PORTADA.jpg

TITULO INGLES.jpg

One of the great schools of my childhood was the popular proverb. I grew up listening to sayings of all kinds, pronounced not only by my family but also by friends at home. I don't know if the reason for using so many sayings was because they were very humble people, mostly of peasant origin, but it was rare when any conversation was not finished off with a saying, a kind of moral with which they wanted to emphasize some teaching.

Checking the feed of the hivers I follow I come across this post from friend @theresa16 about an interesting initiative dealing with popular sayings. I comment on the ones I remember the most.

Out of sight, out of mind

In this sentence is contained a great truth, if we do not witness the situation we suffer less. It may even be the case that we hear about something and it will probably have an impact on our mood, but never as if we saw it.

This applies very much to these difficult times we live in. For example, I know that my children who are away sometimes are having a hard time, they are very careful not to worry me and always say that everything is going well. However, I have reasons not to believe them, all the activities they do have been strongly affected by the pandemic, so their income must have been significantly reduced.

The same goes for me, they know that my wife and I only count on the income from HIVE, because what I receive from retirement and pension is derisory. So I proceed the same way, I always tell them that everything is fine, why worry them with the little daily dramas, they all read the reports and know how difficult it is to live in Venezuela. So they and I prefer to tell each other white lies every time we talk on Whatsapp.

No one knows the leaks in your house but the one who is stopping them

This popular saying is a great call to prudence, to be careful when we make judgments about other people. It is common to throw opinions left and right without stopping to think about what the other person may be experiencing. We see that in everyday life and, of course, here at HIVE as well, for the simple reason that those of us who are here are not aliens but human beings.

From time to time I read publications where somewhat thoughtless opinions are expressed about how people should act, even criticizing the way they manage their resources. I do not deny that many of these observations are made with good intentions, but let's go back to the saying I am commenting on, we should put ourselves in the other person's shoes to find out what their needs are, perhaps in that way we can better understand why they do what they do.

On the way we straighten the burdens

It is not easy for me to find in my repertoire of proverbs expressions of encouragement, most of them are about topics that warn about the bad actions of people, envy, irresponsibility, unpredictability, these were the topics that were most insisted on when I was a child. So to close I will leave this one that seems to me a little more hopeful.

The sentence has to do with the possibility of being able to stand up many times, of not putting obstacles before starting. Sometimes we fail to undertake a task, project or business because we evaluate all the details so much that in the end we come to the conclusion that we can't. And things don't have to be that way. And things do not have to be like that. The important thing is to dare, to launch into the adventure, to start the venture and step by step we will amend what is necessary. Never say no before starting.

As I write this publication I think that my children and granddaughters are completely oblivious to this proverb, in my daily conversations I never use proverbs, so they do not hear them often. I don't know if they know them from street school, but I get the impression that for a good part of the culture sayings are one of those productions in danger of extinction, something unfortunate indeed.

I have really enjoyed remembering these popular sayings, to give continuity I invite my friends, @mafalda2018, @damarysvibra, @mariaced, @lisbethseijas and friend @ceteb2008.

Thanks for your time.
