Hydroponic – My Hobby and Business
Hello everyone and Happy weekend. How are you all ? I hope you all are healthy always. Every weekend, we always have something to look forward to, namely Weekend-Engagement. There are always interesting topics and stories that we can read on the weekends at THE WEEKEND Community. Like this weekend. Weekend-engagement 79 has the theme You and Your Hobbies. Wow, this is a theme anyone can write about that, because everyone has a hobby. What about me ?
We all have fun activities that we do when we are free or maybe we do it in our busy schedule. There are various hobbies that people usually do such as reading, fishing, exercising, watching movies, gardening, collecting jerseys or gundams or traveling. However, not everyone can do their hobby all the time, there are several things besides not having time and not having money.
In the end, the various hobbies that you do often make you spend extra money. What if you get a hobby that actually gives you additional income? Sounds really fun doesn't it? you earn money to do the things you love (it is a dream job for many people in this world).
I have a hobby of gardening since a few years ago. I was influenced by my mother and father, my mother was a fan of flowers and orchids, my father was an agricultural extension worker so that since childhood our yard was full of plants, flowers and fruits. This condition makes me also have the same hobby, but I do gardening by growing vegetables with a hydroponic system.
After I graduated from college, I worked in a chicken farm, a Non-Government Organization, and then started an online shop. I do hydroponic gardening just for fun, hoping to use the rest of the yard in my house for something more useful like growing vegetables and filling my free time. I hope that the vegetable harvest from this hydroponic can be consumed by me and everyone in my house.
The photos above are the beginning of my hydroponic gardening (I'm still very thin and handsome). I also grow lots of celery leaves. At that time I only had some Styrofoam media and I also tried to make a hydroponic installation using PVC pipes. This activity is very fun because it doesn't take much time, and it makes my house look more beautiful with various kinds of vegetables.
From 2015 to early 2020, I only had a small amount of hydroponic media, about 200 planting holes. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 that hit the whole world and Indonesia made many people lose their income and entrepreneurs closed their businesses due to the lockdown and regional quarantine regulations. I also experienced this sad thing, my coffee business was closed and I had no income.
In those days, most of the days of my life at that time, I spent more and more on caring for my hydroponic vegetables. However, as the Qur'an says, "Indeed, with hardship there is ease", I got a turning point in my life from my hobby.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made many people afraid and just doing activities at home. This makes people who work form home or quarantine at home look for activities. One of the popular new activities or hobbies in 2020 is Hydroponic Gardening. I get inspiration to turn my hobby into a business, when every day I have to serve various people who ask to be taught about growing vegetables with hydroponics, and there are also several people who ask for Hydroponic installations to be made at their homes.
Several years earlier, many people had stopped by and came to my house. However, at that time I didn't really think about making this hydroponic to earn money or start a business, just for my hobby and fun. In early March 2020, I started to make one order for hydroponic installations for other people, and I added to my hydroponic media to increase my vegetable production capacity, so that currently I have around 2000 planting holes in my house.

By the end of 2021, I have made almost 200 hydroponic installations with various sizes of planting holes. I am also a hydroponic consultant and make hydroponic installations for several companies, schools, campuses or individuals. One advantage for me, because even though I do this hobby for fun, I always do it with full thought and not carelessly, so that when I explain how to cultivate vegetables with hydroponics, people who ask me can understand.

Hello, @isdarmady! It was interesting to read about your passion for gardening. To be able to grow our own products is a very valuable skill to have, in my opinion. Also, I really liked the photos and the collages you made to display them. May I ask what program do you use for that?
