The immortal

The news had been kept secret, to make it known could have dramatic consequences. It was nothing less than offering immortality, one of the great dreams that humanity had cherished throughout the ages.

The discovery was made by chance. Scientists searching for new coffee flavors were dropping the coffee grounds from the blends into the laboratory's pots. On one occasion someone tripped and spilled a glass of corrosive acid on one of the plants, and to everyone's astonishment the plant remained as if nothing had happened...

From that moment on, the tests began and they realized that a certain combination of grains produced the effect of immortality. They tested with animals and observed that only one that inhaled the aroma of the new mixture became immortal. For safety reasons the effect was only tested on a single subject, the first immortal rat had been produced.

By chance, someone from the laboratory contacted me, told me about the discovery and offered me the possibility of doing the test to see if the effect also worked on humans...

If I inhaled that aroma I would have the possibility of becoming immortal, something that by the way had been offered to me many times. I asked for some time to think about it and went to the forest to my friend Clark, he had all the answers I needed to make the decision.

I had met Clark five years ago, on a full moon night while walking in the woods...

It was a day when I was heading home on a back road; it was already dark, but the moon was so big that the whole landscape was illuminated.

Suddenly I felt a flat tire, I pulled over and saw that I needed some rocks to keep the car from rolling while I changed the tire. I went into the woods and saw an unusual scene. A man about fifty years old was lying on a servant...

Although he was a bit far away and with his back to me I felt his voice in my head: Don't be scared, I'm about to finish...said the voice. I felt a presence beside me and there he was, with his mouth stained with blood...

I'm Clark," he said, holding out his hand. I'll help you with the tire. I looked at him with astonishment and he smiled. Don't worry, he continued talking while I couldn't find what to think... I have the ability to read thoughts as well as to communicate telepathically, he finished...

After Clark mounted the tire he invited me to his house, a small wooden building on top of a hill. He offered me some liquor and told me his story...

Clark was over five hundred years old, he had been turned into a vampire in a small town in Ireland. He was condemned to kill humans for a living and did so for some time, then he made the decision not to do it anymore.

He fed on animal blood, which gave him a permanent lack of energy, it was the price to pay not to live being a murderer...

After that night I became friends with Clark, I visited him frequently. He went out very little and confessed to me that my presence meant a great challenge, since my smell awakened his desire to drink human blood.

More than once he asked me very seriously if I wanted to be immortal, but the truth was that I was not interested in living forever in the darkness of the night.
The lab's offer was different, I could be immortal without any time restriction, but before deciding I talked to my vampire friend.

In our conversation Clark commented that he would gladly reverse the process. Being immortal wasn't as good as he could imagine, he told me with complete certainty.... And he began to give reasons:

At first it may seem very interesting, Clark remarked, but after a while you get into the hell of boredom...

A hundred years is enough time to know everything and after that the novelties don't make enough of an impact. The immortal always has the feeling that changes are very slow.

Then there is the matter of loneliness. You are condemned to a life without friends, without loved ones to accompany you because they will all die before you. You live in a permanent detachment...

And if that were not enough, you also live without emotion: you know that nothing can affect you, the sense of risk disappears and nothing is able to raise your adrenaline. The truth is that I would gladly exchange your mortality for my immortality," my friend finished...

In the end I convinced the lab to test Clark, I had nothing to lose, he was immortal. And if things worked out now he could also incorporate daytime into his life...

On the day of the test Clark inhaled the aroma of the coffee mixture. After a few minutes a grimace of pain set on his face, he looked me in the eyes and smiled, his breathing stopped...

Two immortalities kind of was a lot for one life.

Thank you for your time.

Greetings friend, a great story wrapped in that mystery and at the same time in search of that person who is able to smell that coffee and can react and have immortality, no doubt the results were not as expected, now there will be a mystery to be solved and with an immortality is enough.
