Hello Homesteader
How are you today ? I hope that all of us are always given health and happiness in living this life. This time, I come back to this community to share interesting stories and experiences about various things and maybe can provide information or inspiration for all of my friends.

We all know that the lives of urban people and those who live in villages are very different. For the village community, it is easier for them to do homesteading because they have a large planting area. In the past, I knew one person in my father's village, he owned a laying hens farm, a rice field that produced rice and a plot of land where he planted various types of vegetables. He does all the production units of his food needs from his own hands.

My grandmother, in the 90s even had some ducks and chickens raised in the neighborhood. Our family barely bought eggs in that decade. But nowadays, it is very difficult to apply such a way of life, even in the village we rarely find it. Moreover, in a city where the land is getting narrower, and the residential concept is horizontal.

Currently, I am trying to make use of the empty space in my house by growing vegetables with a hydroponic system. Since then, we rarely buy vegetables because we almost certainly take them from my own hydroponic garden. The hydroponic system is indeed suitable and can be a solution for friends who want to start a homesteading lifestyle by starting to grow vegetables at home.

This time, I try to give you inspiration from my friend's hydroponic garden. My friend, Mr. Raden has hydroponic installations around with various models in his house. This friend of mine has a different way for his hydroponic garden. If I make a hydroponic garden in the empty space in front of my house, my friend makes a hydroponic garden on the second floor of his house or on the roof top.

My friend's hydroponic garden makes use of the remaining free space on the second floor of his house. Previously, before being used as a hydroponic garden. This place is used for drying laundry to dry quickly, because at that time my friend had a kilogram laundry business. Seeing the potential of commercial hydroponic vegetables and also getting fresh vegetables that are directly grown for their own families. He called me about two years ago and asked for help to set up his own hydroponic garden.

The location of my friend's house is on a narrow and small street, his house also doesn't have limited space. The land used is only 3.5 x 22 meters, but you can see from some of my photos, how he modified and made a proper and modern hydroponic installation that you might be able to imitate if you want. Some of the vegetables he gardens include kangkong, pakchoy, kale, you and also nai bai. When I came here, almost all of the vegetables had just been harvested and there were only a few left in the hydroponic installation.

My friend modified his rooftop into a semi-outdoor green house. For the frame, he uses mild steel construction which is easier and he can do it himself without having to pay workers or builders. For the walls or edges of this rooftop, vertical hydroponics with a circulation system is made. Hydroponics is arranged with 8 levels 22 meters long and flows very well. The hydroponic installation system is very practical, because for this many holes. Only need 1 control tub.

In addition, in the middle of the hydroponic garden, we also see several more minimalist and simple PVC pipe hydroponic installations. I remember last year, I had offered a used hydroponic pipe installation to my friend and he modified it into a hydroponic installation that was more suitable for his hydroponic garden conditions.

Hydroponic Installation for Hydroponic Vegetable Seedling
For seeding that is also more modern and practical, my friend modified the gutters and put all the rockwool pieces that had been sown by various vegetable seeds. Then, he made a flow of water with a mini water pump into the gutters so that the rockwool was always wet.

The water that flows into the gutters (nursery media), will fall back into the bucket and flow again with the pump. Yup, the seeding system is like a hydroponic pipe planting system. It seems, I was inspired to make a system like this in my hydroponic garden. If I make it like this, I don't need to use various containers to sow hundreds of seeds. I only need one medium like this.

I got a lot of lessons and inspiration from my friend's hydroponic garden this time. How he makes hydroponic gardens that are more practical and also more applicable. The practical way of gardening is indeed preferred by urban people. Therefore, the hydroponic system is developing very rapidly in urban communities who like to live practical, fast and productive. That's my story this time, see you next time.

Very very awesome!

I shall dabble in hydroponics once I get my ordinary veggie garden working.

I think you mean in your 3ed paragraph that the housing scheme is going vertical (up) and not horizontal (sideways). Even here in South Africa, you pay a lot for space.

We are very fortunate to have a large garden.

But this hydroponics caught my eye. I saw a mini version of it at the hardware store for demonstration purposes and I can see now a real practical system that is amazing!

Awesome post man!

hello @zakludick thank you for stopping by
That's right, the price of land for settlements is getting very expensive. Especially for the price of land in the middle of the city, it is no longer possible for people to buy it. Therefore, hydroponics can be a solution for urban farming because it can take advantage of narrow and limited land.
