Hello everyone
How are you today ? I hope and pray that all of us are always given health and that all work and affairs are smoothed out today. One thing I'm sure of, all members of Architecture+Design are always in a state of enthusiasm and inspiration. Because every day, we will be invited to travel around the world, see interesting, different, unique and inspiring culture design and architecture. This time, I also want to take part in the Architecture+Design Community to share stories about my experience visiting a place that has interesting design and architecture to discuss and discuss. Come on, continue to see my post this time.

Some time ago, my wife and I had to go to the hospital to accompany my wife for routine control. We left the house at seven in the morning, in order to get a quicker queue. Unfortunately, when I arrived at the hospital, the internist who treated my wife was sick, so her control schedule was changed to next week. Because we had already left the house, we finally decided to find a coffee shop to work and also have breakfast.

Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop
Finding a coffee shop that is open in the morning is a bit tricky in Medan City. Usually, coffee shops that open in the morning are traditional local coffee shops such as Chinatown coffee shops, or local coffee shops that provide cheap, ready-to-brew sachets of coffee for workers. However, since the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been many aesthetic coffee shops or coffee spaces that have opened since 7 am, like the place I visited, Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop.

1669689268248.jpg

Kopi Pagi is a coffee shop located at Colonel Sugiono no. 10 B Medan Maimun District, Medan City. This coffee shop is located in a very strategic area, because it is surrounded by all bank offices, major insurance offices, government offices and others. The parking location is very limited, but don't worry, there are many parking attendants who can help us find a parking location.

So, what makes Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop interesting to discuss? Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop is a modern coffee shop concept located in a three-floor shophouse. The shophouse space is very narrow, because usually it only has an area of four meters with a length of about 25 meters. This simple and template shop building is very well transformed into a coffee shop that has character and characteristics from the choice of architecture and design.

From the front of this coffee shop, using very thick and clear glass doors and windows. We will see the brand and logo of this coffee shop. I really like the choice of font for the word "morning", as it gives us a new spirit. Especially seeing the logo character which is shaped like half a sun, looks cool and intimate.

1669689268220.jpg
If you pay attention to the front of this building, the walls of the second and third floors can be seen replaced with cement wall constructions in the form of boxes. The minimalist industrial impression seems to be highlighted from this coffee shop. This construction also makes a difference with the shophouses that are on the right and left of this coffee shop. We can also see the coffee shop logo in the middle of this coffee shop building. For information, "Pagi" is an Indonesian word which means "morning" and fits perfectly with the concept of this coffee shop.

Indoor Space Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop

Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop is a coffee shop that carries the concept of "coffee morning". This coffee shop is open from 7 am to 6 pm. The concept of “coffee morning” is still relatively new and rare for a modern coffee shop in my city. Almost all the popular coffee shops that I discussed here are usually open from noon to midnight. According to my friend who had studied in the Netherlands, coffee shops in Europe are usually like this.

As a coffee shop that opens early, Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop offers convenience to its visitors. When we enter inside, we will see a room design which is dominated by gray (like the color of concrete) from the floor, bar table and also the walls. The industrial-minimalist impression is very strong from the coffee shop, marked by the choice of colors and also the spatial concept created by the coffee shop.

1669689268146.jpg
1669689268654.jpg
1669689268792.jpg

I believe, the soul and vibe of a coffee shop is about layout and interior. The differences and uniqueness of the interior and layout of each coffee shop, create attachment to the customers who come to the coffee shop. Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop tries to make its interior identity, we will see a bar table at the front of the coffee shop. This coffee shop is able to make this narrow room look bigger with a very good spatial arrangement.

1669689268813.jpg
This Coffee Shop chooses furniture made of wood. We see tables and chairs using wooden tables that have a minimalist design. This wooden furniture is also combined with benches made of cement and bricks on the sides of the walls. I really like the vibes of this coffee shop. It seems that the indoor part of Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop is designed to do the job, very suitable to be your own personal coffee shop.

1669689268300.jpg

My favorite part is the front of this coffee shop. We will see near the coffee bar, there is one spot which I think is really cool. One table and chair spot facing the outside window, the reflection of the sun makes it look very aesthetic and instagramable. To reduce the monotonous and monochrome impression, Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop provides decorations and a few potted plants that make this room look more alive.

Semi Outdoor Space Ground Floor
This coffee shop not only has an indoor space but has several rooms that we can discuss. There is one semi-outdoor room located on the ground floor and the second floor which is used as a smoking area of this coffee shop. We will discuss the semi outdoor section first.

1669689269055.jpg
1669689268968.jpg

Semi outdoor space from Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop uses the back room of this coffee shop. This room is made with a very classy design and architecture. The back is transformed into a very modern and minimalist room with a very unique concept. I am interested to see how the sunlight, enters this narrow room perfectly. Usually, shop buildings don't have space like this, but this coffee shop makes a very cool architectural breakthrough by dividing the second and third floors so that sunlight from above enters the ground floor of this building.

In this semi outdoor space, using a combination of wood furniture and cement construction. We will see wooden tables with iron supports each, which are combined with long benches made of cement and concrete. In this spot, it is suitable for visitors who want to chat casually, and it is also free to smoke here.

1669689269101.jpg
The toilet of this coffee shop also has a very interesting design and architecture. The walls are made of bricks without cement or paint. Classic and industrial impressions are one thing that we can see from this part of the toilet. The impression of comfort and cleanliness is very important for toilets, because many people judge a building as decent when they see clean toilets.

Unfortunately, this semi-outdoor room is too monotonous and lacks the ornaments of life. Usually, in a place like this you have to put a few potted indoor plants that have bright green leaf colors or use dry trees or plants to give the impression of living in the room.

Second Floor Coffee Shop

1669689269496.jpg
1669689268901.jpg

Before us see the second floor of this place. We will see two staircases leading to two different roars on the second floor. Usually, shop buildings like this, only have one ladder to go up to the top floor. The stairs use cement and brick construction, but there are several iconic spots that we can see. I like one quote that is displayed in this room, very wise.

The second floor consists of two separate rooms. That is, if we want to move between rooms on the second floor, we have to go down the stairs and up another ladder. This concept is really cool to me. This part of the second floor, is an indoor non ac room, visitors are allowed to smoke in the room. The concept and design that is made is also very simple and minimalist.

1669689269496.jpg
1669689269448.jpg

The room on the second floor also maintains a minimalist design and interior. Like the color of the floor and walls which use a natural cement color, and the benches made of cement as well. Consistency in design and interior is one thing that is special about this coffee shop.

That's all the story about my journey at Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop. Hopefully friends get inspiration and information from this post. See you next time.

It is lucky to have places like that cafeteria in the early hours of the morning, without a doubt what I liked the most about it was the part of the bathroom with the brick walls, like the design in general and the area of the stairs also has its attractive touch for being unique and rustic.

I hope you can attend all the medical appointments well and that there are no more setbacks 🤗.

hello @ginethchira2301 thank you for stopping by
i think that's right, the unique bathroom and staircase gives a different dimension to this building. Several times I came to a coffee shop that used a shop house building, often I couldn't optimize the design properly.

I also hope that like that, our medical appointments and consultations will be made easier and smoother.

I saw your wife pic and wondering where if was. I have never heard of the coffee shop yet it looks so pretty. sadly, before i leave medan i have never tried morning coffee shop in medan eventhough its quite a popular concept lately in there. And thank God for that we dont have to run to Starbucks to get coffee in the morning now because many cheaper options available

We also accidentally found this coffee shop, as you know Colonel Sugiono Street or Wajir Street is an area that is very busy with motorized vehicles. One more thing, it turns out that one of the workers and the barista is an old friend of mine when we were both learning how to brew coffee several years ago.

The cafe is very aesthetic. In Ukraine, coffee shops have already become a place where we spend a lot of time, especially when the lights are turned off...
I would happily drink a cup of coffee at Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop)
Thanks for such a cool post

Just like in Ukraine, in Indonesia coffee shops are generally open late, usually from noon to night. However, it is very rare for coffee shops to open from early in the morning.

Spectacular coffee shop @isdarmady! It's great to know that the Kopi Pagi Coffee Shop tried to stay away from most of the competition by serving a special segment of the market: Early Birds - those who are morning people. 😊

On the other hand, as there are already lots of cafes existing and offering products and services for "Night Owls", it's certainly a great relief to find establishments opened in the early hours of the day. Thus with this diversity of choices, this is an excellent way to cater to people with different tastes and discerning lifestyles. 👍

Any design recommendations to enhance your featured coffee shop?

I think, it's a very good idea to make a coffee shop that starts serving since the morning. Since the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have been forced to work from home and choose coffee shops as their place of work. Therefore, the potential for this coffee shop business opportunity is enormous.

that seems like a pretty tough question. There are too many variables to make one favorite coffee shop, maybe it depends on the desired market segment.

Excellent feedback @isdarmady. There's a business niche designed to cater to every market segment, and this is simply crucial for fast-growing establishments like coffee shops. I wonder what the commercial future of cafes in Indonesia would look like, let alone the flourishing industries of architecture and design as one of their defining criteria for success. That remains for be seen. Have a safe and enjoyable one! 😊

I'm also waiting for that, what other innovations will be presented by the new coffee shop or cafe in my city. Of course, design influences from abroad are also very influential. I personally, really want to get a coffee shop or cafe that has a design and architecture with strong local and traditional culture.
