A cursed diamond, a giant golden statue and Lucifer. [EN-ES]
Hola a todos!! Hoy vengo a contarles sobre esta experiencia que tuve al ir con mi mamá de visita a un edificio muy representativo de mi país: El Capitolio Nacional. Este lugar que fue construido en 1929 es un punto de visita obligatoria tanto para extranjeros de visita en el país, como para los cubanos mismos. De hecho, es casi tradición hacerse la llamada por los locales “foto del guajiro”, que es hacerse un retrato en la gran escalinata donde se vea de fondo este monumental edificio, y se le dice así precisamente porque los nacionales que no viven en la Habana no quieren dejar de hacerse una imagen mostrando que están acá. Sería como ir a París y no tomarse una foto en la Torre Eiffel. Algo así.
El edificio recibió una reparación capital enorme que lo ha dejado quizás más hermoso que como fue inaugurado hace casi un siglo atrás. Tiene en su interior un valor tan grande que según la Guía que nos acompañó durante el recorrido, es incalculable.
Cuando subes la escalinata de 55 escalones, construidos en granito vas a ver que el final de está custodiada por dos gigantes de bronce de más de 6 metros. Obras del artista italiano Ángelo Zanelli.
Hello everyone! Today I come to tell you about this experience I had when I went with my mom to visit a very representative building of my country: The National Capitol. This place which was built in 1929 is a must-see for foreigners visiting the country, as well as for Cubans themselves. In fact, it is almost a tradition for the locals to take the so-called "foto del guajiro", which is to take a portrait on the grand staircase where you can see this monumental building in the background, and it is so-called precisely because the nationals who do not live in Havana do not want to stop taking a picture showing that they are here. It would be like going to Paris and not having your picture taken at the Eiffel Tower. Something like that.
The building received a huge capital repair that has left it perhaps more beautiful than it was inaugurated almost a century ago. It has such a great value in its interior that according to the guide who accompanied us during the tour, it is incalculable.
When you climb the staircase of 55 steps, built in granite, you will see that the end of the staircase is guarded by two bronze giants of more than 6 meters. Works of the Italian artist Angelo Zanelli.

Al pasar el pórtico y adentrarnos en el edificio, ya podemos ver el colorido en piso y techos, el bronce refulgente, pero hay dos objetos en ese salón que son los protagonistas indiscutibles: La gran estatua y el diamante.
La Estatua de la República, que es su nombre, mide cerca de 15 metros de altura y se encuentra sobre un pedestal que, según nos contó la guía es de la misma cantera de Onix, de la que se extrajo el material para hacer la tumba de Napoleón Bonaparte. Esta estatua está construida en bronce y revestida originalmente en Oro de 22 quilates. Es la tercera estatua más grande el mundo, ubicada bajo techo. Se debe mencionar también que en la estatua aparecen tres símbolos zodiacales que nunca se ha podido determinar porqué fueron ubicados allí.
Passing through the portico and entering the building, we can already see the colorful floor and ceilings, the gleaming bronze, but there are two objects in this room that are the undisputed protagonists: the great statue and the diamond.
The Statue of the Republic, which is its name, is about 15 meters high and stands on a pedestal that, according to what the guide told us, is from the same Onyx quarry, from which the material was extracted to make the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte. This statue is built in bronze and originally clad in 22K gold. It is the third largest statue in the world, located indoors. It should also be mentioned that the statue features three zodiacal symbols it has never been determined why they were placed there.

El Diamante del capitolio, como se le conoce, tiene una historia muy interesante detrás. Algunos lo conocem como El brillante de la fatalidad o El diamante maldito. Se cuenta que la joya original, perteneció a la corona del último Zar ruso, Nikolái Aleksándrovich Románov (Nicolás II de Rusia) de alguna forma, esta joya había sido adquirida por una duquesa francesa. Un joyero adquirió luego la prenda por un monto muy alto para la época, al punto que la interesada, la primera dama de Cuba, esposa del presidente Alfredo Zayas se arrepintió de la compra y decidió vendérselo al propio joyero, el cual por azares del destino, queda ciego y se vio obligado a empeñar la joya por solo el 5% del valor inicial de la compra. Finalmente este fue adquirido por el entonces ministro de Obras Públicas para terminar allí en el capitolio, marcando el kilómetro cero del comienzo de la carretera central del país. Casi todas las personas que he mencionado tuvieron un final no muy feliz que digamos.
Pero si la historia acabara allí, no sería quizás tan famoso. Resulta que un día casi veinte años más tarde, el diamante fue robado y en el piso fue hallada una nota escrita a mano que decía «2:45 a 3:15 -24 kilates» . También había sangre. No se supo más nada del diamante maldito, durante meses, en el que nunca se encontró un culpable. Casi un año más tarde, el diamante aparece “misteriosamente” en un sobre sobre la mesa del entonces Presidente de la República. Hubo muchas teorías al respecto, pues las personas no se creyeron que el diamante había llegado a manos del presidente “así como así”. Actualmente el diamante original se dice que se encuentra resguardado en la bóveda del Banco Central de Cuba por temas de seguridad. Existe entonces una réplica que es la que se puede ver en la entrada del Capitolio y más recientemente le fue entregada a Cuba una copia exacta del diamante original, otro diamante, que es el que se ve en la foto en la vitrina.
The Capitol Diamond, as it is known, has a very interesting story behind it. Some know it as The Shining of Doom or The Cursed Diamond. It is said that the original jewel belonged to the crown of the last Russian Tsar, Nikolai Aleksandrovich Romanovich (Nicholas II of Russia). Somehow, this jewel had been acquired by a French duchess. A jeweler then acquired the piece for a very high amount for the time, to the point that the interested party, the first lady of Cuba, wife of President Alfredo Zayas, regretted the purchase and decided to sell it to the jeweler himself, who, as fate would have it, became blind and was forced to pawn the jewel for only 5% of the initial purchase value. Finally, it was acquired by the then Minister of Public Works to end up there in the capitol, marking kilometer zero of the beginning of the country's central highway. Almost all the people I have mentioned had a not-very-happy ending.
But if the story ended there, it might not be so famous. It turns out that one day almost twenty years later, the diamond was stolen, and on the floor was found a handwritten note that read "2:45 to 3:15 -24k". There was also blood. Nothing more was heard of the cursed diamond, for months, in which no culprit was ever found. Almost a year later, the diamond appeared "mysteriously" in an envelope on the table of the then President of the Republic. There were many theories about it, as people did not believe that the diamond had come into the hands of the President "just like that". Currently, the original diamond is said to be kept in the vault of the Central Bank of Cuba for security reasons. There is a replica that can be seen at the entrance of the Capitol and more recently an exact copy of the original diamond was delivered to Cuba, another diamond, which is the one shown in the photo in the showcase.

Siguiendo el recorrido, vamos a encontrar más curiosidades, como el salón de los Pasos Perdidos. Con más de 120 m de largo y que fue construido para grandes recepciones. Se cuenta que se le dice así porque no se siente el sonido de los pasos al caminar por él, ni siquiera cuando son una multitud de personas.
Continuing the tour, we will find more curiosities, such as the Hall of the Lost Steps. With more than 120 m long and was built for large receptions. It is said that it is so-called because the sound of footsteps is not felt when walking through it, even when there is a crowd of people.

El Capitolio alberga en su interior muchísimos símbolos y curiosidades. Una de las que más llamó mi atención fue el Ángel Caído. Cuando la Guía del Capitolio nos contó que era una estatua de Lucifer, mi cabeza explotó. Y dirías, a ver Janet, el Ángel caído debería darte una pista no?! Pues no! No creas que es muy común, encontrar una estatua de Lucifer en un espacio público. Apenas si hay unas 5 o 6 reconocidas en todo el mundo.
Esta obra en bronce del artista italiano Salvatore Buemi, muestra el momento en el que Lucifer se levanta contra Dios. Fue regalada por el propio escultor al Presidente de la Cámara de Representantes el cual la donó y ocupa ese espacio desde el 1931. Dicen, que desde que se recibió como obsequio del escultor y su emplazamiento en el capitolio (más de 20 años) se desconoce dónde estuvo la escultura todo ese tiempo, algunos afirman que por temor, fue guardada en una caja en un sótano y nunca más se abrió hasta que se regaló al capitolio, otros que peregrino entre diferentes edificaciones, que al poco tiempo la rechazaban y pedían se ubicara en otro lugar.
The Capitol has many symbols and curiosities inside. One of the ones that caught my attention was the Fallen Angel. When the Capitol Guide told us it was a statue of Lucifer, my head exploded. And you would say, Janet, the Fallen Angel should give you a clue, right?! Well no!😝 Don't think it's very common to find a statue of Lucifer in a public space. There are only 5 or 6 recognized around the world.
This bronze work of the Italian artist Salvatore Buemi, shows the moment in which Lucifer rises against God. It was a gift from the sculptor himself to the President of the House of Representatives who donated it and has occupied this space since 1931. It is said that since it was received as a gift from the sculptor and its placement in the capitol (more than 20 years) it is unknown where the sculpture was all that time, some say that out of fear, it was kept in a box in a basement and never opened until it was given to the capitol, others that it wandered between different buildings, which soon rejected it and asked to be located elsewhere.

Encontraremos también Salas llenas de documentos historicos, cuberteria de plata y vajillas confeccionadas exclusivamente para el Capitolio, en donde todo lo que parece oro, es realmente oro.
Salas con muchisimas más historias fascinantes, de los cuales te dejaré imágenes más abajo. Para concluir voy a mencionar la gran cúpula del capitolio. Revestida completamente en Oro de 22 Quilates. El edificio al oscurecer se enciende y puede cambiar de colores en fechas importantes.
Este recorrido es una visita obligatoria si están en la habana, podrás conocer algunas de las otras historias que rodean al capitolio de cierto aire místico, además de poder disfrutar de una belleza increíble en cuanto a arquitectura, restauración y diseño interior de épocas pasadas.
