MUSIC (Live Original Song video): WACKY INSTRUMENTS Part 3: Wine glasses and chopsticks!

avatar

Hello everybody on HIVE and especially those of the Music Community! I am writing to you from Cape Town, South Africa. The two hobbies I tend to post the most about on HIVE are my music and song writing (usually performed these days with fellow HIVER @clairemobey – please follow her!) and surfing.

Now usually when I get up on stage to play my/our own music or some covers, my main instruments are guitar, vocals, harmonica (played simultaneously on a rack) and, more recently, stomp-box. I’m trying to plan around at least one live song performance that uses a loop pedal as well.

However, I do love to mess around at home with other interesting sounds on whatever zany instrument I can find… or even make. With that in mind, part of my contribution posts to the Music Community will focus on the topic: Wacky Instruments!

PART 3 – Wine glasses and a pair of chopsticks

Yes, I’m getting desperate… until I follow through with my plans to acquire (or make!) some new instruments! Haha!

It’s a funny story that led to this topic. Before the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns happened, I was working hard and not making enough time for music. Then March 2020 happened, and like many countries around the world, South Africa was pushed into a strict lockdown. Unlike many other countries, our lockdown lasted the whole of 2020, and there seemed to be no end in sight as 2020 was coming to an end!

Because I was stuck at home nearly all the time, I was picking up my guitar much more often. I decided to set myself two challenges:

•Learn a new song every day for 100 days and send a recording of each to my mom!
•Start a Youtube channel and share a modern cover on Mondays, an older “throwback” cover on Thursdays and one of my original songs on Saturdays…

Well, I sent 100 songs to my mom – everything from Bob Dylan to Aha to Tina Turner! She started to really look forward to them…

I also did the Youtube channel for quite some time, sticking strictly to the Modern Monday, Throwback Thursday and Original Saturday schedule!

Eventually there came a week towards the end of 2020 where I asked myself if I would be able to cope and make the three videos for the week… without playing my guitar? Now guitar is my main instrument… I’ve never had a piano, keyboard or any other normal accompanying instrument besides guitar!

So, I got creative and started digging around the house for whatever I could find!

For the modern cover on the Monday, I managed to tune an East African bamboo zither (called a valiha) someone had given me, and play a Maroon 5 song on it… (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/music-live-video-wacky-instruments).

For the throwback Thursday cover, I played the Cat Power version of an old song called “Sea of Love” on my grandfather’s old autoharp! It’s a song that my wife and I love so much that we used it as her entrance music to walk down the aisle to at our wedding! (https://ecency.com/hive-193816/@jasperdick/music-live-video-wacky-instruments-0f64a3f48feb8)

Now, besides guitars and harmonicas, which were not allowed, I was starting to run out of unusual instruments, and still needed to write something original and play it on a new instrument for Saturday!

I had a flash of inspiration and meticulously filled five wine glasses with water to get 5 different notes when tapped with chopsticks. That, along with a rattle in my sock, was enough to make a bit of a vibe! Now I just needed lyrics…

I started to think about how tough the 2020 lockdown had been for many people with businesses, or looking for work, and wrote the following lines…

So long Twenty-Twenty
When it came to hard times, you gave us plenty…
Now I’ve got no money and I’ve got no band
So I made this song, entirely by hand…
*

So long Twenty-Twenty
We are down to our last cent(ie)…
And there’s only more… lockdown in store…
Are they trying to make us all equally poor?

So long Twenty-Twenty
Most of us can’t pay the rent(ie)
And it’s been so hard to tell fiction from facts
But what’s going to happen when they get no tax (next year)?

Hello Twenty-Twenty One
Have the hard times only just begun?

Unfortunately, the hard times had only just begun – by July 2021, the country suffered almost apocalyptic rioting in two of its main economic provinces due to people’s hunger and desperation. This made things much worse as most of the malls were destroyed and would take time to rebuild by whichever shops that wanted to take the risk of starting all over again…

You can watch my wine glass and chopstick original song here:

THE END

Thank you so much! Any chance @clairemobey, @zakludick and I might get to meet you in person at the Barleycorn Music Club (the restaurant between the rugby fields at Villagers in Claremont) from 7:30 on Tuesday 9 August? It's a public holiday and it should all be over by 10pm!

Thank you! Haha I don't know about "coolest", but maybe it does go to show that you can still make music with everyday objects when you don't have an instrument!

I see you are in a punk rock band?

Hi @jasperdick

It's very interesting this content, creating music in that way. I always watch your videos from here and I had not gone through your YouTube channel, I see that this video is from 2020, it would be great if you start sharing more updated material in our community that you have not shared before in another social network, or in case you share them that they are no longer the focal point of your publication.

Have a great day!

Hello @eugelys !

Thank you for this! Yes that's absolutely fine - all of my further ideas for posts (live original music performances, cover songs from home, and even this topic of unusual instruments) are all going to require modern videos that I haven't made yet! So that will be absolutely no problem, and I'm unlikely to use older videos again.

Just to be clear, are you saying you'd prefer me not to share the videos from Youtube at all? I'm new on HIVE but I understand there is an associated way of sharing videos called 3S that you tend to use in your posts... would you rather I share new videos on 3S first, and then perhaps only share the video to Youtube after the 7 days are up? I can definitely do that - I'm sure I have a South African friend who can help me understand how to use 3S!

It is up to you to choose between YT or 3speak ;)

Ah excellent thanks! So just more modern videos then:

Well, I have a live performance of original songs with @Clairemobey on Tuesday, where we are trying some new things on our songs!

Unusual instruments - I have some ideas that I haven't even tried yet! I hope they sound good enough to share!

How amazing how music can be made in so many different ways and at the same time be so great. I admire the creativity you have to be able to create. This one in particular is extraordinary. Yes, the covid situation was not easy for anyone and we are still fighting that war. But good thing, we can tell the story.

I would like to stress something to you my friend. One suggestion, just a detail, take very much into account what @eugelys tells you please. You have an incredible talent brother and these are details that as moderators we must take care of. I hope you understand and don't get discouraged I'm sure, that musical creativity is in you and it's immensely experimental.

Ah excellent - thank you for your kind words! Yes, as I said to @eugelys I have run out of old ideas and will have to share new videos from now on, both for this particular topic of unusual instruments and for my normal original and cover songs on guitar!

I think she's also suggesting that I share on a HIVE platform like 3S first, rather than Youtube? I will commit to trying to understand 3S! I'm still quite new to HIVE, but I think I have a friend who can help me!

Her comment according Google Translate: "I loved congratulations for your work. Greetings from Venezuela."

My response: Thank you so much! That means a lot, especially from somebody who seems to share a lot of music as well!

Mi respuesta: ¡Muchas gracias! ¡Eso significa mucho, especialmente de alguien que parece compartir mucha música también!

Greetings friend!!! Wao, how impressive that music can also come out of what you were playing, congratulations as it was something very original.

I encourage you to keep bringing quality content to the platform and to follow the advice that the moderators lovingly give you.

I could read that you are new here in Hive, so cheer up because you have a great talent and a lot to show us.

Greetings and thank you very much for bringing us your entry. Blessings

Thank you so very much! Yes, I am not discouraged but rather inspired at the moment! We have a gig of original songs tomorrow, there are some covers I really want to make videos of at home... and then I do have some ideas for wacky unusual instruments as well - I hope they sound good. So plenty of music to make and share when I can find the time!
