(ESP-ENG) The Bloody Mary | A mix of comedy and horror - Short film Review!

Horror is something that's been a bit trendy lately thanks to the great movies we're seeing released. That's why today I'm bringing you something I stumbled across completely by chance while looking for the next DBZ movie I wanted to watch. It turns out we're talking about a short film made by Studio Wrong, an independent Japanese studio that specializes in 3D anime animation, which, if you ask me, isn't very common. The Bloody Mary premiered a couple of months ago as a pilot episode for what's supposed to be something bigger, or at least that's what the fans are hoping for, and they were very pleased after seeing this introduction to the story. And yes, if they wanted to and were able to develop something more substantial, it would surely be a success.

El terror es algo que últimamente está un poco de moda gracias a las grandes películas que estamos viendo estrenarse. Es por esto que hoy les traigo algo que me conseguí por pura casualidad mientras buscaba lo próximo que quería ver de DBZ. Resulta que estamos ante un cortometraje hecho por el Studio Wrong, un estudio independiente japonés que se especializa en animaciones de anime en 3D, cosa que si me preguntan no es muy común. The Bloody Mary se estrenó hace un par de meses siendo un episodio piloto para lo que se supone será algo mas grande, o por lo menos eso esperan los fanáticos quienes quedaron muy a gusto después de ver esta presentación de la historia. Y es que si, si quisieran y pudieran hacer algo más desarrollado seguramente sería un éxito.

But what's it about? Well, we have Betty, a young woman who dedicates herself to paranormal investigation and ghost hunting. She's a bit obsessed with it, but she knows that's how she pays the bills. With her is Seeka, a demon who got trapped in this plane after one of Betty's investigations. Inevitably, the two had to get along, to the point that they live together. One day, the young investigator gets a new job: to go to a haunted mansion to see what's going on with the famous legend of Bloody Mary, which is nothing more than standing in front of a mirror and repeating these words three times until the famous ghost appears.

Pero, de que trata? - pues tenemos a Betty, ella es una joven que se dedica a la investigación paranormal y a la caza de fantasmas, está un poco obsesionada con eso pero sabe que con esos trabajos es que puede pagar las cuentas. Con ella está Seeka, un demonio que se quedó atrapada en este plano después de unas de las investigaciones de Betty. Inevitablemente las dos tuvieron que llevarse bien al punto de que viven juntas. Un día la joven investigadora se consigue con un nuevo trabajo: ir a una mansión embrujada para ver que es lo que pasa con la famosa leyenda de Bloody Mary que no es otra cosa que pararse frente a un espejo y repetir estas palabras tres veces hasta que se te aparezca la famosa fantasma.

When they arrive at the mansion, they indeed find a dark and eerie place and decide to begin their investigation. I won't say any more from here on out so you can go and see what happens. I think this short film has two great strengths that could make it something really big and cool. The first is the story. In the short time this film lasts, it presents a plot that invites the viewer to ask questions, especially because of how it ends. What's more, interesting things happen along the way, including plot twists that add more mystery and intrigue. There's also a strong comedic element; the interactions and the way certain things are animated make watching this, even beyond the suspense, quite funny.

Cuando llegan a la mansión pues en efecto se consiguen con un lugar oscuro y tenebroso y deciden comenzar con la investigación. Ya de acá en adelante no les digo más para que vayan y vean lo que termina pasando. Creo que este material tiene dos grandes cosas o potencias que pueden hacer de este proyecto algo muy grande y cool. Lo primero es la historia. En el poco tiempo que dura este corto se nos muestra una trama que invita al espectador a hacerse preguntas y sobretodo por lo forma en como termina. Es más, durante el camino de la historia pasan cosas interesantes, hay hasta plot twist que le dan más "misterio" e intriga a todo. Decir que hay una gran carga de comedia en el aire, las interacciones y la forma en como animan ciertas cosas hace que ver esto, más allá de que esté el suspenso, sea gracioso.

The suspense is also very well done, and this brings us to the second point: the animation. Personally, I'm not a fan of 3D animation, unless it's something big like Disney or Pixar, because it generally doesn't turn out well, especially in anime, which is such a unique genre. But in this case, the animation is spectacular. There are moments that are incredibly realistic, where you genuinely wonder if you're watching real footage or not. The character design, all the visual effects—it's all very well done. You can tell there's care and a desire to make it something bigger. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's on par with anything else you've seen in 3D, even if it's well-known.

La parte del suspenso está muy bien representada también y es acá en donde entramos a lo segundo: la animación. Personalmente no soy fanático de las cosas hechas en 3D, a menos que sea algo grande tipo Disney o Pixar, porque generalmente no quedan bien hechas y menos en el anime que es algo tan particular. Pero en este caso la animación es espectacular, hay momentos que son exageradamente realistas en donde de verdad te preguntas si estamos viendo un metraje real o no. El diseño de los personajes, todos los efectos visuales, es algo que está muy bien hecho, se nota que hay cariño y ganas de que sea algo más grande. No miento cuando les digo que no tiene nada que envidiar de cualquier cosa que hayan visto en 3D por ahí que sea de nombre.

I don't know if this will ultimately become an anime or a movie; we'll have to see what the studio decides, but I hope it materializes into something worthwhile because I think it has potential. Reviewing something so short (just over 16 minutes) might not make sense to many, but for me, it's super interesting because it shows that anime is being made everywhere and in every possible way, and that's always a good thing. It's not the first time I've featured something like this, and it certainly won't be the last. The Bloody Mary is cool to watch; it has a simple story that fulfills its purpose: to entertain and give a taste of what's to come. I'll leave the short film here for you to watch because, yes, it's worth it.

Desconozco si al final esto va ser un anime o una película, habrá que ver que decide el estudio pero ojalá se materialice en algo que valga la pena porque creo que tiene potencial. Hacer una reseña de algo tan corto (poco más de 16 minutos) para muchos no tendrá sentido pero para mi es super interesante porque es la muestra de que se está haciendo anime en todos lados y de todas las formas posibles y eso siempre será algo bueno. No es la primera vez que traigo algo así y seguramente no será la última. The Bloody Mary es algo cool de ver, tiene una historia simple pero que cumple con el propósito: entretener y dar un abreboca de lo que puede venir. Les dejo por acá el cortometraje para que lo vean porque si, vale la pena.
