One of the new skills I want to add to my CV is ‘pipa hunter’.
Not everyone can hunt a pipa. It’s not something that can be done on a whim. A pipa is a prized animal that is in danger of extinction. It takes a great deal of patience to wait for a sighting, and 20/20 eyesight to make out the phone number painted on its back. You could take a photo with your mobile, but you might be too flustered to get your phone out and snap the picture. So you have to look carefully and memorise the number. In my case, I do this by repeating it over and over until I’ve written it down.
That’s the first part – your first encounter with this exotic creature.
Then comes the second part: talking to the neighbours and agreeing to chip in together, because pipa meat is sky-high in price given its rarity.
Once that’s sorted, the hardest part begins: hunting down the pipa. As you’ve got the number written down (God willing, and provided you’ve seen it properly), you start to be persuasive – or, to put it another way: you bombard the pipa seller with calls. You keep at it morning, afternoon, evening and in the early hours. You keep at it, and keep at it. For the first few days, they won’t reply; they won’t take the bait; they won’t fall into your trap. Water tankers are very wary creatures and know that everyone wants to catch them. Everyone wants to have a water tanker standing majestically in front of their front door, with its ‘Drinking Water’ sign on its side and its long, powerful, thick hose. A water tanker is no ordinary thing. And it knows the hunter, it can smell him, it senses his fear of dying of thirst, and it will do everything in its power to make you give up.
But an experienced water truck hunter will persist in bombarding his prey’s phone until the water truck says: ‘Man, who on earth is this bloke who’s constantly calling me, who won’t let me sleep, who won’t let me have a go with my girl, who won’t let me eat, who won’t let me fight, who won’t let me live…’ And even if they have the chance to block your number, they’ll get cold feet; the doubt won’t let them live, and so, one of those days, they’ll pick up the call.
That’s when you have to strike, you old, manipulative hunter, and say to them: “Pipero, Pipa, brother, mate, compadre, eco-buddy, partner, consort, send me a pipe over here because at my place there are bedridden old folks, screaming children, people with chikungunya, people dying for a drink of water, dehydrated people, people who’d give anything for you to give them a hand, mate, eco-buddy, partner, consort… save me!”
Chances are he’ll just stand there thinking, and then tell you he’s got a list longer than his hose; he’ll blame the oil shortage, the power cuts, insist on his long list, hint that the dollar’s through the roof, hint that it’s the blockade’s fault, that it’s the fault of Acueducto and everything that governs it. He’ll make it clear to you that it’s you who needs him, that he may not have a degree but right now he’s stronger and more powerful than you.
And you, in the final blow, will raise the price of his service so that his list gets shorter.
And then there’ll be a silence; he’ll size you up from that silence… and he’ll fall into your trap of manipulation. You’ll have caught him.
Or perhaps it is you who have been caught.
But nothing in life will make you feel more powerful than seeing that beautiful beast parked outside the entrance to your block. And with pride, you’ll stand in the middle of the road to divert the traffic without saying a word to the drivers. The water tanker’s hose is a siren, just like an ambulance’s. The water tanker’s hose will have right of way, and the drivers will pull over to one side of the road and look at you with shining eyes. The drivers will see you as a successful hunter. 🥹
