I am excited🤗 to share with you my recent harvest of crops. Sometime three (3) months ago in September, I engaged in the cultivation of cereals which was a mixed cropping of beans and soya beans. Beans botanical name is Phaseolus Vulgaris while the Soya Beans is Glycine max An acre of land was cultivated as it was leased out at no cost generously donated and hence, reducing the capital cost. The planting of seeds was done approximately the same time with interval of five (5) days and at a spacing of 65cm. The planting was done during the rainy season and as such, little or no need for irrigation farming. It should be noted that Beans requires rain mainly for germination and sprouting and within the first thirty (30) days of planting. Subsequently, it will thrive with or without rainfall.

About four (4) weeks after cultivation when the seeds were germinated and well sprouted, weeding was done and afterwards, the application of NPK fertilizer to support the crops (it should be noted that soybeans requires significant amount of Nitrogen to thrive well).

The picture above is about four (4) weeks after application of fertilizer with view to harvesting. The rains were not significantly much however, averagely okay to support the crops. Occasional checks on the land was done to follow up on the crops as to ascertain what needed to be done on the land.
The harvest time approached evidenced by firm and easy to snap bean seeds through the manual reaping and the Soya Beans was harvested first. The Beans had to undergo series of pretreatment to minimize the effect of weavils on the yield and were vine dried afterwards for storage.
The yield was not as much as expected however, this is my first attempt at cultivating beans and soyal beans.

After harvest, the cereals were bagged and just like previous times of cultivating other crops, I took aside some reasonable quantity for home consumption while some were gifted to family and friends. The yield was not significant to cover up for the capital but, it was a good attempt, future precautions taken and like a saying goes, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step".

I have engaged in dry season cultivation of rice in the past using irrigation and also, the year before now was the cultivation of corn and Guniea corn also as a mixed cropping.
I am yet to commence commercial cultivation however from recent cultivations, lessons have been learnt to improve future steading engagement.

It is good to try out new projects especially at quantities that would not cost us significantly if yield is not as expected.

Hopefully next year, I will conclude on which crops to cultivate.
Thank you for reading through and I wish you a harvest of gifts this Christmas season🥰
