Another anime that recently finished its season, and which generated a lot of buzz when it premiered, is Sentenced to be a Hero. I reviewed the first episode at the time because it's an hour long, which I thought was incredible, and I said it had great potential because the animation, or at least what little I'd seen of it, was very good. I think I was right; we're looking at one of the best anime of the year. Dark fantasy is always a genre that offers a lot of possibilities, as the plot twists can be endless. This is an unusual story because, among the usual fare, I'd never come across this particular one before, and I think that's why I liked it so much.

Otro anime que llegó a su fin de temporada y que cuando se estrenó tenía muchas expectativas por parte de la gente es Sentenced to be a Hero. En su momento le hice una reseña a su primer capítulo porque es uno que dura 1 hora cosa que me pareció increíble y dije que prometía porque la animación o lo que poco que se había visto de el era muy bueno. Creo que no me equivoqué, estamos ante uno de los mejores anime del año y es que la fantasía oscura siempre es un género que da para mucho ya que las aristas de la trama pueden ser infinitas. Estamos ante una historia inusual porque dentro de lo que siempre se puede ver esta en particular nunca me la había conseguido, creo que por eso me gustó tanto.

What's it about? - Well, it's a story where being a hero doesn't mean what everyone thinks. Here, being one comes with a punishment: being considered the worst of society and humanity. The way to become a hero is to be condemned for a crime you've committed, and the punishment is that you can never die. If you do die, you're revived and continue fighting. It doesn't sound so bad, but there's a twist: every time you're revived, a part of you dies. Your memories are erased, and the essence of your soul is also lost, to the point that you might end up as a wandering being, completely empty inside. Xylo Forbartz is a hero, unjustly sentenced (this is one of the plot's threads), and along with his goddess Teoritta because there are goddesses who help certain people—he must fight whenever he's called upon.

De qué trata? - pues es una historia en donde ser héroes no significa lo que todos pensamos, acá el ser uno de ellos supone un castigo, ser considerado lo peor de la sociedad y humanidad. La forma de hacerse un héroe es que te condenen por algún crimen que hayas cometido y el castigo es que no puedes morir nunca, en caso de que fallezcas te vuelven a revivir y sigues luchando. No suena tan mal pero es que hay un giro, cada que vez que revives una parte de ti muere, tus recuerdos se van borrando y la esencia de tu alma también se va perdiendo al punto de que puede que termines como un ser errante totalmente vacío por dentro. Xylo Forbartz es un héroe, sentenciado injustamente, (es parte de una de las aristas de la trama) y junto a su diosa Teoritta, porque hay diosas que ayudan a ciertas personas, él deberá pelear cada vez que se le sea requerido.

The threat here is a Demon King who summons creatures called Fairies that descend upon the cities in waves, sowing chaos. As the anime progresses, we realize that everything is more complex than it initially appears. It turns out there's a faction among the rulers who are content to coexist with these demons—the co-existentialists—and this leads to conspiracies and backroom deals. Furthermore, these people want nothing to do with the goddesses, so they're after Teoritta, forcing Xylo to work twice as hard to protect her. And finally, it turns out there are fairies—most of them simply beasts—that are more powerful than normal, even possessing the ability to mutate and blend in with humans. As you can see, there are many elements, and discussing them all in detail would be endless, but basically, it's a fight against demonic plagues while simultaneously battling dark and corrupt figures within the ruling temple.

La amenaza acá es un Rey Demonio que invoca a unas criaturas llamadas Hadas que por oleadas se van dirigiendo a las ciudades a generar caos. A medida que el anime avanza nos vamos dando cuenta que todo es más complejo de lo que parece a primera vista, resulta que hay un sector entre los que gobiernan que está de acuerdo con vivir mano a mano con estos demonios, los co-existencialistas y a raíz de eso empiezan a surgir conspiraciones y tratos por debajo de la mesa. Además de todo esto esta gente no quiere nada con las diosas por lo que van tras Teoritta por lo que Xylo deberá de trabajar el doble para proteger a su diosa. Y para finalizar resulta que hay hadas, la gran mayoría de ellas simples bestias, que son más poderosas de lo normal incluso teniendo la habilidad de mutar y mezclarse entre los humanos. Como ven son muchas cosas y hablar de todas ellas en detalle sería infinito pero basicamente es eso, una lucha contra plagas demoníacas al mismo tiempo que hay gente del templo gobernante que son oscuros y corruptos.

There are several things that stand out about this anime, and quite a lot. The first is the animation and visuals; it has a unique characteristic: everything is very colorful. They use very electric and bright colors that, when combined with the hyper-fluid and fast animation, can be extremely striking. Secondly, the style is very violent; the nature of the anime is pure violence with blood everywhere and body parts flying all over the place. When these two things come together, the result is shocking. Episode 11 is particularly brutal precisely because of this; there's a massive battle between two of the characters, and the result is more than outstanding. Visually, it's a spectacle. The design of the demons (hybrids between animals and flowers) is curious; it reminds me a bit of the Tensen from Hell's Paradise.

Hay varias cosas que destacan de este anime y mucho. Lo primero es la animación y lo visual, tiene una particularidad y es que todo es muy colorido, usan colores muy eléctricos y brillantes que cuando se mezclan con la animación hiper fluida y rápida puede llegar a ser extremadamente llamativo. Ayuda y esto es lo segundo que el estilo es muy violento, la naturaleza del anime es violencia pura con sangre por todos lados y partes del cuerpo volando por doquier. Cuando estas dos cosas se unen el resultado es impactante, el capítulo 11 es una barbaridad precisamente por eso, se da una batalla campal entre dos de los personajes y el resultado es más que sobresaliente. Visualmente es un espectáculo, el diseño de los demonios (híbridos entre animales y flores) es curioso, me recuerda un poco a los Tensen de Hell's Paradise.

Anyway, it's an anime that doesn't seem to be getting much attention, and it really deserves to be more well-known. The second season has already been confirmed, and the way the first one ended makes it look promising. There were a couple of really good plot twists that added surprise and intrigue to the story, and of course, some loose ends to tie up. It has everything: a solid story, really cool and unique characters—we don't talk about this much, but yes, they are great characters—and of course, the animation. There are 12 episodes, the first being an hour long, as I mentioned, and the last one half an hour long, meaning it has two extended episodes. I'll leave the trailer below.

En fin, es un anime que parece que no está siendo visto por mucha gente y la verdad es que se merece ser más conocido. Ya está confirmada la segunda temporada y por la forma en como terminó la primera la verdad es que promete. Hubo par de plot twist muy buenos que le dieron sorpresa e intriga a la trama y obviamente asuntos pendientes que resolver. Lo tiene todo, una historia sólida, unos personajes muy cool y particulares, no hablamos mucho de esto pero si, son grandes personajes los que hay y por supuesto la animación. Son 12 episodios siendo el primero de una hora como ya dije y el último de media hora, es decir, tiene dos capítulos extendidos. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

es una historia que realmente el significado para "heroe" cumple otro papel el cual siento que es muy injusto pese a la culpa que tengan, excelente post

For me the strongest point of that anime are the characters. Not only they are unique (especially the "heroes"), each has a story and even the supposed bad guys, like Lideo Sodrick from port city, have their reasons for acting the way they do, that are actually relatable.

Yes, they're all very unique because most of them were unjustly sentenced, which is why you empathize with them all. The anime is truly excellent; the characters are top-notch, honestly.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo con que este es de los mejores animes de fantasía oscura y acción que existen en la actualidad. En su momento dije que, si lograba mantener ese alto nivel de calidad audiovisual que mostró en su gran primer episodio, definitivamente sería una grandiosa obra. Lamentablemente por la gran competencia que tuvo en esta temporada de invierno contra otros gigantes como Frieren, Fire Force y hasta Jujutsu Kaisen, es entendible que no haya tenido nunca mitad de atención que merecía desde un principio.

Aún así, parece que le fue lo suficientemente bien como para que Studio Kai decidiera continuar con su producción para una segunda temporada. De verdad que dan ganas de saber qué sucede después de ese tremendo final que tuvo, sinceramente.

La gente siempre se queda con lo popular y por no ver/conocer estos anime los terminan matando. Me alegré también con saber que la segunda temporada está confirmada porque si, la forma en como termina es muy top. Quiero saber como acaba eso de la corrupción del templo y como Xylo termina consiguiendo su venganza. Ya lo dije pero creo que será de los grandes este año a pesar de no haber estado en el ojo de todos.

Es cierto, me sorprende mucho ver ahora a tanta gente, incluso dentro de esta comunidad de fanáticos del anime, que no conocen o no han visto joyas de animes como lo es Frieren, por ejemplo. No es que lo compare con Sentenced to Be a Hero, sino solo lo menciono como tal nomás.

Y si, ese final de episodio dió ganas de saber más, qué ocurre después y todo el tema de los reyes demonio y su relación con la inglesa y el gobierno, todo es tan misterioso y fascinantes... Lo que espero es que para esta segunda temporada que confirmaron mantengan el mismo nivel de producción y animación, e lo único que pido. No quiero volver a ver un OPM de nuevo. 🥴

Despite the premise and plot being near grimdark, it has enough comedy and wholesomeness in the right amount and instances, of course this makes it more apprehensive to watch since your rooting for most of the "Heroes" to live and survive.
