Building a Better Friendship: Ways to Make a New Friend (Some Thoughts)

Hi Friends,

When traveling, one thing I missed most was having friends to hang out with. Since being back in Danang, I have set my mind and intent on being a better friend to people. But, for me at least, the question is what does that mean. Today I wanted to talk about this and some ideas on this topic.

When you think about it, you’re going to meet a lot of new people in your life. From your job to your social circle, you’ll come in contact with a lot of people. Making friends can be challenging, especially if you’re a new adult without a lot of social connections.

There are many different types of people and that makes it difficult to figure out how to make friends. But new friends can be made even if you don’t feel comfortable right away. There are a few things you can do to help build a new friendship. Here are some thoughts on ways to get you started.

Be yourself

The first thing you can do to make a new friend is be yourself. If you’re shy, this might be super difficult for you. Being yourself can cause you to feel self-conscious and uncomfortable, but it’s the best way to meet new people. If you try to be shy or pretend to be someone you’re not, you won’t make any new friends. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Be yourself. If you’re not shy, don’t worry about trying to be someone your friend’s don’t already know. You can be yourself, have fun, and help your new friend get to know you.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

You can make a new friend regardless of their personality or their appearance. You don’t need to know someone’s personality or have a deep connection with them to make new friends. But you do need to have an open mind. You can’t judge someone based on their appearance. Yes, you probably shouldn’t walk up to a stranger and start talking to them without first a quick safety check. However, if you stop to look at someone’s appearance, you’re already judging them. Instead, try to focus on their personalities One way to not judge by appearances is to not make assumptions about people based on how they look.

Be a little vulnerable

This is a great way to get to know your new friend, and something that I struggle with. You can open up about yourself and your life a bit. Share your hobbies, what you like to do in your spare time, what your interests are. This will help you get to know your new friend and make them feel more comfortable in your presence. Friendship, after all, is built on trust, and trust is built on vulnerability.

Surprise your new friend with a random act of kindness

You don’t need a deep connection or a lot of things in common to make new friends. You can make a new friend by surprising your new friend with a random act of kindness. This can be as simple as introducing your friend to someone else in your life, or offering to go grab coffee with them and get to know them better. This can also mean surprising your new friend with a gift. You don’t need to buy a gift, but offer to take your new friend out for coffee or grab them a book from the library. Your new friend might not know what to get or show your friend the right way to give the gift. Sometimes I like to just give a chocolate bar, or if I have finished a good book, give it as a gift.

Be a good listener

This is a great way to build a new friendship. You can let your new friend know that you’re open to hearing about their lives and you’re open to asking questions. This lets your new friend know that you don’t feel the need to jump in and start asking your own questions right away. You can let your new friend know that you’re willing to let them talk first. Let your new friend know that you’re willing to let them take the lead in the conversation.

Try to see things from your new friend’s point of view

One way to help you build a new friend is to try to see things from your new friend’s point of view. When you meet a new friend, try to think about what you like about them. Try to think about what you and your friend have in common. For example, if your friend is introverted, try to think about why you like that about them. This can help you connect better with your friends and understand them better, which can lead to building a deeper friendship.

Introduce your new friend to your circle

This can be confusing if you’ve never done it before, but it’s a great way to build a new friendship. Introduce your new friend to your friends and see if they have anything to say about your friend. Introducing your new friend to your friends can help you gain more insight into your new friend and make your friend feel accepted and included by your social circle.

Conclusion

The best way to build a better friendship is to be there for your friends when they need you. Be a good listener, offer advice and support, and be someone they can rely on. Additionally, try to spend time together doing things you both enjoy, and make an effort to stay in touch even when you're not together. With a little effort, you can build a friendship that will last a lifetime.

I hope these thoughts can assist you in some small way in making better friendships. Let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions as well. :D

Cheers
