No es fácil describir el tipo de libro que es Seda, porque en verdad es un texto un poco extraño. Lo que sí es cierto es que no es una novela al uso común.

Baricco ha insistido en que se trata de una historia. Y quizá allí reside su magia. El autor es un experto narrador. Es capaz de mantenernos pegados a la obra sin que presente grandes nudos dramáticos o conflictivos. Si tiene algo de las historias de amor, pero de un amor enigmático e inconcluso. Seda es una obra reposada, amena, y con una escritura exquisita.

En cierto sentido la “novela” se parece a los relatos de iniciación, ya que Hervé Joncour es lanzado a la aventura, a un viaje que lo llevará hasta el mismo fin del mundo y en el que regresará convertido en otro. Luego de conocer Japón y su gente, ya más nunca nuestro “héroe” volvió a ver las cosas de la misma manera.

También Seda es una novela psicológica que indaga en el interior de los protagonistas. Todos los personajes que hay en ella tienen algo interesante, todos son portadores de grandes vivencias, todos tratan de encontrar algún sentido a la vida. Es de destacar el gran contraste que muestra el autor entre Hervé, un francés, moderno, y Hara Kei, el enigmático jefe japonés, un hombre amante de los pájaros y la soledad.

Escribo esta reseña luego de leer la novela por tercera vez. Le comento a mi esposa y ella me dice: “pero qué le ves, qué la hace tan interesante”. Pienso en ello y son varias las razones que me siguen atrayendo a este texto.

Por un lado, la maestría de Baricco en el uso del lenguaje. Uno siente que hay magia en este texto, que está escrito de manera sublime. Ninguna palabra sobra, la prosa fluye en completa armonía. Es un texto sabroso de leer. Eso es algo que a mí me atrapa de cualquier obra, me gusta que me deje un buen sabor, aunque esta expresión en sí misma sea poco descriptiva.

También me gusta que sea una historia que se desarrolla lentamente, sin apresuramientos. Va avanzando por insinuaciones. El conflicto se administra en pequeñas dosis, sin que se sepa plenamente qué puede ocurrir. Hay una tensión tenue, delicada, que hace surgir retazos de intriga en la historia.

He tratado de dejarles solo algunas pinceladas sobre esta excelente obra. Ojalá no les haya adelantado algo que les prive del placer de leerla. Si tienen la oportunidad búsquenla por internet. Siempre hago esta acotación pensando en la gente de mi país, donde es casi imposible encontrar en alguna librería un texto como este.

Dense la oportunidad. Una o dos tardes son suficientes para disfrutar de “Seda”.

In a certain sense, the "novel" resembles an initiation story, since Hervé Joncour is thrown into an adventure, a journey that will take him to the very end of the world and from which he will return transformed into someone else. After getting to know Japan and its people, our "hero" will never see things in the same way again.

Silk is also a psychological novel that delves into the interior of the protagonists. I am writing this review after reading the novel for the third time. I comment to my wife and she says: "but what do you see in it, what makes it so interesting". I think about it and there are several reasons that keep attracting me to this text.

On the one hand, Baricco's mastery in the use of language. One senses that there is magic in this text, that it is sublimely written. No word is superfluous, the prose flows in complete harmony. It is a tasty text to read. That is something that catches me in any work, I like it to leave me with a good taste, even if this expression in itself is not very descriptive.

I also like that it is a story that develops slowly, without haste. It moves forward by innuendo. The conflict is administered in small doses, without fully knowing what might happen. There is a tenuous, delicate tension that brings out snippets of intrigue in the story.

I have tried to leave you with just a few glimpses of this excellent work. Hopefully I haven't given you something ahead of time that will deprive you of the pleasure of reading it. If you have the opportunity, look for it on the Internet. I always make this remark thinking of the people of my country, where it is almost impossible to find a text like this in any bookstore.

Give yourselves the opportunity. One or two evenings are enough to enjoy "Seda".
