Hello CineTv
How are you friends? I hope that all members of the CineTV Community are always in good health and always happy in living this life. This time, I want to participate in the Cine TV Contest again. Cine TV Contest #28 takes a very interesting theme, namely “One Movie on a Deserted Island”. For a more detailed explanation of Cine TV Contest #28 you can click this link

I try to imagine, I am stranded on a deserted island and have a movie that I can choose to accompany my solitude on the island. I think, I will not choose a humorous genre movie, because jokes are only funny when heard or seen once. I also won't choose a movie with a romance genre, because I'm definitely getting dizzy because there is no outlet for desire. I think, I will choose a movie with a genre that is more gore, thriller, action, and full of blood. I will choose to watch Battle Royale (2000), as my movie that I will watch if I am stuck on a deserted Island.

Synopsis Battle Royale (2000)

Japan in the future will experience economic degradation, inflation and also high unemployment. The situation is further exacerbated by the decline in the morale of school students. The delinquency of school students in Japan is getting worse and tends to lead to criminal acts and violations of the law. The concerns and fears of adults about this phenomenon led the Japanese government to create a project called Battle Royale.

The Battle Royale Project was created by the authoritarian Japanese government to reduce the number of teenagers who would potentially commit crimes in the future. The Battle Royale project involves 3rd grade junior high school students (one class) randomly selected from all over Japan, where the students will be drugged and sent to a desert island to fight and survive for three days. there is only one person who can survive, if more than that then everyone will die.

My reasons for choosing this movie:

Unique Premise with Interesting and Slightly Absurd Storyline
Battle Royale is a thriller-action film that was produced in 2000. This film is considered a pioneer and also inspired many other films of the same genre, about survival games and surviving to the last second. As the title implies, Battle Royale is considered to be the best survival and battle royale-themed film of all time, including for me and will be very suitable as my friend to spend time on this remote island.

One of the Beginning Scenes in this MovieSource Picture

Battle Royale is a movie adapted from the novel with the same title. I have never read this novel, nor do I know any of the actors and actresses from this film. I watched this movie in 2011 or 11 years after this movie aired. I watched this movie because of one thing, that is, I've read an article about Quentin Tarantino, and he told me about Battle Royal (2000), a Japanese movie that became one of his favorite movies of all time. Quentin Tarantino is my favorite director, and I have watched all of his films. I think, one movie that Quentin Tarantino is referring to must be the great movie.

The premise is very unique, if we look at Squid Game (2021) or The Condemed (2007) Stone Cold Steve Austin, we can still understand and understand the background of why they killed each other. The Squid Game is a place to slaughter debtors to get large amounts of money. The Condemed became a battle royale arena for prisoners on death row to fight for their freedom. So, Battle Royal (2000) takes the premise of junior high school children slaughtering each other to become a moral lesson for society. Really, if I can think right now, I have a hard time accepting this idea in my head, but I can enjoy and like the movie after watching the whole story.

Brutal – Blood – Emotion Intensity
The first 30-45 minutes are the determination for friends who want to try watching this movie. As a person who likes action movies with blood flowing, I enjoy every scene in this movie. Battle Royale presents battles and bloodshed from students with various weapons ranging from pistols, sickles, axes, to stun guns. However, the brutality and blood that is created in Battle Royale is not just a pointless scene or just a slasher. There is a proper construction and framework so that the students are able to carry out the murder and massacre, despite the many plot holes.

Fighting and Shooting Scenes between SchoolgirlsSource Picture

The characters and characters in this movie take a balanced portion, so that every death and massacre of the characters is not in vain or just slaughtered. Moreover, the scoring music used is very precise so that the audience can feel tense and feel what the students are feeling. In addition, the students' characters are also made to have specific characteristics or different body postures from other students, so that even if I don't know the name (because there are too many characters), I can still know the student.

Battle Royale is indeed a gore movie full of blood and carnage, but the execution and emotions of this movie will be difficult to imitate by other movies. To imagine, friends and classmates, who may have been friends since childhood, have to kill each other and survive on a desert island for three days, of course, it is very heartbreaking. Moreover, these students kill each other because of a government project that is approved by all the people. On the one hand, we will enjoy battles, duels, chases, or students' strategies to win without being able to guess the plot or ending of this movie.

Students Participating in Battle RoyaleSource Picture

The part that became an emotion and a lesson for me when we could see how the attitude of the students towards this Battle Royale project. We must try to absorb it and imagine the position of being a student involved in this project. We can see it, there are students who have been bullied by other students using this project as revenge for other students, there are also students who commit suicide because they don't have the heart to kill each other with other students, there are also students who become psychopaths and kill their friends without realizing it. my goodness, there are also students who are resigned and there are also some students who are looking for a way to get out of the island safely without having to kill their friends. These characters get very precise character development so that the audience can get their emotions.

If we look at it from another point of view, Battle Royale is a movie that we can see from different perspectives. I see this film as a clash between the rebellious and courageous young generation and the conservative older generation. Battle Royale as a project was created by the older generation, as a way and their authority as parents to control the rebellious naughty teenagers.

If we are related to today's life, until this moment the clash between the older generation and the younger generation still often occurs. Parents always think and do things that they feel are the right actions for young people, while young people think that these actions are because of restrictions on their freedom of expression.

So, I think of Battle Royale as an adrenaline-pumping spectacle that also involves emotion in every scene. This movie is suitable to accompany me if I am stranded on one deserted island, watching Battle Royale every time when I am stranded will waste my time. I can watch it over and over again to memorize character names, or watch it again to keep my sanity and increase my gratitude. I don't really think about this absurd story idea, and also the moral message that this movie is trying to convey. I think it's just a matter of watching and thumping.

Why did I choose to watch a movie about massacres, fights and survival games, when I was stranded on a deserted island. Honestly, because I will have a lot of time, I can learn Japanese from this movie. Okay, this is one movie that I want or choose for me to watch when I am stranded on a remote island, do you also like movies or have you watched them?

In addition to watching full of thrills, watching this movie repeatedly made me able to memorize the names of the characters from this movie.

I had lots of fun reading your review! I have never heard about this movie, so probably I won't watch it because it isn't my type of movie. Maybe like you said it is worth learning Japanese with the movie?

hello @gwajnberg thank you for stopping by
well, maybe you've never heard of it because this is not your movie genre. But no problem.
I don't like watching horror movies, or ghost movies, but I can enjoy gore movies or thriller movies. ha ha ha

I said that, because I thought that if it was the only movie I could watch, at least my Japanese understanding would also improve.

watching "Battle Royale" always creates a deep impression for everyone who can enjoy it or who is not used to seeing blood dripping.

One of the interesting things about "Battle Royale" to me was just it's incredibly high level of emotionality which was just a common feature of a lot of late 90s/early 2000s movies that I feel can be lacking in modern cinema. Also it was just so super intense lol feel like I'm getting dramatic flashbacks just thinking about the movie haha

that's the point. Several films in that year had a very deep impression for every audience. In fact, if we only mention the title, we can already imagine the scene, maybe it's a "soul" that is hard to find nowadays.
