Few comedy films would get censored if they were ever made in another decade, but for me, Blazing Saddles (1974) could never be one of those, because of its sheer exposure to American History and the way "ignorant farmers" as the movie call them are portrayed a message is sent, and we get the pure message from the movie: This was never right and Mel Brooks is here to point at it and make a joke out of it. This particular film made history in more than one way, for handling its dark humor to the highest peak for a film and set the bar high in film history on how to make a comedy about mocking racism.


So with this bar set, we are out to say Why should I watch it now in 2022? And my answer is: If you want to laugh so hard that you roll on the cinema floor, you need to see this movie, if you want to have a good time while Mel Brooks points his finger at Hollywood, you must see this movie, and if you want to have a great cowboy buddies movie where you can feel a real friendship from the cast, You have to watch Blazing Saddles!

From the start of the film we see a real strong portrait of how things were in the west of America in the Pioneer years, minorities were practical slaves, while white men did things that make you look at them as if they were crazy, it was bizarre how the first joke of the movie lands but when it hits you know you are out to get a real good ride.

From that point onward this film is ludicrous, and don't get me wrong, you will have a blast in every area of the film, but one thing that I can notice is the constant stream of critics about sexism, racism, and all negative things in American society in history and present day.

Mel Brooks tons of anachronism are what make this film feel so current and funny in the present day because he constantly broke the wall of history while portraying those issues and making fun of them, from the hangman that was medieval for "whatever reason" to the train wreck ending section of the film, this movie is a non-stop train of surprises as a whole.

The flow of jokes about the ignorant and petulant side of our history that we try to forget, rewrite, or present it didn't happen because it "wasn't us", while at the same time not being overly moralistic about it and just playing dumb with it, is what makes this film so great because it never tries to become a moral lesson, it is what it is, and it embraces it with madness and jokes.

While I'm Latin American, and White I feel deeply related to the film because my mom is Indian, one of my older brothers also is, and jokes on the subject were constant in my family and my dad, why? Because my grandparents on the father's side were racist as Ducks, and we understood it, they were European. My dad taught us to just mock them and their remarks, without being disrespectful of course, and eventually, by the time my oldest brother was a child, they stopped altogether those behaviors, at least against my mom and my oldest brother.

Slavery was a reality in the wild west, yes, people got "paid" but the pay was food and spare change, making racism and sexism real present at the time, this film leads you to take a break free from those harsh realities by showing that the town folks stopped being racism at the end of the film.

And if you dare to look deeper, the town folks did change, when they were saved by the sheriff, first from Mongo, then from the Hedley Lamar villain, as soon as they were asked to give lands to the Chinese and the African Americans, they decided to drop racism all together and show respect for the sheriff.

With that element, the element of Change, which in itself is something we rarely see in comedy films to the point I have to name it, we are shown an ending to racism, and the best of them all a proper social interaction, one can hate what you do not know, but once you know the culture, social differences and connect with it, is a lot harder to be racism, that message in itself Is Mel Brooks biggest joke on the film.

The Jokes in this film break the fourth wall, breaks common sense, goes beyond boundaries with almost anything that could have been mocked, from the film industry as a whole in the end fight, to the way sets are also a form of entertainment, and proceed onwards to be one of the best comedy films of all time.

All that while breaking the wall to the reality of the USA in 1974, a time that had the biggest African American power struggle against systematic racism, in the hands of the Black Power movement still in its best years, fighting to change the world, the country, and the American culture as a whole. All this by the hand of a Jewish director, that knew firsthand the how and why's of racism as a veteran of WW2 and a member of its people, so he decided to make a joke on it to us, the viewers.

That is the best part, you can feel this whole film as a joke made at our expense, without being moralistic, ethical, or anything else but hardcore humor, it makes you laugh at something that is serious and that society has to fight as a whole, so you feel deeply disconnected of it, of the bigotry and racism, and it that way you can finally look deeper upon yourself and ask: Why was this ever "ok"? And for that I thank Mel Brooks, Cleavon Little (Bart), Gene Wilder (Jim), and all the cast of Blazing Saddles because they still gift laughter and reflection when watching this masterpiece, almost 50 years over, we are all still like Mongo, only pawn's in the game of life.

Esta película en particular hizo historia en más de un sentido, por el manejo de su humor negro llevandolo a la cima más alta para una película y el listón muy alto en la historia del cine sobre cómo hacer una comedia sobre la burla del racismo.

Así que con este listón puesto, voy a decir ¿Por qué debería verla ahora en 2022? Y mi respuesta es: Si quieres reírte tanto que te revuelques en el suelo del cine, tienes que ver esta película, si quieres pasar un buen rato mientras Mel Brooks señala con su dedo a Hollywood, debes ver esta película, y si quieres una gran película de dos colegas vaqueros en la que se siente una verdadera amistad por parte del reparto, ¡Tienes que ver Blazing Saddles!

Desde el inicio de la película vemos un verdadero y fuerte retrato de cómo eran las cosas en el oeste de América en los años de los Pioneros, las minorías eran practicamente esclavas, mientras que los hombres blancos hacían cosas que te hacen mirar como si estuvieran locos, fue raro el como golpea el primer chiste de la película pero cuando pega sabes que te vas a llevar un verdadero buen paseo.

A partir de ahí esta película es ridícula, y no me malinterpreten, se lo pasarán en grande en todos los ámbitos de la película, pero algo que puedo notar es el constante flujo de críticas sobre el sexismo, el racismo y todo lo negativo de la sociedad americana en la historia y en la actualidad.

Las toneladas de anacronismos de Mel Brooks son los que hacen que esta película se sienta tan actual y divertida en el presente, porque constantemente rompió el muro de la historia mientras retrataba esos temas y se burlaba de ellos, desde el verdugo que era medieval por "ninguna razón" hasta la sección final del desastre de la película, esta película es una gran sorpresa indetenible en su conjunto.

El flujo de chistes sobre el lado ignorante y petulante de nuestra historia que tratamos de olvidar, reescribir, o no presentar para decir que no sucedió porque "no fuimos nosotros", y al mismo tiempo no ser excesivamente moralista al respecto y simplemente reirse con ello, es lo que hace que esta película sea tan grande porque nunca trata de convertirse en una lección moral, es lo que es, va y lo abraza con locura y chistes.

Si bien soy latinoamericano, y blanco me siento profundamente relacionada con la película porque mi mamá es Indigena, uno de mis hermanos mayores también lo es, y los chistes sobre el tema eran constantes en el lado paterno de mi familia ¿Por qué? Porque mis abuelos por parte de padre eran racistas como locos, y lo entendíamos, eran europeos. Mi papá nos enseñó a solo burlarnos de ellos y sus comentarios, sin ser irrespetuosos por supuesto, y eventualmente, para cuando mi hermano mayor era un niño, dejaron en conjunto esos comportamientos, al menos contra mi mamá y mi hermano mayor.

La esclavitud era una realidad en el salvaje oeste, sí, a la gente le "pagaban" pero la paga era comida y cambio de bolsillo, lo que hacía que el racismo y el sexismo estuvieran realmente presentes en la época, esta película te lleva a liberarte de esas duras realidades mostrando que la gente del pueblo dejó de ser racista al final de la película.

Y si te atreves a mirar más a fondo, los habitantes del pueblo sí cambiaron, cuando fueron salvados por el sheriff, primero de Mongo, luego del villano Hedley Lamar, en cuanto se les pidió que dieran tierras a los chinos y a los afroamericanos, decidieron dejar el racismo por completo y mostrar respeto por el sheriff.

Con ese elemento, el elemento del Cambio, que en sí es algo que rara vez vemos en las películas de comedia hasta el punto de que tengo que nombrarlo, se nos muestra un final del racismo, y lo mejor de ellos una adecuada interacción social, uno puede odiar lo que no conoce, pero una vez que conoces la cultura, las diferencias sociales y conectas con ellas, es mucho más difícil ser racista, ese mensaje en sí mismo es la mayor broma de Mel Brooks en la película.

Los chistes de esta película rompen la cuarta pared, rompen el sentido común, van más allá de los límites con casi todo lo que se podría haber burlado, desde la industria del cine en su conjunto en la lucha final, a la forma en que los sets son también una forma de entretenimiento, y procede a ser una de las mejores películas de comedia de todos los tiempos.

Todo ello rompiendo el muro a la realidad de los EEUU en 1974, una época que tuvo la mayor lucha de poder afroamericana contra el racismo sistemático, de la mano del movimiento Black Power aún en sus mejores años, luchando por cambiar el mundo, el país, y la cultura americana en su conjunto. Todo esto de la mano de un director judío, que conocía de primera mano el cómo y el porqué del racismo como veterano de la 2ª Guerra Mundial y miembro de su pueblo, por lo que decidió hacernos una broma al respecto a los espectadores.

Eso es lo mejor, puedes sentir toda esta película como una broma hecha a nuestra costa, sin ser moralista, ni ética, ni nada más que humor duro, te hace reír de algo que es serio y que la sociedad tiene que combatir en su conjunto, por lo que te sientes profundamente desconectado de ello, de la intolerancia y el racismo, y de esa manera puedes finalmente mirar más profundamente sobre ti mismo y preguntarte: ¿Por qué esto estuvo alguna vez "bien"? Y por eso agradezco a Mel Brooks, a Cleavon Little (Bart), a Gene Wilder (Jim), y a todo el elenco de Blazing Saddles porque todavía regalan risas y reflexión al ver esta obra maestra, casi 50 años después, todos seguimos siendo como Mongo, sólo peones en el juego de la vida.
