Como ya saben estamos en vísperas de la entrega de los premios Oscars por lo que es casi obligatorio ponerse al día con las películas que más de que hablar están dando y miren que Poor Things lo está haciendo. Honestamente lo que he leído de este film es muy variado, es decir, a un porcentaje le fascinó pero a otro no tanto y es que después de haber sido visto hay que decir que no es un film para todo el mundo, es uno incomodo, irreverente, obsceno pero que en el fondo trae un mensaje importante, uno que parece que las personas les cuesta ver y asimilar; de ahí creo yo viene el poco entendimiento de la película.

As you know we are on the eve of the Oscars awards so it is almost mandatory to catch up with the films that are giving more to talk about and look at Poor Things is doing it. Honestly, what I have read about this film is very varied, that is to say, a percentage was fascinated by it but others not so much and after having seen it, it must be said that it is not a film for everyone, it is an uncomfortable, irreverent, obscene film but in the end it brings an important message, one that seems that people find it hard to see and assimilate; that's where I think the lack of understanding of the film comes from.

Poor Things es una oda a la libertad y así lo demuestra Bella Baxter (Emma Stone). Bella es una chica que vive en la casa de un reconocido y particular científico llamado Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Ella es producto de algo, de una idea de Godwin y es gracias a él que ella poco a poco comienza a crecer, a tener cierta conciencia y ciertos conocimientos de la vida pero al final del día se siente incompleta, su curiosidad por conocer y saber del mundo la lleva a tomar una decisión que la marcará para el resto de su vida. Esto lo digo porque no es que ella vivía en cautiverio pero si que es verdad que la libertad de hacer e ir a donde quisiera no la tenía.

Poor Things is an ode to freedom and Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) proves it. Bella is a girl who lives in the house of a renowned and particular scientist named Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). She is the product of something, of an idea of Godwin and it is thanks to him that she gradually begins to grow, to have some awareness and certain knowledge of life but at the end of the day she feels incomplete, her curiosity to know and learn about the world leads her to make a decision that will mark her for the rest of her life. I say this because it is not that she lived in captivity but it is true that she did not have the freedom to do and go where she wanted.

A su vida y de manera sorpresiva llega Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) un abogado prestigioso pero que también tiene sus detalles que lo hace bastante peculiar. La cosa es que Bella decide emprender un viaje alrededor el mundo con este abogado con la intención de expandir sus conocimientos y saciar su curiosidad con respecto a todo lo que le falta por conocer. Al final y sin quererlo será un viaje introspectivo porque sin darse cuenta ella comenzará a experimentar cosas que nunca en su vida había sentido, como por ejemplo la libertad y el hacer un poco lo que le da la gana sin estar atada a nada ni nadie.

Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a prestigious lawyer, arrives to her life in a surprising way, but he also has his own peculiar details that make him quite peculiar. The thing is that Bella decides to embark on a trip around the world with this lawyer with the intention of expanding her knowledge and satisfy her curiosity about everything she has yet to know. In the end and unintentionally it will be an introspective journey because without realizing it, she will begin to experience things that she had never felt in her life, such as freedom and doing what she wants without being tied to anything or anyone.

Como dije, este es un film que agita la bandera de la libertad pero no desde el lado feminista, no lo quiero ver así, sino desde un ángulo de personas e individuos como al final somos. Bella es una persona que casi toda su vida vivió renegada de las cosas que hacen que la vida sea disfrutable y con un sentido por lo que esa ausencia de esos sentimientos y sensaciones hicieron que esa parte de personalidad estuvieran apagadas, por decirlo de alguna manera. Es en este viaje donde ella deja atrás algunos prejuicios que eran muy notorios para la época y se dedica a vivir sin mirar a los lados, con toda la libertad del mundo pero también con una ingenuidad pasmosa.

As I said, this is a film that waves the flag of freedom but not from the feminist side, I don't want to see it that way, but from an angle of people and individuals as we are in the end. Bella is a person who almost all her life lived renegade of the things that make life enjoyable and meaningful so that absence of those feelings and sensations made that part of personality were off, so to speak. It is in this journey where she leaves behind some prejudices that were very notorious for the time and dedicates herself to live without looking to the sides, with all the freedom in the world but also with an astonishing naivety.

Vivir la vida sin filtros es complicado porque caemos en el juicio de las personas, en el famoso "qué dirán" y eso es algo con lo que Bella poco a poco aprende a convivir. Es una historia que a mi me pareció espectacular porque ahonda esa superación y evolución como individuos que muchos deberíamos de tener, Bella ante el mundo era nadie y terminó siendo un persona capaz, segura y con unas convicciones muy fuertes y todo esto gracias a las experiencias de vida. El mundo es un lugar oscuro, lleno de maldad y muchos males, cosa que Bella no sabía; por lo que ante semejante choque ella responde con una actitud que llama a la igualdad y un poco a la justicia. Es verdad que esto es un poco romántico y hasta cliché pero al final es lo que nos deja el film.

Living life without filters is complicated because we fall into the judgment of people, in the famous "what people will say" and that is something that Bella gradually learns to live with. It is a story that I found spectacular because it delves into that overcoming and evolution as individuals that many of us should have, Bella before the world was nobody and ended up being a capable, confident person with very strong convictions and all this thanks to life experiences. The world is a dark place, full of evil and many evils, something that Bella did not know; so in the face of such a shock she responds with an attitude that calls for equality and a little justice. It is true that this is a bit romantic and even cliché, but in the end it is what the film leaves us with.

A nivel de cinematografía es espectacular, el vestuario, la forma en la que fue grabada, la fotografía, los colores, la banda sonora, ambientación; todo está hecho para que encaje muy bien en lo que realmente es: una historia sumamente excéntrica. Hay que decir que la comedia está muy presente con un Mark Ruffalo antológico, de los mejores personajes que le he visto a este actor. Hay desnudos, hay escenas sexuales y hay cosas que son complicadas de ver, cosas que a algunos les parecerán poco digeribles. En lo personal la encontré muy atractiva, es un cine que cada vez se ve menos y eso es algo que hay que aplaudirle a Yorgos Lanthimos, su director, y por supuesto a Emma Stone.

The cinematography is spectacular, the costumes, the way it was filmed, the photography, the colors, the soundtrack, the setting; everything is made to fit very well in what it really is: an extremely eccentric story. It must be said that the comedy is very present with an anthological Mark Ruffalo, one of the best characters I've seen this actor play. There is nudity, there are sexual scenes and there are things that are complicated to watch, things that some will find not very digestible. Personally I found it very attractive, it is a cinema that is less and less seen and that is something to be applauded to Yorgos Lanthimos, its director, and of course to Emma Stone.

Lo que hizo Emma Stone en este film es de otro planeta. Es un personaje complicado y muy difícil de interpretar sin mencionar todas las escenas de los desnudos y sexuales que tiene que ya les digo son unas cuantas. Todas y cada uno de ellas tienen una razón de ser y van en pro de la construcción del personaje, a muchas personas les cuesta entender esto pero esa es la realidad. Fueron un medio para llegar al fin. La veo ganando un Oscar? - si, perfectamente, cuidado si no es el mejor papel que ha hecho en su carrera. Mención para Defoe quien también se marcó un gran trabajo siendo una especie de Frankenstein "moderno".

What Emma Stone did in this film is from another planet. It is a complicated character and very difficult to interpret without mentioning all the nudity and sexual scenes that she has that I already told you there are a few. Each and every one of them have a reason to be and are for the construction of the character, many people find it hard to understand this but that is the reality. They were a means to an end. Do I see her winning an Oscar? - Yes, perfectly, be careful if it is not the best role she has done in her career. Mention for Defoe who also did a great job being a kind of "modern" Frankenstein.

Una película que me gustó mucho, muy polarizada eso si, pero al final al ser esto un arte es comprensible que hayan opiniones de todo tipo. Le doy un 8/10. Recomiendo a todo el mundo que la vea porque siento que vale mucho la pena, la historia de superación y evolución es muy top a pesar de las infinitas excentricidades que verán. Un poco larga, casi 2 horas 20 minutos, eso fue lo negativo pero igual es bastante disfrutable. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.

I recommend everyone to see it because I feel it is very worthwhile, the story of overcoming and evolution is very top despite the endless eccentricities that you will see.
