Experimenting With Light Trails and
Long Exposure photos :
(12 Photos) 1 of 2 posts

Hey, friends!

Despite my wholesome and rural upbringing, I went to a lot of rave parties as a kid and did a lot of drugs.

I played with glow sticks. I loved it. The cool, trippy energy of the rave is something I never get tired of. I felt more alive when I was at a rave, buzzing from the Disco Biscuits, the synth lines of the techno, and the glow sticks. The people at a rave are so inviting and all have a story to tell. The music is always so good. The DJ is always spinning something very different than what you expected, but it all works together to make you feel good.

One thing that was also at Raves, were glow sticks... Thinking back on it now, these glow sticks opened up the door to circus arts for me, which then launched me on a 10-year career of starting and running my own circus company. That story is not what this post is about, Today I'm talking say about cool, trippy lines from glow sticks.

When your eyes open wide, because of some chemical induced high, and people run around with them glow sticks, they leave some crazy trails in the air... You can achieve the same effect with your camera lens, and a lot less drugs. This is called long exposure photography.

I been wanting to do some long exposure photography for a while now, and last night I went out with some friends and took some pictures.

It was a perfect night for, as the rain had just fallen, so It created that glossy surface on everything.

We're going to do 2 posts about these pictures. Each post will have about 12 different photos in it, out of the bunch that I took that... I felt was okay. Come back tomorrow for the other twelve photos in the second post. So let's get to it.

The Daily Photos

This is my friend Thảo, We met on the beach one day when she was rollerblading. Got to talking and last night linked up to do some pictures. She brought another one of her friends along, called Anh.

This is one of the first photos we took to experiment with long exposure shots.

And here is Anh. I installed an app on my phone that could generate colored light from my phone screen, in this case green light, and use that to highlight The face.

Light_Shoot_1-17.jpg

in all these photos I asked the model to stand really still. The shutter was open for eight seconds to 15 seconds. I would run around them with the light and paint them very quickly to capture the moments.

Light_Shoot_1-26.jpg

not necessarily of the light trails, but I thought this looked cool. lol.

Light_Shoot_1-28.jpg

a little bit more of a dynamic pose.

Light_Shoot_1-20.jpg

I was trying to create some sort of butterfly wings with these.

Light_Shoot_1-22.jpg

having that 3D light element does create more depth I feel to the picture...

Light_Shoot_1-23.jpg

Another one with the Spider-Man type of pose.

Light_Shoot_1-21.jpg

Again using the colored phone screen app, trying to paint interesting colors.

Light_Shoot_1-18.jpg

And again this time looking more techno Tokyo back alley...

Light_Shoot_1-19.jpg

I do enjoy this one turned out.

Light_Shoot_1-25.jpg

Most these were an experiment on how to capture some interesting elements. I would literally press the shutter button on a two second delay, then run behind the model them with the light. Some Turned out Good Some Not so Much....

Light_Shoot_1-24.jpg

I would like to post all the photos at once but I was told it's probably not a good idea. so come back tomorrow around the same time and I'll post the remaining 12 pictures from the series.

I do hope you found these initial ones interesting and they spark your imagination great ways you can play with the camera. If you have any questions drop them down below in the comments.

Have an awesome day and see you all soon.

a very interesting photo, friend. So an experiment on a photo is very good. I'm currently looking for some photos for an experiment. But I haven't found perfect results because I'm just learning.

I really love the last photo. Something about the outfit your friend is wearing; the combination of beautiful glamourous sandals and dress, with face mask, sunglasses and hat. It's a weird combination and it really suits the strangeness of the light trails.

Lol, this is Vietnam, people where some crazy outfits here... I totally love it. I think sometimes in the West we get saturated with media, and that media determines what we address as... It's still present here, but more influenced by others on social media who are not fashion models being told what to wear. :D

Thanks for the comment as well Have a !PIZZA and some !LUV :D

Crazy outfits sound much more interesting than everyone dressing the same. Haven't been to Vietnam, but it sounds amazing. Love the photo set.

Thanks for the pizza and luv!
