(ESP-ENG) Un fin de semana lleno de drama y poco futbol // A weekend full of drama and not much soccer!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
A few weeks ago many of us were excited that European soccer and its big leagues were going to start, the Premier League did it a week ago and both La Liga and Serie A kicked off this past weekend. It was logical to think that the disaster that some teams were being last season would not continue to be or that at least on the field they would show signs that the road to redemption was beginning but unfortunately that is not so, that was a story that I believed thinking that things would change but that is not the case, there are clubs that continue with the same deficiencies even though one of them has a new coaching staff and the other has swollen with signings in a market that has not yet culminated.
And yes, I am talking about Manchester United and Barcelona respectively. I think the English team is much more serious than the Culés, in that team there is something much deeper that is not working, a mental issue, performance, lack of commitment, I do not know, which is making the performances of those led by Erik ten Hag are a complete and utter disaster, a 4-0 against Brentford is something that should not happen. But Barcelona are not far behind, playing at home against Rayo Vallecano, a team that beat them in both league games last season, they were also unable to take all 3 points on Saturday. A Barca very familiar and known to the last tournament, same tricks and mistakes but Xavi asks for "patience".
Let's first talk a little about Manchester, a team that is currently LAST in the Premier League standings and they have not been able to score in the two games they have played in the league and with only one goal scored. Saturday's match against Brentford was supposed to be a kind of resuscitation considering who was that rival, one that in normal conditions United is capable of scoring without problems but nothing further from reality. This is a dead team, no soul, no grit, no understanding on the field, a defense that is a total disaster and a De Gea who had a day to forget and if you see the 4 goals ALL were defensive errors but of teams of children who are learning the basics of the sport.
To see a team as historically great as Manchester United play like this is saddening and I say this as a soccer fan. Then comes the question, who is to blame for all this? Ten Hag who has not been able to find the formula and does not motivate the players? or is it that there are players who are simply not performing as they should?.... If you ask me I would say that I would lean a little more towards the latter. I don't understand what Maguire is doing playing in that team, David de Gea, even though he is a good goalkeeper, I think there should be a replacement for him and not because of what happened this weekend, it is already something cumulative, Luke Shaw was also a forgettable player, the midfield and creative is missing, Bruno Fernandes is not even the shadow of what he was in part of last season and Cristiano can't do everything alone, if the balls don't reach him it is very difficult for the Portuguese to do anything. Games like yesterday's are what invite CR7 to want to leave.
Of the four goals De Gea was at fault in three of them, the first is a real madness the way the ball slips out of his hands and ends up inside the goal, you could not really believe it. But well, some say that Ten Hag is a coach who knows what it means to win, in five seasons at Ajax he won three, but the Eredivisie is not the Premier League and Ajax is not Manchester United, so I don't know how long that excuse can be maintained. In fact something curious happened and that is that after this defeat the coach took the day off to his players and put them to run a little more than 13 kilometers, a figure that means the distance in which Brentford beat them on the field the day of the match and even in that they are failing, they are not even running. If Manchester continues on this path, the future of the "red devils" will be extremely dark and desolate and the sad thing is that the squad they have is very top but it is a matter of attitude and aptitude, there is no other.
Is it unfair to ask Barcelona to do more than they did on Saturday? - Given all the background, the signings, the fact that Xavi has already had a run with the team and everything seen in the preseason, I would think not, Barcelona should always be asked to do more. This team was very similar to last season, a team with wet powder and it is ironic that one speaks like that considering that a few weeks ago they scored 12 goals in two games, then how do you explain what happened on Saturday? - Well, in my opinion there are two things: the great goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski who saved his team on more than one occasion and that the Rayo defense also knew how to contain the gale of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Dembelé because yes, the Frenchman had a good game on the left flank, in fact he was one of the best in the Catalan team.
But it must also be said that Rayo had at least 2 or 3 incredibly clear chances to take the game away from them and take the three points, in fact almost at the end they had a goal disallowed for a very small advanced position. So yes, this Barcelona is obliged to give more especially after having revolutionized the transfer market with the arrival of world class players that can be top in any other team and without forgetting that according to rumors more names can come to this team, in fact it can be said that Marcos Alonso is almost certain to land in Barcelona, an arrival that would strongly armor that defense.
The thing is that Barcelona created play and chances, they came with danger, there were shots outside the area due to the issue of Rayo's tight defense, as I said Dembelé destabilized a lot on his flank, with the entry of Ansu Fati in the second half we also saw more offensive power and the always fearsome Lewandowski in the area were elements that in any situation would have been defining but in this case it was not enough for Barcelona. I see it as something inconceivable, maybe I am being unfair but a team full of stars, because it is also a very powerful squad, that could not score a goal against Rayo, without discrediting the great defensive work they did, is something that a culé fan could not like very much. As I said in the beginning, Xavi asked for patience. I understand that these adaptation processes may take time and even more so if new players have arrived who are foreign to Xavi's style of play, but it should not serve as a shield for future setbacks, Barcelona is always obliged to win, those were the expectations they gave before the start of this season.
Finally and very briefly, I want to talk about what we saw yesterday in Chelsea's match against Tottenham. A complete spectacle that ended up being more important what happened off the field than inside. In itself this match has always had sparks, being almost neighbors is a rivalry that is lived a lot but this time it was lived more than the account. The match was being dominated by Chelsea, so much so that the blues ended up winning the first half but the balance was balanced a little in the second half with Tottenham forced to be a little more and so they got the tie. The thing is that Conte is very defensive, always looking to take care of results instead of going forward and with that draw he did it again, to close in a little bit behind.
From here everything gets out of control and both Conte and Tuchel take the game very personally to the point of almost coming to blows over things that happened on the pitch. The truth? - For me it was a great game, one of those typical Premier League games that have emotions that you don't see in any other league. In the end it ended with an agonizing equalizer for Tottenham on the hour and thus taking pure gold from Stamford Bridge because Chelsea was the one that proposed throughout the game.
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!
