A Hike and a Sunrise over a Sea of Fog

avatar

Actually, at the moment I don't feel like turning on my computer at home after work, but yesterday I went on a hike and I want to share a few of the photos I have taken during sunrise.

Hike . Sunrise . Sea of Fog
Dobratsch | Villach | Carinthia
Hike . Sunrise . Sea of Fog

Actually, I like the last minutes before sunrise at the end of the so called "Blue Hour" most, when the indirect sunlight paints amazing colors in the sky. If there had been high clouds the sky would have looked like burning.

Most times I turn right or left or even 180 degrees around right after the sun appears on the horizon.

The sea of fog that covers the valleys was still in quite darkness or in the shadow of the Dobratsch mountain, where I was standing on, and the higher hills are like islands in the flowing white mist. This is the view to the west - on the left side of the "islands" is the Gailtal valley and on the right side you can see the Drautal valley covered by fog.

Viewing south you can see the mighty Carnic Alps and in front there is a hill peaking out of the fog with some houses on top which belong to the village of Göriach down in the valley. The morning sun has lit the area so nicely that I had to take this photo. This place is right at the border to Italy.

In the back you might recognize another village on top of a mountain. The mountain is called Monte Lussari and it is a popular tourist desination and ski resort near Tarvisio in Italy.

❖ please click the image for fullsize view ❖

The path on the ridge leads down to the valley, but I haven't hiked there yet.

I wished I could say that I had the whole peak and sunrise for me alone, but while I took the first photos there have been more than 20 people behind me who have had the same idea as me ;)

I do not know what this pyramid like mountain is called, and I do know it is quite dark, but these two are my favorite images of that morning.

So, that was all for today - tomorrow starts another busy week and I do hope I will find a bit more time for the Hive than the past week :)

I got up at 3:30 and was on the peak at about 6:00 am ;)
I always try to hike as early in the morning as possible, and most times I am alone, but not this time, because a lot other people thought it would become a nice day, and it was weekend - I didn't think of that ;)
But I was still lucky, because when I hiked back down I met literally hundreds of people and there was no silence on the mountain anymore 😆

Thank you so much that you like the photos, dear Barbara, and apart from having to share the sunrise and the place with other people I have had a very nice morning up there 🤗

You can have these "wonders" at almost any time, all you have to do is to sweat a little bit while you hike up a mountain for one hour or a few more 😉

Thank you so much for your kind compliment, @cezary-io, I hope you and your family are well and you take care, my friend 🤗

It's not hard work, it's annoying work and quite a lot, but I'll manage it, don't worry ;)

Two things here Hannes,

One, I have also seen this over here when I worked on a Radio signal tower on the top of one of the mountain peaks. I could almost see Mozambique on tthe horizon and it was an ocean of clouds such as yours here.

Two. You have taken some fabulous shots here and with this hike you certainly struck gold.
Congratulations on the fabulous photos my friend!

Blessings!

I have made this hike quite often, my friend, but I have to admit that I have never had the luck to see so many clouds. They have been 360 degrees around and you could only see the mountain peaks. It was amazing to see and because you have seen such yourself you know what I mean :)

Thank you very much for your kind words and compliments, Zac 😊

Good morning Zac,

I think you understand my love for hiking - all sweating is forgotten when you reach the peak 😀

As you might have noticed I comment less and shorter at the moment. I just feel like it because so many things are going through my mind and it's hard to find the mood or time for the Hive, although I always feel better when I talk to friends like you 😊

I don't know if I'll be able to post this week, but I want to implement the badge linked to @combination.

Wish you a great day my friend 😊

Hi Hannes . I just commented a few minutes ago on your reply and just now saw these beauty photos. I’ve never seen thick fog like that. The closest would be when I was in a plane going through the clouds.

It would be hard to pick a favorite as these are all amazing nature landscapes.

I am sure you have seen such clouds before, my dear, but you have seen them from below ;)

Under the clouds it's quite dark and especially in the lake are where I live the fog and high clouds darken the sky till midday or sometimes even longer, but we are used of that and are even happier when the sun finally appears 🔆

I can see that your hike was upwards to get such magnificent photos. Was it a tough going given you went up a fair way?

Most of the way up you can drive a beautiful curvy mountain road (link is in the Information part at the end of my post). The rest is a 1.5 - 2 hours hike either on a gravel road or you are a bit faster on a narrow and steep path which goes more directly to the Peak, but when hiking in the darkness it's safer to use the road ;)

Thank you very much that you like the photos, @AngieMitchell, I have had a very good time up there and wish you a wonderful week 😊

I have never been so far south in Italy and didn't even know they have such high mountains, but Wikipedia has just proved me wrong ;) It's a nice area there and I can imagine that many roads are similar to our mountain roads.
Maybe I should sometimes change my destinations and not always go to Croatia on the other side of the Adriatic Sea 😉 ... I'll see when the borders are open again and you can travel without any problems again.

Far from the maddening crowd, ideal place to escape, hopefully no one else shares the same thought on the day and you obtain perfect solitude!

Yeah, that's the idea behind, but last Saturday a lot of people had the same idea. I didn't mind because I just ignored them 😃 LOL

Practically, you could say it's kind of evening after a nightshift, because you go to bed after work 😉
But don't worry, the days when I had a !BEER for breakfast after working through the night are long gone, not the nightshifts though 😁

!invest_vote

One does not mind sharing the space if everyone is there to enjoy the view, cannot stand those who have to be 'heard', constantly talking!

Nightshift work takes it toll on some, others love working without clutter of daylight staff hours. As for !BEER at breakfast I have witnessed runners having beers after early morning runs, not such a good idea to my mind, each to their own....

0

0.000

That's right, and people who hike on a mountain at 5 in the morning are mostly like-minded. The ones who want to be heard usually come a bit later 😂

A !BEER in the morning is nothing I would want to have again - the rest of the day is ruined, but if one needs it ;)

Maybe you'll miss the mountains, maybe not too much, at least for a while. I remember going to Lausanne quite regularly a decade or 1,5 ago visiting one of my customers. They recommended me to stay in a hotel (don't recall the name anymore) right at the Geneva lake. I always felt so good being there. Working during the day and then coming 'home' at such laidback village (or is it city?) and beautiful surroundings. My only experience with mountains and work.... Thinking of it, not my only experience with work and mountains, d*rn getting old... Vancouver was another one, and Cape town yet another one. That said, Lausanne was the most peaceful experience of combining work and beauty :)

Yes, living at a lake surrounded by mountains is amazing ... if I had to make a decision whether I want to live on such a place or on a beautiful tropical island I would choose the island, but only if there are mountains nearby 😉
