Joems in Mosaic: Piecing Together a Life of Curiosity, Purpose, and Everyday Wonder
Hi there, Hive! I’m Joemagel, and welcome to JoemsInMosaic. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to introduce myself, but then I realized the best introduction isn’t a list of accomplishments or a timeline of my life, it’s the story behind the name JoemsInMosaic.
To me, life is a mosaic. A tapestry of every joy and heartbreak, every lesson learned, every place I’ve been, every hobby I’ve explored, every person I’ve met, every failure, and every victory has become a piece of who I am. On their own, they may seem ordinary, but together they create a colorful, imperfect, and beautifully authentic picture of my life. So instead of simply telling you who I am, I’d love to share the pieces that have shaped me and the mosaic I’m still creating.

The First Piece
I was born in the late ’90s in the province of Pampanga. My parents were young, deeply in love, and creative enough to combine their names to create mine “Joemagel”. “JOE and L” came from my father, Joel, while “MAGE” was inspired by my mother, Gemma. In a way, my name has always been a reminder that I was born out of love.
Life wasn’t easy for us. My parents had just graduated from university when they welcomed me into the world. My mom put her career on hold to raise me, while my dad worked several jobs to provide for our family.
Although we didn’t have much, I never felt deprived. Our home was filled with love, laughter, and the quiet contentment that comes from being surrounded by people who care deeply for one another. I learned early on to appreciate what I had instead of longing for what I didn’t, and that has remained one of the greatest lessons of my life.
Looking back, I realize that my parents laid the very first pieces of my mosaic. Their sacrifices, unconditional love, and unwavering support became the foundation upon which every other piece of my life would be built.

**The Piece That Sparked My Curiosity **
One of the earliest and most meaningful pieces of my mosaic is my curiosity. As a child, I was quiet and timid. I found more joy in spending time alone than playing outside with my neighbors and classmates. Most days, you would find me in my room reading books or watching Sineskwela and MathTinik, two educational Filipino television shows that fueled my imagination.
We didn’t have much, so the books I read were mostly borrowed from the library. When I ran out of stories to read, I often found myself bored. Looking back, I think boredom became the spark that ignited my curiosity.
I began looking at the world through curious eyes. Why can ants carry leaves much bigger than themselves? Why does the paint on our walls peel? The more questions I asked, the more I wanted to understand how the world worked.
That curiosity grew into a lifelong love of learning, and even today, that flame continues to burn just as brightly. It was this curiosity that led me to become a Science teacher. I earned my Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Biological Sciences in 2017 and passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers later that same year. I eventually completed my master’s degree in Teaching Science and have had the privilege of teaching learners of different ages and backgrounds, including children with special needs.
Nothing brings me greater joy than seeing a student’s eyes light up when they discover something new. If I can spark even one question that inspires them to keep learning, then I’ve done my job well.
Beyond the classroom, another passion has quietly grown alongside teaching, writing. I write about the things that inspire me, the moments that challenge me, the places I explore, and the lessons I learn along the way. Writing allows me to slow down, reflect, and preserve the stories that shape my life.
To me, teaching and writing have always gone hand in hand. One helps me understand the world through knowledge and discovery; the other helps me understand it through stories and reflection. Together, they have become two of the most treasured pieces of my life’s mosaic.

The Piece That Mends the Broken Pieces
Three times.
That’s how many times my heart was broken before I met the person who would spend the rest of his life protecting it. I won’t dwell on those past relationships. I’d rather tell you about the man who changed my understanding of love.
We first met at university. At the time, we were nothing more than strangers passing by each other. There were no butterflies, no dramatic first meeting, and definitely no love at first sight. Not even a crush.
After graduation, I thought our paths had crossed for the last time. Life, however, had other plans. We both ended up teaching at the same school. I taught Science, and he taught Filipino. Friendship came first. We spent time talking, laughing, and discovering how much we had in common.
Somewhere along the way, friendship quietly became love. There was no grand confession or movie-worthy moment. Falling in love with him felt effortless, like breathing. It happened so naturally that before I knew it, I couldn’t imagine a future without him. It was like slowly drifting off to sleep after a long day, gentle, peaceful, and certain.
It’s been eight years since that fateful day in April, and I still remember it as if it were yesterday.
Then came March 12, 2020. Just one day before the world stood still because of the pandemic, we stood before God and promised to spend our lives together. While everything around us was about to change, I found the one thing that would remain constant. Since then, my heart has been safe.
My husband is my constant, the piece of my mosaic that walks beside me through every winding road, every challenge, and every season of life. He is the one who celebrates my victories, steadies me through my struggles, and reminds me that home is not a place but a person. If my parents laid the foundation of my mosaic, then my husband is the piece that reminds me I never have to walk through life alone.

The Piece That Changed My Heart Forever
When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately booked an appointment with my doctor. My baby was only a few weeks old, but even before the faint lines on the pregnancy test confirmed it, I already knew in my heart. I couldn’t explain it, but I could feel that something inside me had changed.
During my checkup, my doctor asked if I wanted to hear my baby’s heartbeat. I said yes without hesitation. She gently reminded me that it might still be too early to hear anything, but I wanted to try anyway.
During the ultrasound, she smiled and told me that my baby was only the size of a poppy seed, about a quarter of an inch long. I laughed at the thought. Then, in the quiet of the room, I heard it. The faintest flutter. It wasn’t a full heartbeat yet, just a tiny flutter.
My world stood still.
The noise around me disappeared, and all I could hear was that tiny rhythm coming from the little poppy seed growing inside me.
I used to think of the universe as something vast and impossible to comprehend. But in that moment, my entire universe shrank to a tiny poppy seed with a faint flutter.
From that day on, my mosaic was never the same. Suddenly, every other piece seemed smaller. That little quarter-inch life growing inside me became the largest and most precious piece of my mosaic. It still is.

The Pieces Painted in Greens and Blues
I believe nature is the greatest artist. If you were to look at my mosaic, you’d find many of its pieces painted in different shades of green and blue. That’s because I find an overwhelming sense of peace and freedom whenever I’m surrounded by nature. I love mountain climbing, camping, and seeking new adventures.
When I was single, I spent many weekends hiking mountains. These days, with a family of my own, I’ve stepped away from that hobby for a while. But I never stepped away from nature. Instead, I’ve found new ways to experience it with the people I love most.
Every month, I take my son camping, and together we explore different campsites around our area. My husband loves the ocean, so whenever the weather allows, we also spend time by the sea.
These moments remind us to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and care for the world we’ve been given. Our love for nature doesn’t end when the trip is over. We try to make it part of our everyday lives by visiting farms, introducing our son to the work of farmers, and letting him spend time with farm animals.
We want him to grow up knowing that nature isn’t just something we visit. It’s something we belong to. Whenever I’m outdoors, I’m reminded of one of my favorite lines from Desiderata: “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.” Those words have always grounded me. They remind me that, just like every piece in a mosaic, each of us has a place and a purpose.
