Building Our First Lego Set With My Boy

We Got a Black Friday Lego Deal

As a surprise for my children, I placed an order for some (50% off) Lego sets from Big Lots. We managed to get five small sets for the price of one large set. My children prefer the generic blocks, but this time I saw a SHARK for my boy Daniel.

It's a pretty complicated set, involves a lot of little pieces. The dark blue is tricky to see in the photos.

My boy has never put together Lego instructions, so this was his first time. I found the pieces for each page, and left it up to him to assemble it according to the photos.

He very carefully followed instructions and slowly the shark began to form.

Following Instructions, Rather than Following Your Heart

There were several times when Daniel found a Lego piece and started building the shark out of order. He would to look at the final outcome and try to build it himself using the pieces that were provided. I had to stop him and remind Daniel that if we want this shark to come together correctly, we have to carefully follow the instructions.

There's nothing wrong with exploring with your own imagination, building something from scratch however you want - even if you are inspired by a photo or another Lego set. But if Daniel wants to build THIS lego set, he cannot simply grab one piece and begin building on his own, we were given instructions for a reason.

God's Perspective

I'm certainly not God, I can't fully see things from His perspective - but it seems like that this is how He views us. Like a Father helping his son follow the instructions. Otherwise the father is not going to get the outcome he desires.

whoever does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:17

Our Father in Heaven has given us the instructions (the Torah) and the resources to fulfill it (the Spirit), yet we take the resources and start building according to our own will. We also have a final outcome we strive for and we try to build ourselves into that "image" of the goodness that God is looking for, but we don't follow the instructions. These instructions are to be written on our hearts to do them, because they are our life.

Set your heart unto all these words I testify among you today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this Torah, they are not idle words to you, they are your life. Deuteronomy 32:47

But instead of following the Father's instructions, we "follow our (own) heart" and our own instructions (philosophy) that we have written on our hearts. We forgive ourselves often when we fall short of the image that God is looking for in His people, yet we do not repent and seek after the instructions He gave us. We tell ourselves "we can't just "blindly" follow instructions, doesn't God want us to be wise and have our eyes open and possess the knowledge of good and evil?" Sounds familiar doesn't it?

And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Genesis 3:6

For the record, God did not say the tree was good for food, He said the day you eat of this tree you shall surely die. It was the serpent who said "you shall not die", and "you shall be as gods". What does a "god" do? Legislate morality and administer with divine authority. What do people do? Legislate their own version of morality in their heart (good and evil) and administer their own morality over themselves and others.

They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. Matthew 23:4

Yeshua tells us who is truly "blind", not those who obey the will of God, but those who deceive themselves claiming to see, when they are actually blind.

“Are we blind too?”, Jesus replied “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.” John 9:41

I don't claim to have perfect vision, there are a few things we see, but my vision is pretty hazy. Some day the eyes will clear and we will see the fullness of truth, until then we do the best we can.

He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and placed His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked. The man looked up and said, “I see men as trees walking.” Mark 8:24

This is just about where I am as a believer, a husband and father.

His delight is in the TORAH of YHVH, and on His TORAH he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does. Psalm 1:3

Lego is a lot of fun for the little guys, and certainly helps them learn quite a few skills. My youngest needs to hone his fine dexterity skills and building with lego's is great for that. It has also taught him to ensure that he has all the materials he needs before he begins to build.

Great stuff! Looks like you're having a great time with it.

Yes, it's amazing the life lessons that can be learned from this "toy". Thanks for commenting!

Lego is one of those timeless toys that both kids and adults can both enjoy - I have a lunar lander waiting to be built at some point!

I love these 3-1 sets - they are so well designed and great value given what you can build with them.
