Time to Harvest and Solve The Problem of Growing Inconsistency - My Hydroponic Journal #14

Hello everyone and all members of the hive community, how are you today? May we all always be healthy and happy in every work and life. I also hope that we are given the ease of time and inspiration to always be able to contribute to this community. Previously, last Friday I received the sad news. My grandmother passed away and for three days I was in mourning and unable to contribute to this community.

As usual, every Monday I always share my Hive Garden Journal about my activities in growing various types of vegetables in the hydroponic system. This week, I harvested pakchoy vegetables, treated vegetables that grew unevenly, maintained the condition of my vegetable crops and analyzed some of the problems.

Harvesting Pakchoy

IMG_20220124_101838.jpg

Initially, I had promised the vegetable collectors to harvest the packhoy I planted on January 22, 2022, but because I was still in mourning. I asked to be pushed back to Monday.

Harvesting is the most enjoyable activity and is awaited by every farmer or person who grows crops. Every day, we always check the condition of each side of the vegetables we plant. Every vegetable that will be harvested can describe the struggle and hard work of everyone who does it.

I harvested about 14 kg of pakchoy today, the age of this vegetable plant is exactly 28 days. To get 1 kilogram of pakchoy vegetables, you need 15 planting holes for vegetables. For every kilogram of pakchoy, I sell for IDR 15K (1.1 USD) and I get IDR 210K (15 USD). Tomorrow, I will probably harvest all these vegetables.

We have to take advantage of the empty space we have in our homes, I have consistently grown vegetables for the last 4 years by using my yard. In the past, the yard of this house was only overgrown with grass and flowers that were not taken care of. Currently, I have used all the remaining empty space to grow vegetables using a hydroponic system.

Pakchoy Development

IMG_20220124_101143.jpg

In addition to the pakchoy that I harvested today, I also have several pakchoys of different planting ages. For this time, my vegetables are about 20 days old and I plan to harvest them next week (or the end of January). Some of the Pakchoy that I planted, experienced differences in planting plants. There are some pakchoys that grow more slowly, which makes the conditions non-uniform.

I did some sorting, and grouped the pakchoy by size. My goal is to group by size to facilitate the growth of these vegetables. If one pakchoy planting hole is forced to grow continuously with several other pakchoy that are larger in size, it will make the smaller pakchoy always unable to compete with the others. Better, we do the sorting so that these vegetables can grow optimally.

Approaching Chinese New Year, almost all of my pakchoy have been ordered by my customers even from the beginning when they were still in seed form. He said that during Chinese New Year celebrations, many vegetables are needed like this, because there will often be gatherings with family and friends to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Lettuce Development

IMG_20220124_101822.jpg

Last week, I transferred the lettuce to hydroponic media. This time, the age of this lettuce is about 17 days after sowing. Lettuce is a vegetable that grows slower than pakchoy or kale.

Like pakchoy, my lettuce has a non-uniform growth problem. Some lettuce, failed to grow. You can see, there are some lettuces that are still very small compared to some of the other lettuce. I tried to increase the nutrient levels, by using liquid fertilizer with a concentration of 700 ppm. In addition, some lettuce that did not grow optimally, I sorted and grouped them in one planting medium.

Kangkong Development

IMG_20220124_101828.jpg

I just moved this kangkong last week and now it has reached this size. The growth of kangkong in some hydroponic media is still very good and optimal, but some kangkong also have problems.

I didn't check from friday to sunday, and it turned out that some of the kangkong did not grow uniformly and the color turned slightly yellow. This is because, I do not routinely stir the water in hydroponic media so that the nutrients that I provide are stagnate and are not optimally absorbed for this kangkong.

Take all the time to rest and grieve. No need to pressure yourself.
Your plants are looking really healthy though. I remember I got into hydroponics back in high school. It was quite easy to grow some plants without soil and only with water.

thanks for the concern, we just need to grieve a little and make one step forward.

Hydroponics is very easy, but the biggest problem for gardening with a hydroponic system is consistency. Many of my friends just follow the hype and their hydroponic gardening equipment is wasted because they are not used.

Your plants look very healthy. How do you handle insects and pests? I don't see any insect damage on the leaves of your plants.

Thank you for the attention.
sometimes there are also frequent attacks of pests and insects, especially if some fruit crops such as mango and guava bear fruit. I usually use a garlic solution to deter pests.

What is the garlic solution? That sounds very good. I am about to start my spring beds and I want to keep them completely organic this year. What is the mixture or recipe for garlic solution?

the recipe is simple. You use one or two cloves of garlic and 1 liter of water, then blend with a mixer.. Let stand one night, then you strain and you can use it with a sprayer.

thank you for stopping by
Bukchoy is probably the same type of vegetable as pakcoy.
I've seen posts here about bokchoy, and I think it's just a difference in name or mention.
