The third season of Record of Ragnarok recently premiered on Netflix, an anime I've been watching since it first came out a few years ago. For those unfamiliar with the plot, here's a quick explanation. It's a tournament where humanity's existence is at stake, pitting gods against the most prominent humans who ever lived. If the humans win, humanity is saved; if they lose, it will be annihilated by the gods. Each season focuses on three fights, meaning there have been nine so far. In this latest installment, the fights were: Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor and king of China) vs. Hades, Nikola Tesla vs. Beelzebub, and finally, Leonidas, the Spartan king, vs. Apollo.

Recientemente se estrenó la tercera temporada de Record of Ragnarok en Netflix, un anime que llevo viendo desde que salió hace ya unos cuantos años atrás. Para aquellos que no están familiarizados con su trama les explico rápidamente de qué va. Es un torneo en el que está en juego la existencia de la humanidad en donde pelean algunos dioses contra los humanos más prominentes que alguna vez existieron. Si ganan los humanos pues la humanidad se salva, si pierden será aniquilada por los dioses. Cada temporada se centra en 3 peleas, es decir, hasta el momento van combates 9 realizados. En esta última entrega las peleas fueron: Qin Shi Huang (el primer emperador y rey chino) vs Hades, Nikola Tesla vs Belcebú y finalmente Leonidas, el rey espartano vs Apolo.

From that first season, there's something I've always loved about this anime, and thankfully, they've maintained it. The fights aren't just fights; they aren't empty battles filled with punches and blood. Behind them lies an intention, a driving force, a backstory that obviously depends on each character's history and past. Usually, there are two sides, and it's almost always easy to take a side and support one of them, but here that's not possible. The reason is that the stories and motivations that drive both gods and humans are completely worthy of empathy and endearing, to the point that sometimes you don't want either of them to lose.

Desde aquella primera temporada hay algo que siempre me ha gustado de este anime y que afortunadamente lo han mantenido. Las peleas no son solo peleas, no son batallas vacías llenas de golpes y sangre; detrás de ellas hay una intención, un motor, un trasfondo que obviamente dependerá de la historia de cada personaje y de su pasado. Por lo general hay dos bandos y casi siempre es fácil posicionarse y apoyar a uno de ellos pero acá eso no es posible y la razón es que las historias y los motivos que mueven tanto a dioses como a humanos son completamente dignas de empatía y entrañables al punto que a veces uno no quiere que pierda ninguno.

What I'm trying to say is that anime has a remarkable ability to showcase the qualities, acts of honor, friendship, love, and even the suffering of each character, allowing viewers to truly understand who they are. They don't dwell on the negative aspects, and I think that's the key to why choosing a side is so difficult. I've always thought there's a certain resemblance to Demon Slayer because even the most ruthless warriors have a melancholic and sorrowful backstory that helps us understand their actions and how they ended up. Personally, I find that really cool because it seems like there aren't any real villains. All of this makes the plot a blend of story and the fights themselves, with flashbacks interspersed throughout to reveal each fighter's past.

A lo que quiero llegar es a la capacidad que tiene el anime de mostrar las cualidades, actos de honor, de amistad, amor y hasta en el sufrimiento de cada personaje para que así uno pueda entender quienes son realmente. No se enfocan en lo malo y creo que ese es el detalle del por qué es tan complicado elegir un bando. Siempre he pensado que hay cierto parecido a Kimetsu no Yaiba porque allí hasta las lunas más despiadadas tienen un trasfondo melancólico y triste que nos hace comprender el por qué actúan o terminaron como lo hicieron. Personalmente me parece muy cool eso porque pareciera que no hay malos del todo. Todo esto hace que la trama sea una combinación entre historia y las peleas en si y es que en medio de las mismas siempre hay flashbacks para saber de la vida de cada peleador.

The plot is anything but boring, the fights are spectacular, but it's true that some are more interesting than others. In this third season, the best was Qin Shi versus Hades; it's not to be missed, both for the level of combat and for the backstory of each character. The others weren't bad, but I do feel they lacked a bit of intensity. Mind you, this is always the case; it's impossible for every episode to be on the same level. Obviously, the action is the main focus, but there's also a kind of intrigue that makes it really difficult to predict the outcome of a fight, and that's a good thing—things aren't always so obvious.

Dicha trama es cero aburrida, las peleas son espectaculares pero si que es verdad que hay algunas que son más interesantes que otras. En este tercera temporada la mejor fue la de Qin Shi contra Hades, no tiene desperdicio tanto por el nivel en la batalla como por el trasfondo de cada uno de ellos. Las otras no estuvieron malas pero si siento que les faltó un poco más de intensidad. Ojo, esto siempre pasa, es imposible que todas estén en el mismo nivel. Evidentemente la acción es lo principal pero también hay una especie de intriga que hace que realmente sea complicado predecir el resultado de un combate y eso está bueno, no siempre es tan evidente la cosa.

The animation is another strong point. Being pure action, the fights have to be very fluid and easy to understand. They aren't the typical high-speed fights; instead, they're more deliberate, moving from attack to attack, with time between each blow, which ultimately allows you to enjoy and appreciate them a bit more. This aspect is truly well done. Judging by how the anime is progressing, I understand it only needs one more season, as there are three final battles left, and for those, we'll have to wait until at least 2027. I've always enjoyed this kind of thing; I think it's a great, super interesting anime. It's true that it might feel short, but what can you do? It's 15 episodes that go by very quickly. I highly recommend these battles between gods and humans. I've included the trailer below.

La animación es otro de los puntos fuertes, al ser acción pura pues las peleas tienen que ser muy fluidas y se tienen que entender muy bien. No son las típicas a gran velocidad sino que son más pausadas porque van de ataque tras ataque, hay tiempo para entre cada golpe lo que al final hace que se pueda disfrutar y apreciar un poco más. La verdad es que este departamento está bien logrado. Por como va el anime entiendo que la falta solo una temporada más porque quedan 3 peleas finales y para eso habrá que esperar por lo menos hasta el 2027. Siempre me ha gustado esto, creo que es un gran anime super interesante, es cierto que puede que se nos haga corto pero que vamos a hacer. Son 15 capítulos que se ven muy rápido. Altamente recomendado estas batallas entre dioses y humanos. Les dejo el trailer por acá abajo.
