(ESP-ENG) Mi último descubrimiento musical // My latest musical discovery!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
One thing about being a person who listens to music almost every hour of the day is that thanks to it and technology one is able to discover or find artists that had never passed through my ears and this is what happened to me recently with a singer/songwriter that through her style and voice I think she came to my playlists to stay. But what is particular about her and was the reason why I got hooked is that she sings a super delicate and well achieved reggae through covers of great hits of the music scene and yes, she also has songs of her own authorship.
I don't know if anyone around these parts knows her and has heard her but the truth is that the first time I heard her voice was an automatic "Like" on Spotify and from then on my search began. Her name is Natty Bong and very sincerely she has a very unique voice and style that if you like reggae but especially music with calm and relaxed beats then I'm sure this singer is for you. Today I am going to share with you the best I found of her because I feel that she is one of those artists that should be listened to a little more than I assume she really is so you can decide if she stays on your daily playlists or not.
- I Will Always Love You
She doesn't have her own Youtube account, or at least I didn't get one, like she has on Spotify. This song is the first on the list because it was the first I heard from her and that was enough for me to know how good a singer she is. To interpret this song, one that we know is one of the most complicated to sing of all contemporary music, the way she does it without trying too hard, without wanting to sound too high pitched and reaching those high notes suffering was something that I found incredible to be true. I consider reggae to be one of the most deceptive genres to cover something and you have to have that "angel" in the music to know very well what you are doing so that in the end it sounds like this cover of Whitney Houston. Besides the voice and the way you sing is vital for the result to be the best. One of the best versions I have heard of this song is undoubtedly this one by Natty Bong.
- Careless Whisper
Who doesn't know this all-time hit song by George Michael? - I think very few people do. Do you know why I like reggae so much? - Because it is one that can be combined with other unconventional genres and the result is brutal and an example of that is this cover that if you listen to it has some touches and influence with Jazz which makes it tremendously enjoyable. And mind you, it is not Jazz at all because it has the characteristic elements of reggae like the sound of the guitar and maybe a little bit of the rhythm of the drums. In fact if we listen to the original in George Michael's voice we can find many similarities in terms of instrumentation. I feel that this version is very faithful to the original but with the touch that Natty gives to her versions, it is one of the ones I like the most, the peace and harmony with which she sings is really amazing, it spreads a good vibe no matter what day you are having.
- Basket Case
We move to the 90's with one of the hits of the time by Green Day. With the previous ones I was surprised but here it was another level because taking this song to this world of reggae, one that is quiet and in this case slow, is something that I really did not see coming, a Punk Rock song that originally we are used to hear it with its energetic beat and high revolutions is one that can be difficult to listen to in another style. But here we witness something that in the previous ones we didn't, the use of brass, trumpets and saxophones, which believe it or not are other very common elements in reggae. The sound of these instruments is a plus because if there is something I like in this genre is the contribution of a good trumpet to a song. But here the protagonist is the sax, in fact it ends with a "solo" accompanying Natty's voice and the trumpet in the background. It is impressive how listening to this woman makes me happy, I am convinced that it is her voice, because there is no other.
- Sweet Dreams
Another song that lately is coming back to sound quite a lot, one that has its origins in the eighties by Eurythmics. Well, as it should not be a surprise by now, this singer also covered it and took it to her own territory in a very top way. It is remarkable how in each song there is an element to highlight, in this case we are if we pay attention in the second 58 approximately you will hear something that until now had not been heard and it is that game with his voice, those ornaments that in reggae are not seen much, or if but taken in another way, that the truth I think that although it may seem a little thing because it is not. There are also some questions/answers in the minute and a half with an interesting percussion and to close it seems that they give a tribute to the synthesizers and the sounds of the time always on the basis of reggae. Another brutal version of a song that wouldn't need it but is still one of the best.
- I Feel It Coming
Song by The Weeknd, one that is pure pop, R&B and Soul. I think this is the one that most resembles the original, mostly because of the vocals, here I feel that Natty is very similar to The Weekend's voice because that is simply the way he sings. In addition we hear metals again, which as I already told you are one of the best sounding things in reggae. Having already listened to the five songs I shared with you, you can make a better informed opinion about this singer who until a few days ago was a total unknown and now is one of the most enjoyable to listen to. Five covers, one better than the other, that show us how many hidden artists there are in the world making good music and that for different reasons are not heard. That's why Spotify's radio mode is one of the best things out there because it allows us to get to songs that by ourselves we wouldn't be able to find manually. Natty Bong is my discovery of the month, I think it is possible that from now on I will make this delivery every month depending if I get those artists that are worth listening to.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos escuchamos en la próxima!
