Hello, my cordial greetings to the entire Hive gaming community, today I come with another analysis of a video game saga and my approach to it. In this case, we will talk about the saga of Tropico, which started in 2001 with its first installment, and that although it has changed hands along the years, its essence has been maintained throughout their presentations.

Hola, mis cordiales saludos a toda la comunidad de Hive gaming, hoy vengo con otro análisis de una saga de vídeo juegos y mi aproximación a la misma, en este caso hablaremos de la saga de Trópico, iniciada en 2001 con su primera entrega y que si bien ha cambiado de manos su esencia se ha mantenido a lo largo de sus presentaciones.

It is not my intention to focus on the mechanics nor much less on how accurate are the realities that this game saga reflects(albeit with a touch of Dark humor), nor much less how it works as a simulator of history, For that there is already this wonderful study which I invite you to read if you are interested in the subject.

No es mi intención enfocarme en las mecánicas ni mucho menos sobre qué tan acertadas son las realidades que esta saga de juego refleja, si bien con un toque de humor negro, ni mucho menos el cómo funciona como un simulador de la historia, para ello ya existe este maravilloso estudio el cual les invito a leer si les interesa el tema.

I come with a personal approach to the very dubious term of democracy in this game saga and the ideological implantation that it brings, especially when we talk about phenomena like populism and media/political manipulation.

Vengo con una aproximación personal al termino muy dudoso de democracia en esta saga de juegos y de la implantación ideológica que este trae la misma, especialmente cuando hablamos de fenómenos como el populismo y la manipulación mediática/política.

In the case of this saga, it shows a common reality in underdeveloped countries, the shaky and almost non-existent democracy, backed by authoritarian governments. No matter what political orientation they have when they take power, all decisions they make only suit the ringleaders and themself.

En el caso de esta saga, se muestra una realidad común en los países sub-desarrollados, una democracia temblorosa y casi inexistente, respaldada por gobiernos autoritarios que sin importar que orientación política les respalde tomaran poderes y decisiones de manera que solo convenga a los cabecillas del mismo.

My favorite in the saga is Tropico 3, this presentation while still raw and unimproved, but without overdoing the details as happened in later versions.

Mi favorito en la saga es Trópico 3, esta presentación si bien esta aun cruda y sin mejoras, pero sin exagerar en los detalles como sucedió en posteriores presentaciones.

The capacity presented to Mr/Mrs. President if power, and the ways to solve problems in Tropico, are so variable that the least of all evils ironically is the execution of a civilian or political opponent. When you see that amount of power in your hands, is where you feel the real problem in a democracy based on the phenomenon of populism.

La capacidad presentada al Sr/Sra. Presidente de poder y las maneras de resolver los problemas en trópico, son tan variables que el menor de todos los males irónicamente es la ejecución de un civil o contrincante político, cuando ves esa cantidad de poder en tus manos es donde sientes el verdadero problema en la democracia basada en el fenómeno del populismo.

On many occasions we are presented with situations that show us that we are three votes away from losing an election. The common player has dozens of solutions to win, from legal to illegal, but behind that facade of a democracy you can see how fragile it is, with a good speech you can turn the people and win a lost election. The game is undoubtedly sarcastic about the influence of a well-made speech on the self.

En muchas ocasiones se nos presentan situaciones que nos muestran que estamos a tres votos de perder una elección, el jugador común tiene decenas de soluciones para lograr ganar, desde legales a ilegales, pero tras esa fachada de una democracia se puede ver lo débil y frágil que es la misma, con un buen discurso puedes voltear al pueblo y lograr ganar una elección perdida. El juego sin duda es sarcástico respecto a la influencia de un discurso bien realizado en el mismo

The ideological implantation represented, by the immigrants, their influence and the player's policies regarding them. And how Caribbean countries are forced to import talent to build their modern nation which is nothing more than a process of neo-colonization of western culture or better known as americanization or the embrace of the communist URSS to our little tropical cities, in the game.

La implantación ideológica representada, por los inmigrantes, su influencia y las políticas del jugador respecto a los mismos y de cómo los países caribeños se ven obligados a importar talento para poder construir su nación moderna que no es más que un proceso de neo-colonización de cultura occidental o más conocido como americanización o el abrazo de la URSS comunista a nuestro pequeño trópico, en el juego.

In those instants is where the concept of democracy in the game gets dirty in the hands of the player and is attacked in all its structure by populism, alien political ideologies, parties, and the manipulation of public opinion together with strong abuse of power common in Caribbean authoritarian governments.

En esos instantes es donde el concepto de democracia en el juego se ensucia en manos del jugador y es atacado en toda su estructura por el populismo, ideologías políticas ajenas, partidos y la manipulación de la opinión publica junto a un fuerte abuso del poder común en los gobiernos autoritarios caribeños.

This game faithfully represents authoritarianism from the perspective of the filmmaker and takes it further by being a sarcastic reflection of our Latin American and Caribbean history, however it is entertaining to place yourself in their shoes and be, the one who abuses power, and as I write this, my political opponent in the game will have an accident in a few minutes.

Este juego representa fielmente el autoritarismo desde la perspectiva del realizador y lo lleva más lejos al ser un reflejo sarcástico de nuestra historia latinoamericana y caribeña, sin embargo es entretenido colocarse en sus zapatos y ser uno el que abusa del poder, y mientras escribo esto, mi contrincante político en el juego tendrá un accidente en unos minutos.

The concept of democracy is vulnerable in most of the world, not because someone is chosen by The People, they plan to fulfill any of the promises they made to get to power, while you are always the all-seeing eye in the game, in real life democracy spreads that power over even more links and all are given to corruption.

El concepto de la democracia es vulnerable en la mayoría del mundo, no porque alguien sea escogido por El pueblo, realmente planea cumplir alguna de las promesas que hizo para llegar al poder, mientras siempre se es el ojo que todo lo ve en el juego, en la vida real la democracia reparte ese poder en aun mas eslabones y todos son dados a la corrupción.
