Getting Out of My Comfort Zone | Practice, Practice, Practice!

Hello! ❤️

Hi, aliens! Hope you have a good weekend. It is almost the weekday where I am from. Ugh, Mondays are always a struggle 🤣. Since I have nothing to do, I decided to practice my art skill. I am not really good at shading and proportions, and so I am just relying on YouTube tutorials.

This year, I promise that I will get out of my comfort zone. I want to learn different art styles. As of the moment, I still cannot decide what should I go for. Sometimes I am feeling an art style, and then I will switch to a different one. That is why mastering one for me is difficult because I am indecisive lol 🤣. Right now, I am just playing around with different styles.

Sketch

First thing is to conceptualize the art. I was thinking of a short-haired girl wearing a tank top with a jacket. I put layered hair in front to make the hair look interesting. I also put a heart-shaped earring for her accessory. For the background, I am thinking of neon lights.

It takes me a lot of time to make a concept, but thanks to images and references online, it is easier for me to find inspiration.

For sketching, I always use a flat brush.

Flat colors, shading

I used neutral colors for this art. See, this is the struggle I have. I always use neutrals instead of experimenting colors. porbably because I think of the shading part that is why I stick to the easier ones. Next time, I will be more creative in color.

I decided for the hair to be two-tone, black for the front and then ash gray for the rest. The tank top is dark brown and the jacket is an off-purple color.

Okay, so shading is the part that I am really struggling. Perhaps I have to study anatomy to locate the muscles haha! It is really hard to not have an art background. Hmm, lucky those who went to art school.

At this point, it is just references and imagination of the source of light. Yeah, I have a long way to go.

Now, I try to put the light source. I realized that the position of the light source is very important because it will dictate the shadows and highlight of the art. I put the light source on the hair shoulder, and noticeably on the eye. I like it when there is a glow in the eyes. The character is much more "alive" in my opinion.

I dropped the heart earring because I want to emphasize the hair. I put some blue tints on the tips of the hair. Instead of earrings, I just put two necklaces. I just downloaded the brushes from Clip Studio Asset.

Final Art

For finishing touches, I added the details on the jacket. I was thinking of the corduroy texture but just thought of saving that idea for next time. On the sketch, I said that I will be putting neon lights, but yet again my indecisiveness strikes 🤣 I prefer a soft light of purple. Noticed that I added a string of light on the hair, hehe.

A little shading and correction~ and tadaaa! Finished art!

I had fun with this little exercise~ I will post more of my practice journey here on Hive 🥰

Looking good, Jiji! Keep working with your practice, and you'll see the results you want. There are so many "freesources" on the internet it's hard not to find the info you need to improve in the areas you want.

Since you're a work-a-holic you'll improve in no time 😁

Good to see you trying out new styles. I have to say the perspective you choose here is one of the toughest to draw but it seems like you had no issue with it since the rough sketch of it looked great as well. I mess up big time on other perspectives lolz.

If you have time look into colour theory, complimentary colours and lighting. Like I said before your lineart is ready, you only need to look into colour theory a bit more that's it hehe. Have fun and keep improving :)

I am very careful on tagging myself as an artist becuase someone said that i am not. 🤣

Realism is not really what I am aiming for. Closest would be semi-realism.😊

Thanks for the pizza and luv!
