November 16, 2021--Chorale prelude on Christum wir sollen loben schoen by Georg Bohm

I went with an earlier Chorale prelude today, Christum wir sollen loben schoen by Georg Bohm. It is a surprising piece, indicating the direction the chorale prelude would go--the tune is played in slower pitches and somewhat elaborated over a contrapuntal three part texture. The strange part is the ending. I have only played one other piece by Bohm. Both pieces end on a surprising chord--not the tonic. The piece is in D minorish, but ends with a big E major chord. I am curious about this--is the meant as a dominant to the dominant of the chorale itself allowing the congregation to move to the dominant of the chorale when they began to sing it? Or is there another reason? Something worth investigating....
