Para esta semana les quiero hablar un poco de esta película de Netflix que se estrenó apenas el año pasado (está a punto de cumplir un año desde que salió, Mayo 2022) y que fue protagonizada por Rebel Wilson. A pesar de haber pasado casi por debajo de la mesa me aventé a verla porque me gusta mucho ver a Wilson actuar.

For this week I want to tell you a little bit about this Netflix movie that was released just last year (it's about to be a year since it came out, May 2022) and starred Rebel Wilson. Despite going almost under the table I ventured out to see it because I really enjoy watching Wilson act.

Naturalmente al ver que Wilson sabía que sería una comedia, además el poster y el título te revelan un poco de lo que será el film pero pronto me di cuenta de que no era una película normal, que había algo que no me estaba llevando a la historia y de eso quiero hablarles hoy, de "Senior Year".

Naturally when I saw Wilson I knew it would be a comedy, plus the poster and title give you a little bit of what the film will be about but I soon realized that it wasn't a normal film, that there was something that wasn't pulling me into the story and that's what I want to talk to you about today, "Senior Year ".

La película comienza bastante interesante; una típica joven porrista en los primeros años de los 2000's que deseaba estar en todo y que todos querían ser como ella. Novio deseado, porrista líder pero todo lo que le faltaba era ser coronada reina del baile. Pero de pronto, luego de un accidente durante una presentación de porristas la dejó en coma por 20 años, cuando despertó su vida de adolescente ya había quedado atrás, ahora intentará recuperar el tiempo perdido tratando de recrear su último año del liceo.

The movie starts off pretty interesting; a typical young cheerleader in the early 2000's who wanted to be in everything and everyone wanted to be like her. Desired boyfriend, head cheerleader but all she was missing was being crowned prom queen. But suddenly, after an accident during a cheerleading performance left her in a coma for 20 years, when she woke up her teenage life was already behind her, now she will try to make up for lost time trying to recreate her last year of high school.

¿Buena premisa, verdad? A mi si me pareció interesante, y tal vez a algunos de ustedes que ya la vieron les gustó pero personalmente me enganchó más el trailer que la misma película cuando la vi.

Good premise, right? I thought it was interesting, and maybe some of you who have already seen it liked it, but personally I was more hooked by the trailer than the movie itself when I saw it.

El guión como les comenté me gustó, la propuesta es interesante, creo que todo eso de estar por 20 años en coma y despertar como si solo hubieses ido dormir por unas horas y ver que tu vida es un mundo completamente distinto al que solías conocer antes de que todo se volviera negro, me parece genial y lograron llevarlo pero croe que algún momento se perdió esa premisa durante el film.

The script as I said I liked it, the proposal is interesting, I think the whole thing of being in a coma for 20 years and waking up as if you had only gone to sleep for a few hours and see that your life is a completely different world than the one you used to know before everything went black, I think it's great and they managed to carry it but I think that at some point that premise was lost during the film.

La producción fue muy buena igual, ambientar todo a lo que era los principios del 2000, aunque parezca que fue ayer, fue hace ya 20 años y volver a ver cosas que antes solías ver normal y no creer que estás envejeciendo a verlas es una cosa loca, muy bueno el trabajo de ambientación. El contraste entre el manejo de la dinámica social hace 20 años atrás con la actual expresado en el film me pareció un punto acertado, dio mucho espacio para las bromas y la comparación de la generación pasada a la actual.

The production was very good as well, setting everything to what it was in the early 2000's, even if it seems like yesterday, it was already 20 years ago and to see things you used to see normally and not believe that you are getting older to see them is a crazy thing, very good job of setting. The contrast between the handling of social dynamics 20 years ago with the current one expressed in the film seemed to me to be an accurate point, it gave a lot of room for jokes and the comparison of the past generation to the current one.

El cast estuvo variado, para mi, muchos actores y actrices nuevos, sobre todo los más jóvenes que eran parte de la escuela donde Wilson estudiaba, no tenía conocimiento de trabajos previos de ellos pero me gustó ver a uno que otro de ellos actuar. El cast adulto si fue más conocido para mi, pero igual me encontré con caras nuevas que me gustó ver.

The cast was varied, for me, many new actors and actresses, especially the younger ones who were part of the school where Wilson studied, I had no knowledge of their previous work but I liked to see one or another of them act. The adult cast was more familiar to me, but I still found new faces that I enjoyed seeing.

Rebel sin duda fue la protagonista del film, más allá de serlo realmente, creo que su actuación estuvo bien pero nada en comparación a otras actuaciones, además creo que esta fue su primera película como figura principal y aunque no estuvo mal creo que pudo haber sido mejor.

Rebel was undoubtedly the protagonist of the film, beyond actually being the protagonist, I think her performance was okay but nothing compared to other performances, plus I think this was her first film as a main figure and although it was not bad I think it could have been better.

Dejando a la protagonista de lado, creo que entre los actores el que más me gustó actuando fue Sam Richardson, aunque ya lo había visto actuar en otras producciones, siempre fue limitada su participación, en cambio en este film pude ver más de él como actor y me gustó su trabajo. Fue el interés amoroso de Wilson y aunque la química entre ambos no estuvo al 100%, lograron compaginar bastante bien.

Leaving the protagonist aside, I think that among the actors the one I liked the most was Sam Richardson, although I had already seen him acting in other productions, his participation was always limited, but in this film I could see more of him as an actor and I liked his work. He was the love interest of Wilson and although the chemistry between the two was not 100%, they managed to get along quite well.

Zoe Chao fue un personaje sumamente gracioso y arrogante durante todo el film, esta mujer tiene el factor comedia bastante definido y lo capta bastante bien en producciones como ésta. Fue la rival de Rebel en la juventud y no lo dejó de ser después de haber salido del coma. Hay cierta humanidad en su personaje y eso lo dejó ver también en su actuación; pero no hay duda de que su personaje fue de mis favoritos.

Zoe Chao was an extremely funny and arrogant character throughout the film, this woman has the comedy factor pretty well defined and captures it quite well in productions like this. She was Rebel's rival in youth and didn't stop being so after she came out of her coma. There is a certain humanity to her character and she let that show in her performance as well; but there is no doubt that her character was one of my favorites.

Con respecto al resto de los personajes, aunque complementaron bien la historia y la mayoría logró conectar con narrativa otros simplemente debieron bajarles la intensidad; en especial a los personajes de la escuela del 2022 pero entiendo que son el reflejo de la generación actual así que, nada se puede hacer frente a la realidad.

Regarding the rest of the characters, although they complemented the story well and most of them managed to connect with the narrative, others should have simply lowered their intensity; especially the characters of the 2022 school, but I understand that they are a reflection of the current generation, so nothing can be done in the face of reality.

Aunque Wilson cargó con el mayor peso actoral por ser la protagonista, sé que no fue su mejor actuación, parecía que improvisaba algunas de las escenas y no lograron reacción alguna en mi, tal vez sea personal y a otras personas que vieron el film si les logró generar alguna reacción pero a mi en esta ocasión no lo hizo. Esperaba más comedia y aunque tuvo sus buenos momentos, siento que les faltó algo más.

Although Wilson carried the main acting weight for being the protagonist, I know it was not her best performance, it seemed that she improvised some of the scenes and did not achieve any reaction in me, maybe it is personal and to other people who saw the film if they managed to generate some reaction but to me this time it did not do it. I was expecting more comedy and although it had its good moments, I feel it lacked something more.

Las referencias a los años 2000s trajeron algo de nostalgia, aunque mis años fueron los 90's, creo que recrearon y llevaron algunos de los momentos de la cultura pop de aquellos años muy bien, no solo para que quienes los vivieron los recordaran, sino para que otras generaciones que tal vez hayan disfrutado de la película entendieran un poco lo que ocurría popularmente durante esos años.

The references to the 2000s brought back some nostalgia, even though my years were the 90's, I think they recreated and carried some of the pop culture moments of those years very well, not only for those who lived through them to remember them, but for other generations who may have enjoyed the movie to understand a bit of what was going on popularly during those years.

En lo personal, no creo que recomiende al 100% la película. Puede ser entretenida por ratos y creo que su duración en extensa para lo que realmente abarca el film, de igual forma, lo dejo a criterio de cada quien. Como les dije, la película se encuentra en Netflix por si se animan a verla.

Personally, I don't think I would recommend the film 100%. It can be entertaining at times and I think its length is too long for what the film really covers, however, I leave it to each person's discretion. As I said, the movie is available on Netflix in case you want to watch it.

Trailer:
