrible things". From what I hear, the movie is a masterpiece that deals with a harsh reality that many young people face today. I just saw the trailer and it looks like something very sad.

Your review of the movie is very good and has convinced me to finally check it out.

It is true that there are certain movies like this one that make us reflect on the real problems that exist in the world, the situations through which certain people are going through, but we are indifferent because we are far away from the situation. Films like these should be admired. An excellent recommendation

Alot of us from this part would be drawn to this movie especially given the title and the name "Agu" which means Lion...it would be the perfect story line to show a great message about certain activities going on here..A solid 7/10 is great
