When the unexpected surprises me
Llevo aproximadamente una cinco semanas padeciendo de una molestia importante en mi mano derecha, básicamente el dolor se manifiesta en todo el lado del pulgar, desde la punta del dedo pulgar hasta la muñeca, inclusive, se inflama la parte superior de la muñeca.
Como mi traumatólogo especialista en mano de confianza se contagió con COVID, y no ubicaba a otro médico que me generará confianza, la mano es super delicada y debe ser tratada por un experto, decidí tomar antinflamatorios e inmovilizar mi mano y también hacía terapia colocándome hielo.
I have been suffering from significant discomfort in my right hand for about five weeks, basically the pain manifests itself on the whole side of the thumb, from the tip of the thumb to the wrist, and even the upper part of the wrist is swollen.
As my trusted hand specialist traumatologist was infected with COVID, and I could not find another doctor that I could trust, the hand is very delicate and must be treated by an expert, I decided to take anti-inflammatory drugs and immobilize my hand and I also did some therapy with ice.
Intento de reposo / Attempt to rest
Si bien es cierto que debía hacer reposo evitando el uso de mi mano derecha, lo mismo no ocurría, ya que soy muy débil a ayudar, en especial a mi madre, entonces hacía reposo interrumpido, si me cuidaba, pero no del todo, lo cual no es lo adecuado. Mi mamá no estaba al tanto de que tan fuerte era la molestia, no le quería preocupar.
Así que luego que ayudaba en parte a mi mamá, me colocaba hielo en la mano derecha, seguidamente me colocaba crema mentolada y finalmente me colocaba la venda.
Aunque había notado una mejoría discreta, consideraba que es requerido una evaluación medica a la brevedad.
Although it is true that I had to rest avoiding the use of my right hand, the same did not happen, since I am very weak to help, especially my mother, so I rested interrupted, if I took care of myself, but not completely, which is not the right thing to do. My mother was not aware of how strong the discomfort was, I did not want to worry her.
So after I partly helped my mom, I put ice on my right hand, then I put menthol cream on it and finally I put the bandage on.
Although I had noticed a discreet improvement, I considered that a medical evaluation was required as soon as possible.
Visita al médico / Visit to the doctor
Luego de ganarle una batalla al COVID, mi amigo médico se recupera totalmente y retoma sus actividades, así que el jueves pasado fui a su consulta, me alegró mucho verle, tenemos una amistad de 26 años, él es prácticamente un hermano. Es excelente profesional de salud.
Luego de conversar un rato, inició la consulta, examinó mi mano, estresó mi mano con diversos movimientos para conocer la dimensión de lo que ocurre a mi mano.
Continuó examinando mi mano, y me dijo, tienes: "Tenosinovitis estenosante del primer compartimiento extensor de la muñeca. Llamada enfermedad de Quervain".
Ante ese diagnóstico pegunto por qué ocurre, el doctor me dice por sobreuso de la articulación, a través de actividades como: uso excesivo del celular, muchas horas en el computador, exprimir coleto y/o ropa, alzar peso, entre otras.
Para este diagnóstico el doctor indicó: Antinflamatorio vía oral por 10 días, una inyección de esteroide e inmovilizar la mano con muñequera ortopédica con soporte en pulgar.
After winning a battle against COVID, my doctor friend is fully recovered and resuming his activities, so last Thursday I went to his office, I was very happy to see him, we have a friendship of 26 years, he is practically a brother. He is an excellent health professional.
After talking for a while, he started the consultation, he examined my hand, he stressed my hand with different movements to know the dimension of what is happening to my hand.
He continued examining my hand, and told me, you have: "Stenosing tenosynovitis of the first extensor compartment of the wrist. Called Quervain's disease".
Faced with this diagnosis I ask why it happens, the doctor tells me by overuse of the joint, through activities such as: excessive use of cell phone, many hours on the computer, squeezing coleto and/or clothes, lifting weights, among others.
For this diagnosis the doctor indicated: oral anti-inflammatory for 10 days, a steroid injection and immobilization of the hand with an orthopedic wrist brace with thumb support.
Inicio de reposo médico / Start of medical rest
El doctor me dijo que después de dos semanas de tratamiento y reposo regrese a la consulta con radiografías, si todo va de acuerdo a lo esperado voy a rehabilitación, de lo contrario debe operar ☹️.
Cuando el doctor me habló de operación, me dije que debo ser rigurosa y estricta con el reposo y el tratamiento.
Salí de la consulta a buscar la muñequera indicada, visité 62 farmacias y no conseguí la muñequera. Le comuniqué al doctor que no conseguí la muñequera, a lo cual me respondió, debemos inmovilizar con un yeso el pulgar derecho, y eso fue lo que el doctor hizo.
The doctor told me that after two weeks of treatment and rest return to the consultation with X-rays, if everything goes according to expectations I go to rehabilitation, otherwise he must operate ☹️.
When the doctor told me about the operation, I told myself that I must be rigorous and strict with the rest and treatment.
I left the consultation to look for the indicated wrist brace, visited 62 pharmacies and did not get the wrist brace. I told the doctor that I did not get the wrist brace, to which he replied, we must immobilize the right thumb with a cast, and that is what the doctor did.
Cuando lo inesperado me sorprende / When the unexpected surprises me
Es curioso, el doctor no me quería inmovilizar con yeso, y extrañamente luego que me dijo que de no mejorar debía operar, prefería el yeso. Al final, me pareció mágico no conseguir la muñequera...Con el yeso no había posibilidad de quitar y poner, con la muñequera si había esa posibilidad, y al tener muñequera la posibilidad de no respetar el reposo existía, lo cual no resultaba beneficioso.
Entonces bajo esta situación inesperada en la que me encuentro, me sorprendo de preferir el yeso, y es que quiero seguir adelante con mis proyectos de arte, con mi trabajo laboral, con mis ganas de ayudar a todos... Es que mi corazón sabe lo que me beneficia, tengo el yeso, no es nada cómodo, mas sé el beneficio que estoy logrando.
Te invito a evaluar cada una de tus actividades y observar si estás usando mucho tus manos, evalúa las tareas repetitivas con tus manos, toma reposos, realiza ejercicios que fortalezcan a tus manos, cuídalas!!!
It is curious, the doctor did not want to immobilize me with a cast, and strangely after he told me that if I did not improve I had to operate, he preferred the cast. In the end, it seemed magical to me not to get the wrist brace... With the cast there was no possibility of removing and putting it on, with the wrist brace there was that possibility, and having a wrist brace the possibility of not respecting the rest existed, which was not beneficial.
So under this unexpected situation in which I find myself, I am surprised to prefer the cast, and I want to go ahead with my art projects, with my work, with my desire to help everyone .... It is that my heart knows what benefits me, I have the cast, it is not comfortable at all, but I know the benefit that I am achieving.
I invite you to evaluate each of your activities and observe if you are using your hands a lot, evaluate the repetitive tasks with your hands, take rest, do exercises that strengthen your hands, take care of them!
