Quizás a todo aquél que guste de hacer fotografías le sucede algo: Un día salimos a hacer unas fotos de algo en específico y "algo conspira" para que terminemos haciendo otra cosa muy distinta.

Maybe something happens to everyone who likes to take photographs: One day we go out to take some pictures of something specific and "something conspires" so that we end up doing something very different.

En este caso en particular, salí armado con mi cámara con la intención de caminar hacia el pie de la montaña y ver si podía encontrar algunas mariposas para fotografiar. Para eso me llevé mi lente 18-200mm el cual consideré suficiente para fotografiar a tales insectos sin necesidad de acercarme demasiado y así evitar asustarlos.

In this particular case, I went out armed with my camera with the intention of walking to the foot of the mountain and see if I could find some butterflies to photograph. For that I took my 18-200mm lens which I considered sufficient to photograph such insects without the need to get too close and thus avoid scaring them away.

Para llegar a mi destino debía salir del pueblo por el Oeste, apenas a unas pocas calles de mi casa y después de tomar sendero de tierra y bajar un poco hasta el cause del pequeño río (el cual rara vez tiene agua ahora debido a los cambios del clima en la región) desde donde se comienza a subir en dirección a las colinas.

To get to my destination I had to leave the village to the West, just a few streets from my house and then take a dirt path and go down a bit to the source of the small river (which rarely has water now due to the changes of the climate in the region) from where it starts to climb up into the hills.

Pero una vez llegando al cause, quede absorto mirando el pequeño bosque de ribera que se extiende a lado y lado del rió. Parecía fresco y con un toque luminoso muy especial, pues la niebla apenas acababa de irse y el follaje conservaba cierta humedad.

But once I reached the riverbed, I was absorbed by the small riverside forest that spreads out on both sides of the river. It seemed fresh and with a very special luminous touch, as the fog had just left and the foliage kept a certain humidity.

Además, eran algo más de las 8AM y todo estaba en silencio y casi no habían insectos (algo sumamente molesto en horas de mayor calor en este lugar)... Así que decidí adentrarme un poco en el bosque y respirar ese "aire de tranquilidad y humedad" que había allí en ese momento.

Besides, it was a little after 8AM and everything was quiet and there were almost no insects (something extremely annoying in the hottest hours of the day in this place)... So I decided to go a bit into the forest and breathe in that "air of tranquillity and humidity" that was there at that time.

Pasaron pocos minutos y comencé a mirar el entorno desde un punto de vista más fotográfico, se me ocurrió que la luz, el follaje y la atmósfera en sí, constituían un conjunto algo melancólico y visualmente complejo... La palabra "sepia" se me vino de inmediato a la mente y comencé a hacer disparos imaginando aquellas escenas captadas en ese formato agradable que es el sepia.

A few minutes went by and I started to look at the environment from a more photographic point of view, it occurred to me that the light, the foliage and the atmosphere itself, constituted a somewhat melancholic and visually complex whole... The word "sepia" immediately came to my mind and I began to take shots imagining those views captured in that pleasing sepia format.

Para procesar fotos en sepia hay que pensar un poco distinto que cuando se hacen para procesarlas en blanco y negro (en mi humilde opinión, cuando menos)... Y es que el sepia requiere una "foto base" mas subexpuesta y con menor contraste nativo... Así que la combinación que decidí usar fue: ISO 800 (debido a la tenue luz del bosque), aperturas de F/7.1 y F/8 (Lo suficiente para mantener todo enfocado con distancias focales iguales o menores a 50mm y evitar imágenes movidas, el modo de captura fue semiautomático apertura (A) y logré mantener velocidades de obturación siempre por encima de 1/200s a pesar de estar metido bajo el dosel del bosque.

To process sepia photos you have to think a bit differently than when you process them in black and white (in my humble opinion, at least)... And sepia requires a more underexposed "base photo" with less native contrast... So the combination I decided to use was: ISO 800 (due to the dim light of the forest), apertures of F/7.1 and F/8 (enough to keep everything in focus with focal lengths equal or less than 50mm and avoid blurred images, the capture mode was semi-automatic aperture (A) and I managed to keep shutter speeds always above 1/200s despite being under the forest canopy.

Tengo que decir que disfruté una barbaridad disparando fotos allí y que se me escaparon las horas sin poder continuar con mi intención de fotografiar mariposas en las colinas, así que ya a eso de las 11Am retorné al pueblo con mi cámara cargada de fotos del bosque entramado y el alma repleta de ese tipo de calma que solo la soledad en la naturaleza puede regalarnos.

I have to say that I enjoyed shooting there and that the hours slipped away without being able to continue with my intention of photographing butterflies in the hills, so at about 11Am I returned to the village with my camera loaded with photos of the canopy forest and my soul full of that kind of calm that only solitude in nature can give us.

En esta ocasión, por tratarse de una locación de luminosidad complicada y en donde por nada del mundo me atrevería a usar un flash, entonces el formato RAW me permite un margen de maniobra enorme al momento de procesar las imagines y tener que explotar el rango dinámico de mi vieja Nikon D7000 al máximo.}

^{All the images were captured in RAW format as I usually do with all the photographs I take. On this occasion, being a location of complicated luminosity and where I wouldn't dare to use a flash for anything in the world, then the RAW format allows me a huge margin of manoeuvre when processing the images and having to exploit the dynamic range of my old Nikon D7000 to the maximum.}

^{With Adobe Camera RAW I manage highlights, contrasts, brightness, sharpening and temperatures and try to leave the image "As I saw it", even allowing myself to slightly overexpose the greens so that I can manage them later when I convert them to greys.}

^{Con la herramienta de gestión por colores convierto toda la foto a "escala de Grises" y procuro llevarla a lo que a mi juicio sería una "Foto Blanco y negro bastante pobre de contraste y excedida en sombras", pero esto lo hago porque ya conozco las herramientas que usaré posteriormente y se que requieren este tipo de imagen para poder trabajar bien sobre ella sin estropearla.}

^{With the colour management tool I convert the whole photo to "greyscale" and I try to take it to what in my opinion would be a "black and white photo quite poor in contrast and with too many shadows", but I do this because I already know the tools that I will use later and I know that they require this type of image to be able to work well on it without spoiling it.}

^{El JPG resultante se trabaja brevemente en Photoshop, en donde suelo realizar algunos ajustes rápidos de niveles en negros y grises y algún retoque en los blancos bajando aún más su luminosidad.}

^{The resulting JPG is worked on briefly in Photoshop, where I usually make some quick adjustments to the levels in blacks and greys and some retouching of the whites by lowering their luminosity even further.}

^{Posteriormente, ese JPG trabajado en Photoshop, es abierto con PhotoScape y ese simpático y minimalista software tiene una cosa maravillosa y rápida: "Un botoncito que pasa la fotos a Sepia"... El resultado es una imagen en un color marrón rojizo ligeramente exagerado, pero hay que decir que suele hacer un ajuste automático de contraste al mismo tiempo, además, suelo "pulsarlo dos veces" y la segunda vez suele generar una imagen más agradable y con una profundidad mayor.}

^{Subsequently, that JPG worked in Photoshop, is opened with PhotoScape and that funny and minimalist software has a wonderful and fast thing: "A little button that turns the photos to Sepia".... The result is an image in a slightly exaggerated reddish brown color, but it must be said that it usually makes an automatic contrast adjustment at the same time, moreover, I usually "press it twice" and the second time usually generates a more pleasant image and with a greater depth.}

Después de eso utilizo las pocas herramientas que tiene PhotoScape para altera la luminosidad de la imagen, agregar viñetas y puntos de luminosidad para mover el foco de atención de la imagen usualmente puedo estar haciendo esto entre 15 y 45 minutos en una foto, lo hago valiéndome de las brochas de luminosidad, profundidad y sombras... Es casi como "pintar" y es muy relajante...}

^{Obviously, the image is already in sepia, but it is necessary to convert it into something that meets my expectations, besides I don't like sepia too reddish, so I usually decrease the saturation between 30 and 40% and obtain a brown that tends to be more dark brown... After that I use the few tools PhotoScape has to alter the brightness of the image, add vignettes and brightness points to move the focus of the image I can usually spend 15 to 45 minutes doing this on a photo, I do it using the luminosity, depth and shadow brushes... It's almost like "painting" and it's very relaxing...}
