Greetings, dear animal-loving community. Today I am going to tell you about a scare we had with our beloved cat Pastrami. Last week she got sick and had to undergo emergency surgery for a health complication called Pyometra. In this post I will tell you about our experience with this situation so you will know the symptoms, causes and consequences of this disease And so you know what to do.

Symptoms

After the heat was over, last weekend, we noticed that something was wrong with Pastrami. She was down, her face was sad, she stopped eating and playing, she hid under the bed to sleep all day and night. On the second day of seeing her like that, I took her in my arms to examine her to see if she was in pain or had any injuries. It seemed that everything was in order until I noticed that a thick greenish-white discharge was coming out of her vulva, it was pus, although it didn't smell bad it was obviously not normal.

The information

I was alarmed because, although I have always had cats in my home, I had never seen anything like this with any previous cat. When in doubt, I searched the internet, although I know that nothing can replace veterinary care, I needed some guidance. I got the information that it was possibly an infection called Pyometra, and that it was a serious situation that could fatally affect my cat's health.

You can't imagine the anguish and sadness I felt. Every page concluded with an imperative, "you must take her to the vet", "she requires urgent surgical intervention". I felt horrible because at that moment I did not have the resources for an operation and the medical expenses that were surely required. But I was not paralyzed, I was not going to give up with the life of my beloved Pastrami in my hands.

Well, as it turns out, in my search for alternatives and solutions, I came across Mission Nevado's Instagram account. This is a veterinary care program of the Venezuelan State, and although in some places it does not work well, in others, like in my city, they work and do a great job, thanks to the willingness and loving dedication of the team of veterinarians and assistants who work there. The next day, Tuesday morning, I went early in the morning with my cat to be checked by a specialist of this organization.

The diagnosis

After waiting the necessary time, Pastrami was attended. An excellent attention, with a lot of professionalism, ethics and love, totally free of charge, left me quite calm. The veterinarian checked her and confirmed what I already suspected from my incipient research on the internet. Pastrami had an infection of the uterus, called pyometra, and a surgical intervention was necessary to avoid a fatal complication.

Pyometra is an infection of the uterus, in both cats and dogs, the uterus fills with pus and this makes them sick and in some cases can be fatal.

The treatment

She was prescribed three days of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, to stabilize her and prepare her for the operation. And I was given an appointment for the following Friday to perform an ovariohysterectomy, which is a surgical procedure in which the uterus and ovaries are removed.

I arrived very early on Friday, but Pastrami was not the only one with an emergency and we had to wait. The wait was a bit long, but it was worth it, as they took care of my Pastrami with all the patience necessary for everything to go well, as in fact it did. She came out of the operation excellent, of course, still asleep from the anesthesia. She woke up completely and ate the next day.

She was given antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and gastric protector, a soft diet for three days, clean the wound with iodine and a postoperative bandage.

The cause

According to what the veterinarian told me, pyometra occurs because, due to the hormonal load in her estrus period, the reproductive organ of the female cat (it also happens to some female dogs) expands, opens, and is exposed to contact with bacteria and microbes, when the estrus passes the uterus closes and those bacteria and microbes reproduce and infect the tissue of the uterine walls.

Pyometra can be open or closed. In Pastrami's case it was open, thank God, because this means that the pus comes out of her vulva. The closed pyometra is much more dangerous, because the pus accumulates and worsens the clinical picture of the animal in a short time. It is also more dangerous because it is more difficult to diagnose. In both cases the indicated treatment is the same, ovariohysterectomy.

The recovery

For the moment Pastrami has recovered very well. She is already a week after the surgery. She is eating well, ugh, too much, I would say. Her wound has healed positively. In two weeks we have to take out the stitches. And she has finished her treatment. She is cheerful, awake, playful, her personality is back. However, I have to keep an eye on her so that she doesn't go out on the street. At night I lock her up, I know she doesn't like it, but it's for her own good.

Thank God, Pastrami is already in good spirits.

Thank God it was just a big scare that was resolved in a happy way. However, the vet was very emphatic that one of the reasons why everything turned out so well and there were no complications in the operation and in the postoperative period is because I did not let too many days go by, I reacted in time and took her to the vet for a check-up in a timely manner.

So far this publication, I hope the information is useful. If you have a cat or dog, please keep a close eye on her state of mind and her health after the end of her estrus period. If you notice any of the symptoms I described here, do not hesitate to take her to a veterinarian as soon as possible. You can get more information in the link I left you at the beginning of this post.

Best regards, have a happy Caturday. See you in a future post.

I am glad to read that Pastrami is now well, that she was able to undergo surgery and not suffer the consequences of this disease. Fortunately, the pyometra she suffered was the one you were able to detect in time and get medical help. Best wishes to both of you.

Besos.
