Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town South Africa!

This is Week 135 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is "Fight Oppression”!

I’ve always been a big fan of Tracy Chapman and I thought this was a great theme to tackle one of her songs! When I was young, I used to think I sounded like her! Now I’m a bit older and my voice is a little bit deeper, but I still love to sing her songs!

Now there are many Tracy Chapman songs that could have fit the theme. In fact, I might choose a similar theme to base my “Three Tunes Tuesday” set around tomorrow (I try to play the 3 songs myself as well as post the original videos – I do two covers and an original). However, probably the most famous Tracy Chapman song that fits the theme is “Talkin’ Bout A Revolution”:

Here is a video with the full song...

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP. If that sounds interesting, please think of a song you would like me to try and look out for my post on Thursday?

Lyrics for “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” by Tracy Chapman

*Don't you know
They're talking about a revolution?
It sounds like a whisper
Don't you know
Talking about a revolution?
It sounds like a whisper
While they're standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in the unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion
Don't you know
Talking about a revolution?
It sounds like a whisper
Poor people gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people gonna rise up
And take what's theirs
Don't you know you better run, run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run, run
Oh, I said you better run, run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run, run
'Cause finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin' 'bout a revolution
'Cause finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin' 'bout a revolution, oh no
Talkin' 'bout a revolution, oh
I've been standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in the unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion
Don't you know
Talking about a revolution?
It sounds like a whisper
And finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin' 'bout a revolution
Yes, finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin' 'bout a revolution, oh, no
Talkin' 'bout a revolution, oh, no
Talkin' 'bout a revolution, oh, no

No saben
Corre, corre, corre, corre, corre, corre
Corre, corre, corre, corre, corre, corre
No sabes

Awesome cover ! I always associate this song with Glastonbury '89 - even though it had been released the year before, this and "Fast Car" were played incessantly on cassette machines by the group of people I was with.

Oh my God! This was lovely, Tracy Chapman is a music icon and you have paid a fitting tribute to her, your work is just great; even though you say your voice is lower you manage to adapt very well.

Thank you for bringing this wonderful presentation to the community. See you soon!

Wonderful , 2 fantastic Tracy Chapman covers from you in one week. Great choice for this weeks theme. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do this three tune Tuesday. I had 3 songs I wanted to share this week so I've thrown them together in a TTT set which will be posted shortly.

This week you've inspired me to revisit "Baby Can I hold You Tonight" and this one. I have tried playing them in the past but it was over 2 years ago, I will probably be playing them both by the end of the week.

Thanks again for the inspiration :).

I really like the sound of your guitar that little bit lower...what a fab song you chose and it really suits your voice too. Tracy Chapman is a fantastic writer. This was very enjoyable to listen to.

My God, you have one of the most beautiful voices I've come across in this community. I can't stop listening to this song and the lyrics and melodies are just so amazing. This is the first time I'm hearing this song and I'm so thankful to you for bringing it to my ears. I can't wait to hear more and more songs from you.

Awesome performance 👏👏👏
