Some time ago I told you how much I like catastrophe movies, as psychopathic as it may seem, the way the end of the world or natural catastrophes are portrayed in movies are mostly dramatic and very fictitious. However, the case of the movie I want to share with you today is special, as it takes a very stable suspense and drama movie course, of course, some memorable scenes that go beyond good special effects, I present you my opinion about the movie Knowing.

An astrophysics professor (Nicolas Cage, as John) finds thanks to his son (Chandler Canterbury, as Caleb) with a sheet that was in a time capsule between 1959 and 2009, this sheet contains a series of numbers that match dates of important past and future catastrophic events, which tries to stop and discover what will be the last event with fear that has to do with his family.
At first, the film leads us to a suspenseful plot, with what happened to Lucinda Embry at the time she wrote the sheet that would go to the time capsule, which can be treated as the first question of the film, what is a mysterious girl doing writing a series of digits on a sheet of paper for a school assignment? We would remain with the doubt unanswered for now, because for this moment of reflection we are now transported to the environment of John Koestler, who lives with his son and we are given to understand at first that there are only the two of them in their nuclear family because his wife died a year ago in a fire. John tries to manage his relationship with his son as best he can after the incident, even though John himself has changed a lot after the incident, being now a widowed father and a nihilist. This is implied in a few minutes of the film, seeing the three environments in which John lives, which would be his work, friendships and family.
Although everything changes the day Caleb is handed a mysterious sheet of paper with a bunch of seemingly meaningless numbers, I just start thinking about how much the word "meaning" matters in this movie, John being an atheist sees the universe as meaningless, coincidences after coincidences that resulted in life on the planet. Even so, one night when he accidentally places his alcoholic drink right on top of the leaf -which leaves a circle enclosing some numbers- he sees a pattern of numbers indicating a now famous date, nothing more and nothing less than September 11, 2001 (91120012996, to be exact), not only the date was written there, but also the number of victims who lost their lives that day. John looks for meaning, in all the numbers that were written on the sheet, some that perfectly matched dates and affected, other digits simply did not match this format, is when John discovers that this sheet predicts all the catastrophic events that would occur between 1959 and 2009, even with future dates that he decides to wait and confirm to happen.
In the wake of this discovery, strange things happen around John and Caleb, strange noises in Caleb's hearing aid begin to appear, strangers in suits approaching John's house, but nothing strangers John more than the first event coming true. After a night of waiting for that event, our protagonist finds himself in a traffic jam on the road on the way to Caleb's school in which just at that moment, at that precise moment he realizes that the coordinates of the place where he was coincides with the numbers that were left out, he is anguished by what might happen at that moment and inevitably, one of the most shocking scenes of the film occurs without a doubt. John's desperation is remarkable, it finally happened and the tension finally takes effect in the dark atmosphere of the moment, a plane crash of which there would still be very few survivors, many wounded and of course, the victims perfectly indicated on the sheet. I refer to this scene as the most shocking scene of the film because of how surprising it was at the time, the special effects were very well adapted and the performance of Nicolas Cage is very much the protagonist, he even approaches the crash site amid flames and explosions all to save the passengers of that plane, of which 81 would die that day.
Now everything would make sense, the numbers that did not coincide with dates or victims would be the coordinates of the event. John can not accept what is happening at that moment, the sheet makes sense with what happens in real life, sense that overwhelms John for his ideas until then and he has no choice but to seek more sense in this situation, for which he seeks and meets Diana, the daughter of Lucinda Embry, which could give information of the experiences of his mother because of the strange things she did and lived. It turns out that Lucinda was a strange woman, of whom we have no information other than the strange things she did, heard things and said incoherent things... Or rather things that other people could not understand. As the subway accident happens and while Caleb stays at his aunt's house, he keeps hearing things that went from being noises to being whispers that only he could hear. The strangers in suits keep invading John's house and even going so far as to show up in Caleb's room, by this point we could deduce that these strangers were aliens due to the abilities they possessed and their strange way of acting, but we have yet to meet an equally important character. Lucinda's granddaughter, Diana's daughter, shares the same situations as Caleb such as hearing voices, it is important to know this, as there are three characters in this movie that act the same way and have the same experiences with these situations.
Right now I know that under my words some of what I have said seems to make no sense at all and that is that the movie is the same, the plot opens great unknowns throughout the movie that seem to be very distant from each other, until finally the pieces start to come together. Those last digits on the sheet that looked like an upside down "33" were "EE", initials of the phrase "Everyone Else", apparently everyone would be victims of this last event, the behavior of our protagonists is frustrating, they have an answer with one last doubt What is going to happen that day? The film would finally reach the climax, even though the whole movie has been a mountain range. Everyone with their own judgment would say that it is the end of the world, something that at this point would be impossible to stop... But the hope of being able to do something floods John after having discovered in his workplace that it is a strong action of the sun that would finish with all the organisms of the planet. It is therefore that begins one of the most tense moments of the film, the search for the coordinates of the final event, I can not describe what I felt at this moment and it was such a desperate moment, just put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist, you are hours away from the end of everything and must seek an answer to what could be salvation. Although here comes in yet another topic, the faith and hope that John has in the background, realize that throughout the movie the coordinates shown on the sheet were where the events would happen, but John knew that if he went to those locations he could do something about it, he would think he could stop that accidents and even though this last event is something beyond what he can actually alter, he decides to go with full assurance that he can do something, that something could make sense if he really made the effort to go there.
The last scene leaves a lot to think about, I don't want to describe it precisely because the essence of the whole movie is to watch it and analyze it on your own, but once again, this is just my opinion. There are two things that one could imagine once the movie is over, those whisperers (which, well, were the strangers in suits) were angels or aliens, I am more of the first option due to the context in which the whole movie is sustained, John's lost faith and his distant belief with his father, then the search for meaning to the things of the leaf and finally John's redemption, reunited with his family after having put all his hopes in Caleb. But what does the leaf have to do with John's beliefs? Well, it is about the sense that the leaf takes on when the events begin to happen just as they were written there, taking into account that John from the beginning of the film has the thought that the human is only the coincidence of a coincidence, this leaf would change everything for him.
This movie is one of the most attractive in the genre of catastrophes and all that, it has dyes of suspense movie and the result is what you see on screen, and as you know I am very satisfied with what I saw on screen. I highly recommend this movie for lovers of the genre, many will have already seen it but I know that there is one or another who has not and that is why I make the recommendation. Hace ya bastante tiempo les había contado lo mucho que me gustan las películas de catástrofe, por muy psicópata que parezca, la manera que se retrata el fin del mundo o las catástrofes naturales en el cine son en mayoría de casos dramáticas y muy ficticias. Sin embargo, el caso de la película que quiero compartirles hoy es especial, ya que toma un rumbo de película de suspenso y drama bastante estable, por supuesto, unas escenas memorables que van más allá de unos buenos efectos especiales, les presento así mi opinión acerca de la película Presagio.

Un profesor de astrofísica (Nicolas Cage, como John) se encuentra gracias a su hijo (Chandler Canterbury, como Caleb) con una hoja que estuvo en una capsula del tiempo entre 1959 y 2009, dicha hoja contiene una serie de números que coinciden con fechas de importantes sucesos catastróficos pasados y futuros, los cuales intenta detener y descubrir cuál será el último evento con temor que tenga que ver con su familia.
En un principio, el filme nos encarrila a una trama en un principio de suspenso, con lo acontecido con Lucinda Embry al momento que escribió la hoja que iría a la capsula del tiempo, el cual se puede tratar como la primera incógnita de la película ¿Qué hace una niña misteriosa escribiendo una serie de dígitos en una hoja para una tarea de la escuela? Nos quedaríamos con la duda sin responder por ahora, pues para este momento de reflexión nos transportamos ahora al entorno de John Koestler, quien vive junto a su hijo y se nos da a entender en un primer instante que están solo ellos dos en su núcleo familiar debido a que su esposa falleció un año atrás en un incendio. John intenta manejar la relación con su hijo lo mejor posible luego del incidente, a pesar de que el mismo John haya cambiado mucho luego de lo acontecido, siendo ahora un padre viudo y un nihilista. Esto se da a entender en unos cuantos minutos de película, viendo los tres entornos en los que vive John que serían su trabajo, amistades y núcleo familiar.
Aunque todo cambia el día que a Caleb le entregan una misteriosa hoja con un montón de números aparentemente sin sentido alguno, justo me pongo a pensar en lo mucho que importa la palabra “sentido” en esta película, John al ser ateo ve al universo como algo sin sentido, coincidencias tras coincidencias que dieron resultado a la vida en el planeta. Aun así, una noche en la cual por accidente coloca su bebida alcohólica justo encima de la hoja –que deja un circulo que encierra a unos números– ve un patrón de números que indicaba una fecha ya famosa, nada más y nada menos que el 11 de septiembre de 2001 (91120012996, para ser exactos), no solo la fecha estaba escrita allí, también el número de víctimas que perdieron la vida ese día. John busca sentido, en todos los números que estaban escritos en la hoja, algunos que coincidían perfectamente con fechas y afectados, otros dígitos simplemente no coincidían con este formato, es cuando John descubre así que esa hoja predice todos los sucesos catastróficos que ocurrirían entre 1959 y 2009, incluso con fechas futuras que él decide esperar y confirmar que sucediesen.
A raíz de este descubrimiento, cosas extrañas suceden en el entorno de John y Caleb, ruidos extraños en el aparato del oído de Caleb empiezan a aparecer, extraños con traje acercándose a la casa de John, pero nada extraña más a John que el primer suceso que se hace realidad. Luego de una noche de espera por ese suceso, nuestro protagonista se ve en un embotellamiento en la carretera de camino a la escuela de Caleb en el cual justo en ese momento, en ese preciso momento se da cuenta que las coordenadas del lugar en el que él estaba coinciden con los números que quedaban por fuera, esta angustiado por lo que pueda pasar en ese momento e inevitablemente, ocurre una de las escenas más impactantes de la película sin duda alguna. El desespero de John es notable, finalmente ocurrió y la tensión finalmente hace efecto en el ambiente oscuro del momento, un accidente de avión del cual quedarían aún muy pocos sobrevivientes, muchos heridos y por supuesto, las victimas que indicaba perfectamente la dichosa hoja. Me refiero a esta escena como la escena más impactante de la película debido a lo sorpresiva que fue al momento, los efectos especiales fueron muy bien adaptados y la actuación de Nicolas Cage es muy del protagonista, incluso se acerca al lugar del accidente entre llamas y explosiones todo sea por salvar a los pasajeros de ese avión, de los cuales 81 fallecerían ese día.
Ahora todo cobraría sentido, los números que no coincidían con fechas ni victimas serían las coordenadas del evento. John no lograr aceptar lo que está pasando en ese momento, la hoja tiene sentido con lo que pasa en la vida real, sentido que abruma a John por sus ideas hasta ese entonces y no le queda de otra que buscar más sentido en esta situación, por el cual busca y conoce a Diana, la hija de Lucinda Embry, la cual podría dar información de las vivencias de su madre debido a las cosas extrañas que hacía y vivía. Resulta ser que Lucinda era una mujer extraña, de la cual no tenemos más información que no sea las cosas raras que hacía, oía cosas y decía incoherencias… O más bien cosas que otras personas no podían entender. A lo largo que va sucediendo el accidente de los metros y mientras Caleb se queda en casa de su tía, el sigue escuchando cosas que pasaron de ser ruidos a ser directamente susurros que solo el podía oír. Los extraños de traje no dejan de invadir la casa de John e incluso a llegar a aparecerse en la habitación de Caleb, para este punto podíamos deducir que estos extraños eran alienígenas debido a las habilidades que poseían y su extraña manera de actuar, pero aún no hemos conocido a un personaje igual de importante. La nieta de Lucinda, hija de Diana, comparte las mismas situaciones que Caleb como escuchar voces, es importante saber esto, ya que van tres personajes de esta película que actúan de la misma manera y tienen las mismas experiencias con estas situaciones.
Ahora mismo sé que bajo mis palabras algunas cosas de lo que he dicho parece no tener ningún sentido y es que la película es igual, la trama abre grandes incógnitas a lo largo de la película que parecen estar muy distantes entre si, hasta que finalmente las piezas se empiezan a unir. Esos últimos dígitos de la hoja que parecían un “33” al revés eran “EE”, iniciales de la frase “Everyone Else” (todos los demas), aparentemente todos serian víctimas de este último evento, el comportamiento de nuestros protagonistas es frustrante, tienen una respuesta con una última duda ¿Qué es lo que va a pasar ese día? El filme finalmente alcanzaría el momento cumbre, a pesar de que toda la película haya sido toda una cordillera. Todo el mundo con juicio propio diría que se trata del fin del mundo, algo que a este punto sería imposible de detener… Pero la esperanza de poder hacer algo inunda a John luego de haber descubierto en su lugar de trabajo que se trata de una fuerte acción del sol lo que acabaría con todos los organismos del planeta. Es por ende que empieza uno de los momentos más tensos de la película, la búsqueda de las coordenadas del evento final, no puedo describir lo que sentí en este momento y era un momento tan desesperante, solo ponte en los zapatos del protagonista, estas a horas del final de todo y debes buscar una respuesta a lo que podría ser la salvación. Aunque aquí entra otro tópico más, la fe y esperanza que tiene John en el fondo, date cuenta que en toda la película las coordenadas mostradas en la hoja eran donde sucederían los eventos, pero John sabía que si iba a esas ubicaciones podía hacer algo respecto a eso, el pensaría que podía detener eso accidentes y a pesar de que este último evento sea algo que va más allá de lo que puede realmente alterar, el decide ir con toda seguridad de que puede hacer algo, de que algo podría cobrar sentido si realmente se esforzaba por ir allí.
La última escena deja mucho que pensar, no la quiero describir precisamente porque la esencia de la película entera es verla y analizarla por cuenta propia, pero una vez más, esta es solo mi opinión. Hay dos cosas que uno podría imaginar una vez finalizada la película, eso susurradores (que pues, eran los extraños con trajes) eran ángeles o alienígenas, yo soy más de la primera opción debido al contexto en el que se sostiene toda la película, la fe perdida de John y su distante creencia con su padre, luego la búsqueda de sentido a las cosas de la hoja y finalmente la redención de John, reunido con su familia luego de haber puesto todas sus esperanzas en Caleb. Pero ahora bien ¿Qué tiene que ver la hoja con las creencias de John? Pues se trata del sentido que cobra la hoja cuando empiezan a suceder los eventos justo como aparecían escritos allí, teniendo en cuenta que John desde un principio de la película tiene el pensamiento de que el humano solo es la coincidencia de una coincidencia, esta hoja cambiaria todo para él.
Esta película es una de las mas atractivas del género de catástrofes y todo eso, tiene tintes de película de suspenso y el resultado es lo que se ve en pantalla, y como ya sabrán estoy muy satisfecho con lo que vi en pantalla. Recomiendo mucho esta película para los amantes del género, muchos ya la habrán visto pero se que hay uno que otro que no y es por eso que hago la recomendación. I haven't had the chance to see this one. Nicolas Cage releases many movies every year, he is one of the actors who says yes to all projects hahaha some are not very good. I want to see the one he released recently, where he plays a vampire, the previous one I saw of this actor is one where he plays himself, it's good. I'll look for this one to put on my to watch list, you gave me an idea to make a mega review of all Cage's movies.
Is Nicolas Cage really this active lately? I haven't seen one of his new movies, but I did see a clip of that vampire movie you say. He's a not so versatile actor in his acting, but there are times when he shines. Thanks for commenting!

Nunca pensé tener la oportunidad de ver este film por acá, me encanta esta película y más por el contexto de las dudas que van surgiendo en la trama. ¿Por ejemplo: qué sucederá? Todo es tan ambiguo, tan impredecible, pero asimilable también. Aunque muy duro... El final es algo que te deja con la boca amarga. Es que en realidad no te lo esperabas, bueno, yo no me lo esperaba así. Me gusta el argumento, es una de las pocas películas que poseen algo muy fuerte dentro de ella y te deja con ganas de ver más.
Justo esa es la parte especial de esta película, no tienes ni idea de lo que pasará en el final por el rumbo que lleva la película pero una vez vista la película, cuando la vuelves a ver hay cosas que tienen su sentido con respecto al final. Gracias por pasar por aquí y compartir tu opinión!
