[need help!] My witness node is missing blocks and I don't know why

avatar

I have recently lost my main computer but it has nothing to do with my witness node. My witness node runs on a VPS that has been online 24/7.

But since yesterday, on a streak of bad luck, I have been missing all blocks! I haven't even touched it! It missed 1, 2 blocks... But now it has missed 5 blocks and I have no idea why!

I have accessed my VPS and the blockchain is synced correctly:

It is getting blocks correctly, but for some reason, it misses all blocks it should produce!

I am going crazy. First, my laptop breaks and I lose everything on it. Now my witness node is not producing blocks anymore.

Can someone, please, help me debug the node? I have no idea what could it be. My mind is too fucked up by the streak of bad luck to figure it out by myself... I am going crazy how stuff just started going bad in a row...

How do I even begin debugging to see why I missed those blocks?

I'm just going to guess: is the time on your VPS synced correctly? Any resource issues? Eg.: some VPS hosts let you see graphs of CPU, Disk, Bandwidth activity. If there are any irregularities, there you got the answer.

I have checked those. Time is correct and there is more than enough CPU and RAM. There is 60GB of RAM and it barely uses it. It has 10 CPU cores but also barely uses them.

It is a cheap VPS but it worked for months without issues, that is what is bugging me. I have no idea what could have happened.

If I miss another block I am going to reinstall the node completely (but keep the blocks saved because they take time). I can't find any way to fix it

I see, did you also check a bandwidth graph - eg.: it could have been small internet downtime. Other than that, your system has been running up for quite some time, and while rare memory corruptions can accumulate, which a good restart can solve.

It look like you solved your problem? Your server just produced the block 57801462. One way to know the schedule of your server is by using the @arcange tool's here. As a witness, it's important to have access to the witness channel on Hive Mattermost (HF coordination, support, info...), for this you need to see with @guiltyparties (you can contact him via Discord) so that he gives you access 😉
