explaining bitcoin to crypto babies

(Edited)

I told a parent last week that I accept bitcoin as payment for piano lessons. He laughed. He’s heard of the word “bitcoin” and that’s about it. It’s not easy to explain in two minutes. After my 7 year old student gave a big sigh to signal us grown ups to save the bitcoin talk for another day, I told her dad it’s a good time to research and that bitcoin was 10 years old.

Making sense of candlesticks and analysts’ reports may turn off a lot of people before they understand how blockchain technology and cryptocurrency can change the world for better. To not understand that this is a disruptive technology created to improve the common man’s lot in life is a great loss. Only one documentary has hit all the boxes educating in a digestible manner, demonstrating that bitcoin and blockchain helps create wealth, lift the poor and inspire global possibilities of a more peaceful world, and that is Magic Money: The Bitcoin Revolution.

This is a well polished and organized documentary that won’t explode crypto baby brains with information overload. I believe it was filmed partly at Anarchapulco, interviewing people that are well respected in the crypto sphere such as The Dollar Vigilante, Jeff Berwick. @dollarvigilante and Roger Ver aka Bitcoin Jesus @rogerkver.

Jeff Berwick explains his ideals eloquently. He advocates volunteerism and has given me a fresh perspective on society. Refreshingly positive despite seeing the dark sides of life behind and before us. The financial system as we know it is doomed to collapse. Berwick has foresight and vision. We can plan to ride out the storm.

If your crypto baby is a geek, they will probably appreciate a Ted Talk that further nerds them out. I recommend this TWO minute explanation on Blockchain and The Middleman.

After your crypto baby has digested all that, they may enjoy a snarky take on sharing the bitcoin story. Warning: cute cartoon is not G-rated. Your churchy grandparents might not like it though it’s very entertaining.

Bottom line, if we are in the know of a technology that can transform our world for better, it helps to not bore our loved ones with overwhelming resources. They already think we are crazy buying into a system where EVERYONE accepts that the creator is UNKNOWN. How do you get your friends and family to line up for that? Here’s to baby steps.
