You do love to get our hearts racing, @bruno-kema! The story may be a bit hard to believe, however the phenomenon you describe is actually documented and it even has a name: hysterical strength. It is believed that in extreme circumstances we can develop very sudden, short-term Herculean strength due to adrenaline. You can read about it on the Hysterical Strength wikipedia page.
Writing believable and authentic stories is the ongoing challenge of the writer. And it is even more of a challenge when the real-life things we write about are "stranger than fiction!"
