Is it possible to tell a story in just 18 minutes? Well, that depends on how the viewer is able to receive it, or whether it has the ability to resonate with people through its animation, its underlying themes, or how much we empathize with what it's trying to convey. I came across this short film while browsing Reddit, and it caught my attention because I'm a big fan of this kind of thing where creators, in this case Gigguk, a British YouTuber, embark on the adventure of telling a story in such a short time, hoping that it might eventually become something bigger, like an anime, for example. I can tell you right now that this has all the potential to be just that.

Es posible saber contar una historia en tan solo 18 minutos? - pues eso dependerá de cómo el espectador sea de capaz de recibirla o de si esta tiene la capacidad de llegarle a las personas bien sea por su animación, por el trasfondo o por que tanto empaticemos con lo que nos quieren contar. Este corto me lo conseguí leyendo Reddit y me llamó la atención porque soy fanático de este tipo de cosas en donde los creadores, en este caso Gigguk, un youtuber británico, se lanzan la aventura de contar un relato en tan corto tiempo esperando que en un futuro se pueda convertir en algo más grande, como un anime por ejemplo. Ya les digo que esto tiene todo el potencial para serlo.

This story tells the brief adventure of two characters, Rin and Daichi. Each of them lives in a different world: Daichi in Japan, and Rin in Euthania, a fantastical place where magic and mystical creatures coexist. I later learned that this is tied to Southeast Asian folklore. Between Japan, or our world, and Euthania, there's a portal that connects the two, and to travel from one to the other, you simply have to cross it without any trouble. But what's the plot here? They both decide to leave their respective homes in search of new things, a new life, to escape the monotony and routine of their days.

Esta historia narra la breve aventura de un par de personajes, Rin y Daichi. Cada uno de ellos vive en mundos diferentes, Daichi lo hace en Japón mientras que Rin vive en Euthania, un lugar lleno de fantasía en donde la magia y las criaturas místicas coexisten; después me enteré que esto está atado al folclore del sudeste asiático. La cosa es que entre Japón, o nuestro mundo, y Euthania hay un portal que es el comunica ambos lugares y para ir de un lugar a otro simplemente hay que cruzarlo sin mayor inconveniente. Pero cual es la trama acá? - que ambos deciden irse de sus respectivos hogares buscando nuevas cosas, nueva vida, alejarse de la cotidianidad y de la monotonía que suponían sus días.

Ultimately, it's a story of migration, of seeking new paths, and of self-discovery. What's cool is the different perspectives of the two protagonists; what's the same old routine for one is something new for the other—it's the duality of human nature. Daichi, who lives in Japan, didn't want the same job as his family. He was tired of living with his parents, so without telling anyone, he decided to head for "the other world." Rin, a kind of fairy from Euthanasia, lived with her father, but she no longer liked that quiet life, so she wanted to experience human life, have a conventional job, and do the things many of us dislike doing.

Al final es una historia de migración, de buscar nuevos rumbos y de descubrirse como personas. Lo cool son las diferentes visiones que tienen ambos protagonistas, lo que para uno es siempre lo mismo y la misma rutina para el otro es lo novedoso; es la dualidad del ser humano. Daichi, el que vive en Japón, no quería tener el mismo trabajo que su familia, estaba un poco cansado de vivir con sus padres por lo que sin decirle nada a nadie decide poner rumbo al "otro mundo". Rin, una especie de hada de Euthania, vivía con su padre pero esa vida tranquila ya no le gustaba por lo que quería experimentar la vida humana, tener un trabajo convencional y hacer lo que a muchos de nosotros nos molesta hacer.

But what's truly surprising about the plot is its twist, one I obviously won't spoil, but which I found quite interesting and moving. It might be hard to grasp at first, but as the minutes pass and events unfold, it all clicks into place. As I said, in 18 minutes it's a bit challenging to provide the necessary background for the story to have coherence, but I think that within its limited length, everything is perfectly clear, and above all, the message resonates. For some, it might seem superficial, but for others, it will be like a reflection of their own lives.

Pero lo realmente sorprendente de la trama es el giro que tiene, uno que obviamente no se los voy a comentar, pero que sí me pareció bien interesante y emotivo. Al principio puede que cueste darse cuenta pero conforme van pasando los minutos y las cosas es cuando uno aterriza y se hace el click de lo que está sucediendo. Como dije, en 18 minutos es un poco complicado darle el trasfondo necesario para que la historia tenga consistencia pero creo que dentro de lo limitado que es en cuestión de duración se entiende a la perfección todo y sobretodo el mensaje llega, para algunos será algo muy superficial pero para otros será como un reflejo de sus propias vidas.

Finally, let's talk about the animation, which is very polished and well done. The level of detail and delicacy is very evident; it's one of those things that makes you want to watch it because there's so much subtlety in every scene. I was truly surprised. And the soundtrack, something that's often overlooked, is also top-notch, composed by Kevin Penkin (The Apothecary Diaries), among others. In conclusion, it's a good short film with a story that has a lot of potential. I hope they give it the opportunity to develop it further. It has cultural value, a story that will resonate with many viewers, and a very interesting plot twist. I've included the short film below because it's on YouTube!

Finalmente hablar de la animación, muy pulcra y bien lograda. El nivel de detalle y de delicadeza que tiene es muy evidente, es de esas cosas que dan ganas de verlas porque hay mucha sutileza en cada escena. Me sorprendió mucho la verdad. Y la banda sonora, cosa que nunca se habla, también es muy top y es que estuvo a cargo de Kevin Penkin (The Apothecary Diaries), entre otros. Para concluir decir que es un buen cortometraje, tiene una historia con mucho potencial, ojalá le den la oportunidad de desarrollarla a niveles más grandes. Tiene cultura, una historia que no es indiferente para muchos y un plot twist bien interesante. Les dejo el corto acá abajo porque está en Youtube!

I remember always liking Gigguk's video when he recaps anime seasons. Always on point.

Se ve muy interesante y más para ser solo un corto de menos de 20 minutos de duración. Japón siempre me impresiona al momento de contar historias y no me sorprendería que en este caso suceda igual con una obra como esta.

Suena más a una obra con potencial para ser una serie corta, pero bueno. Excelente recomendación.

Es corta para el gran potencial que tiene, en efecto es así. Por eso dije que ojala le den el chance de hacerlo anime porque es una trama la cual perfectamente se puede desarrollar con más episodios.

La idea del corto es que podamos ver lo diferentes que podemos ser y que las realidades nunca serán iguales en ningún caso. Me pareció curioso eso, lo que para uno no funciona para otros si. Es muy bueno para ser tan corto.
