We are in October, month of terror and fear par excellence and Netflix definitely knows it. This time it is with a series by director Mike Flanagan, known for having been behind the great series "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor"; and Flanagan is a MASTER of horror who knows and controls this genre so difficult to elaborate.

With Midnight Mass there is not much difference, that is, we are facing a series that shows us the root terror and pure style of the greats of the genre, Stephen King for example. After having seen the 2 previously mentioned series the truth is that I had high expectations about how this new story would be and honestly I was not disappointed, in it you will see MANY references of great titles and that makes it more interesting. Let's see then...

A bit of context: The center of this story is Crockett Island, a place that seems to be secluded and isolated by all civilization on the mainland. In that place several misfortunes have occurred over time to the point that only a little more than 120 people live there, most of them destined to spend the rest of their days on that piece of land that we could even think that it was forgotten by God himself.

From one day to the next, a new priest arrives on the island with the intention of replacing the old monsignor and thus ensure that the inhabitants keep their faith intact. Things start to get strange when, as the days go by, certain strange events begin to happen, be they miracles or phenomena of an evil and malevolent nature. At first nobody understands very well what is happening, but they will understand...

The characters are extraordinary and the cast is made up mostly of actresses and actors who have already worked with Flanagan in previous projects, so the chemistry and understanding between all of them is evident. But if there is one that needs to be mentioned it is Beberly Keane (Samantha Sloyan) who is the true villain of the series. It is mind boggling to me how a character can be so monstrous but not from a paranormal point of view but rather from the depth of human emotions, you are going to be amazed by her.

As a horror fan something I noticed is that in this series there are many similarities, as I said, with some stories by Stephen King. Some of them are "Salem's Lot" and "Storm of the Century", although it is true that there are similarities and reasonable influences, the real content of this series has nothing to do with those stories. The first talks about a vampire infiltrating a community and the second about a totally isolated town which is preparing for a big storm and in the process tempers start to flare up a bit.

I'm not going to say how much of all this is in the series because it would be a big spoiler but what I can tell you is that if you are King lovers, you are going to really enjoy this story.

Now, why do I talk about fanaticism? - Well, because it is a vital aspect that we see a lot here and also because the real monster of the series is that, the fanaticism and fundamentalism that exist in people and that although many deny it is also linked to religions. It is these two concepts that make many individuals act in such a way to the point of becoming real monsters and that is precisely what you will see in Midnight Mass.

To conclude I would say that it is an extremely introspective series as it touches on topics such as faith, the reason for the mere existence of human beings, the struggle against addiction and the eternal question of what happens after death; all this accompanied by excellent dialogue which denotes a very well done script. There comes a moment in which we are so immersed in these conversations that we can debate with the screen of our television, it is that deep.

In short, a magnificent horror series made by one of the greatest in the genre. It has everything: suspense, terror, blood, religious allusions, etc, that make a horror series a GOOD horror story. You can get it on Netflix, it consists of 7 chapters of approximately 1 hour long. I leave you the trailer so you can cheer up this Halloween month.
