Water In Stores

"Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink." true words spoken by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1798.

After the floods in mid-April purchasing water became a reality, no water flow through taps one quickly realizes the cost of life without this commodity.

Cause makes no difference whether via disaster, climate change, ecosystem upheaval, one commodity we all have to have is water!

Shopping at local stores first and most important commodity is to ensure sufficient drinking water is always available in the home, repairing infrastructure many places are still without water, often disconnection pushes muddied water through meaning all tap water must be boiled before consumption.

Blue, Red and Brown boxes filled with 5 litre bottles of water, cellphone photography.

Marketing Wow the variety of plastic bottled water took me by surprise, never one to rely on buying only using tap water filtered for drinking in the home this might become the next big thing storing and selling water in glass!

Prices went up quickly on supply and demand, tanks used to refill those awful plastic bottles had sticker systems put onto reusable containers, first the orange to reflect a refill not newly purchased bottle making it a little cheaper, then a blue on top of the orange to show re-use for second round. After that I stopped documenting.

Stickers on bottles to define usage, photo at home.

Water tankers and tanks are slowly getting through to more rural regions how the people have suffered in some areas.

Jojo tanks arriving at clinics for installation, these range between 20 litre in size to 20k litres, prices will also go up with current situation, average price 5k litre Jojo is R5 500, installation costs separate, planned use is purely grey water usage.

After Covid with many living on R350 (US$22) per month grant money, consider warehouse price 4 x 5 liter on 'promotion' at R140 (US$8.82), that is only 20 liters and half a months money almost gone. The fancy food stores will sell 5 liter bottle at R24, where you will be limited to the number you take home.

Never take water for granted, we have a constitutional right to water, not so much when it is polluted with plastic, human waste, sewerage, living through droughts and floods shopping for water becomes utmost importance when the taps no longer feed the home.

You might be surprised that I've known those words from Coleridge's poem since my mid teens, only because they were part of an Iron Maiden song though :)

Musicians should be singing word of warning, more pollution into waterways is killing veins of the earth.

Water is big business nowadays and one feels for all of those without a grant that cannot afford it.

Water only became big business when so called 'spring water' in bottles started, served in glass!

Now littered plastic bottles make their way to rivers and seas.

So true Lady Joan and I see that many baby ocean turtles are being brought into the rehab place every day to treat them for the plastic that they eat.
They should BAN PLASTIC.

A really big problem that we have in this country. If so much money wasn't stolen we could have offered employment to a new anti-littering force.

If 10c/kg was offered for plastic, 20c/kg cans collection returns, 50c/kg on glass, recovery would be astronomical.

Retail shops should only use recycled or paper packets, over packaging using polystyrene/plastics penalized where wax wrap paper or similar could be introduced back into sales on meat.

Ha! A brilliant idea, but wait until the syndicates get a hold on it, then it will result in even more suffering as they will encourage people to litter.

Yes, agreed and something urgent has to take place Comfort foods serve two purposes, they fatten and kill people and their wrappings destroy nature. So sad.

Consumer is paying extra for packaging, with free advertising printed on everything!

When buying bread I demand paper packets, if you don't ask they don't do!

Life of packets re-usable dusted out, folded and placed into a drawer, cut to size, turned inside out to fit into glass bowl to place under cheese standing in the fridge, cheese lasts longer with brown paper removing excess moisture. Paper packaging used under fruit and veg in the fridge for same reason. After good use shred and place into composting heap.

We the consumer must start placing pressure on stores.

Tidal wave of filth in rivers/seas has to stop...

Wow! We must make you the president of the re-cycling commission methinks.
You are so correct and it is indeed up to all of us to make our voices heard at the shops and in public.
Littering is madness and the sooner that it is stopped the better. If it's not too late already.

So many bottles of water have arrived from other provinces people are asking what to do with them, I suggested seeking out NGO who would be able to refill and circulate down to Eastern Cape where drought still rages on!

People need to realize we all have to work together to build, get away from all the political/tribal thinking we are South African's living in the same land.

Electricity and internet are a massive problem in our area with no power, water cannot be pumped to reservoir. My sister-in-law cannot get out of her garden still waiting for repairs to be done, currently no electricity since Saturday night, so recharging equipment, doing shopping for a couple of families who literally live 1 kilometer away.... We have been more fortunate than most, helping each other is the least we can do, who knows next time it could be our home.

Oh yes, we have also sent tons of water down to KZN. Maybe Gift of the Givers can help with the distribution?

As long as they are determined to get to the money pots and not focused on the people tat they are supposed to serve, there will never be unity Lady Joan.
They rather spread divisive messages in order to win votes.

You are a real stand up kind of person and I would love to have you in Papillon. When the chips are down we get going and that's just who we are. There is always a plan to be made, especially in haggard conditions and it sounds like you are doing your part. Proud of you.

Have some !BEER and take care!

Division between people is rife due to politicians having a bad attitude, fighting for power instead of working together. If everyone did just a little around their immediate community the country would thrive.

Days of men sitting under big tree holding Indaba while woman work the lands is history, everyone needs to become involved.

Yep! You hit the nail on its head, as it is all about personal enrichment. Sadly that will never happen Lady Joan, as too much division have been sown. Now the seeds of division are starting to grow and the future looks like a war zone.

Equal opportunities for all is also a continued struggle as in many instances the old mindset still rules.

Unbelievable profiteering. When things are as dire as they are right now in KZN, water should be free. Hope you are okay? ❤️💕😊🤔

Hibberdene further down the coast close to Port Shepstone there are towns now without water for 30 days, no sign of tankers or assistance from municipality.

When places close to Durban still battle, including Prince Mshiyeni Hospital it is tenfold worse in remote regions.

It's a mess and people are driving like idiots, getting anywhere would be quicker by horseback.

What is shocking is NGO/NPO's are managing to distribute, yet we hear little to nothing in of municipalities, army or powers that be. Our local Councillor is assisting surrounding areas not receiving water tankers.

When the most basic necessities aren't available or are for an exorbitant price, I call foul. When our water was contaminated and needed to shut off, water was provided or at the very least, water filling stations. Truly, it is the least that can be done. Water is expensive, and a large water buffalo was brought in for showers and grey water needs.

If this is something that is government made (and I may be wrong here) they need to take care of their people with - at the vry least, water stations.

I absolutely abhor plastic bottles and will always do the reusuable glass. Many States put a return on their cans/plastic bottles so they will return. You pay the deposit and get it back when you return it. Most people bring it back or put it in a recycle bin if too lazy. The wanderers of the streets will go through and clip them. Better than tossing them in the woods or beach.

Thanks so very much, Joan @joanstewart! MarketFriday adores you!

I have run so far behind in the comments of #MarketFriday that I am having to do the abbreviated one so that I can finish them in an (almost) timely manner. For this, I apologize, but, just know that it doesn't change the way I viewed your post. I have read them all at least once, some twice and as usual, I am pleased to say that I always get the best. I just love how people have embraced the community and have really been making an effort to visit the other posts, learning about each other and giving pieces of advice, their opinions, and most of all, showing support to each other. That is what community is all about. I want to thank you for doing that.
Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday! I am honored.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Doing everything on African time is normal here, more often than not out of our control, no problem Denise 😅

State Capture part of our massive countrywide problem, influx from the North has brought more disharmony, promises made not kept now anger creeps in.

During these floods we experiencing gross neglect to infrastructure over last 30 years, no money in the coffers that has been stolen, now powers that be will sell out mining to all and sundry!

Basic needs as in our constitution will never be met when theft is rampant, politicians are fighting within their own parties, greed for money no one is serving the people!

Wanderers on our streets seek food, normally elderly woman, youth have turned to drugs doing anything to obtain money to feed the beast.

!LUV thanks for comment, a sobering thought how far down the hole the last 30 years has taken us.
