Have you ever heard that a film is "so bad it's really good"? Maybe that's not the best compliment a film can receive, but it's a compliment nonetheless. Today I'm here to tell you about a work that can be described in that way: Evil Dead II.

The Evil Dead saga is an example that nothing should stop you when you trust your vision. It was created by director Sam Raimi (best known for the Spider-Man trilogy) and pushed forward with minimal resources at the beginning of his career. At the time he had everything going against him, but Raimi didn't give up.

A bit of context

It all began in 1978 with Within the Woods, a 30-minute short film made on a budget of just $1,200. A little later, Raimi managed to release an extended revision of that short under the title Evil Dead. But I don't want to talk too much about that film, because while it was good and led to the release of a sequel, it's easy to ignore in the chronology.

There are countless inconsistencies from one film to the next for various reasons. One is that Sam Raimi never had enough budget to do what he wanted to do, but he learned to make the most of it. The first Evil Dead was almost a comedy film, and the follow-up manages to balance humour and horror exceptionally well.

The story begins by recapping the events of the first part with as few characters as possible. This is the introduction of Ash Williams, who replaces the character Bruce from the prequel and is played by the same actor: Bruce Campbell. Other important differences are made to suit, especially because Raimi's initial idea was to make what ended up being the part three.

Synopsis

Evil Dead II is about a couple who decide to travel to a remote abandoned cabin without much context. The evening seemed to be going pretty well until Ash takes an old tape recorder and decides to play it in a bizarre fit of curiosity.

What was recorded was the diary of the former owner of the house, who had devoted himself to studying an ancient book called the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, also known as the Book of the Dead. Things start to get ugly when the recording recites a passage from the book, which turns out to be an invocation of a terrible entity lurking in the forest.

The entity in question, named a Kandarian Demon, has a somewhat Lovecraftian concept. It has no visible physical form, though it manifests itself by producing a dense fog that behaves like a somewhat slow and unstrategic hunter.

But what this creature does is not kill in a traditional sense, rather it turns its victims into vehicles of demons. And once someone is possessed, the danger of death is for anyone who is not.

Ash is forced to kill his possessed girlfriend and ends up being possessed as well. It is then that he is saved by the timely arrival of Dawn. This gives Ash time to return to the cabin, his safest place, but his misfortune has only just begun.

About the film

The pace of Evil Dead II slows down tremendously once the creature is released, and from there Ash begins to show a bit of the qualities that would define him so far. Bruce Campbell's performance is saturated with exaggerated facial expressions, but that's not a negative in this case.

Evil Dead II has some very distinctive special effects. It's all done rather poorly. It's impossible to believe any scene that includes them. And this isn't even to do with its age, but its intention and budget. Most notable of all is the make-up. It's not perfect, but it works well and is convincing when it comes to the called "deadites".

The most interesting thing about Evil Dead II is that it doesn't take itself seriously, and that makes it all more enjoyable. My favourite scene is one where the living room starts laughing frantically (yes, everything in the room was laughing), and Ash, in a complete state of alteration, resolves that the best thing he could do was to laugh too.

But there are other more absurd details. For example, the Kandarian demon is always shown in a first-person perspective, and when he is in pursuit, it is possible to see how he comes within one step of catching his prey but fails to do so. There is even a brief change of shot, and when we return to the demon's perspective, he is much further back than in the last one.

Personally, what strikes me most are the dimensions of the cabin. From the outside, it looks ridiculously small. It hardly looks habitable. But when seen from the inside it looks comfortable and very spacious.

These decisions and many others are plus points because even though they seem like production mistakes, they are part of what makes it so much fun. That's why Evil Dead II is a bad film, not because it's not enjoyable, but because it's full of mistakes, bad acting and purposely mediocre effects.

You'll learn to laugh being scared

Despite everything, Evil Dead II does manage to have some scary situations. Although the moments that should be scary often end up being laughable, sudden scares are well executed. The film is unsettling without relying on that device, which also enhances its use.

The Henrietta scene is surely the most iconic. So much so that Sam Raimi managed to bring her back in Ash vs. Evil Dead and she stood out again. Her design is very different from the rest of the possessed, and she has a shape-shifting ability, making her look very artificial, but looking much more horrible in a good way.

A great protagonist

The most important thing in Evil Dead II is Ash Williams, a prototypical anti-hero who has all the elements needed to be iconic. Ash is susceptible to fear and shows it with great expressiveness, but he doesn't hesitate to do whatever it takes to survive. As absurd as the plot is, Ash is a good action protagonist in a crazy horror movie.

But the best thing about Ash is that he doesn't hesitate to do whatever it takes to defeat the possessed. Even when it was his hand that was possessed, Ash did what he had to do. And that serves as a moment of sacrifice that sets a precedent for his development.

Ash bears some parallels to Guts from Berserk, and I find that fascinating. Both have only one hand and a prosthetic that can be converted into a weapon. Both went through a traumatic event with demons and both ended up becoming demon hunters. The substantial difference is that Ash is totally to blame for his fortune for committing so much nonsense.

Ash Williams is extremely clumsy. No matter how many possessed he kills, Ash is an idiot and makes serious mistakes because of his stupidity. That makes him the satirical counterpart to Guts and any character with a similar archetype.

Conclusions

What I like most about Evil Dead is that it makes fun of everything, even itself, and it doesn't do it by imitating anyone specific. The saga has its essence and was innovative for its time. So, the next time you see a character killing demons with a chainsaw, chances are it was inspired by Ash.

Evil Dead II is a perfect film to watch if you like horror and enjoy dark humour. And in case you enjoyed it and want to continue, you can. The story continues with Army of Darkness (the third part) and the Ash vs. Evil Dead series. But unfortunately, that will lead you to a painful cliffhanger, as the series was cancelled when it looked like it was going to get more interesting. I'll leave you with that warning.

¿Alguna vez han escuchado que una película es «tan mala que es realmente buena»? Tal vez ese no sea el mejor halago que pueda recibir un filme, pero es un cumplido de todas maneras. Hoy vengo a hablarles de una obra que puede ser descrita de esa manera: Evil Dead II.

La saga de Evil Dead (traducible como “Muerte Maligna”), es un ejemplo de que nada debe detenerte cuando confías en tu propia visión. Fue creada por el director Sam Raimi (conocido por la trilogía Spider-Man) e impulsada con los mínimos recursos al inicio de su carrera. En ese entonces tenía todo en su contra, pero Raimi no se dio por vencido.

Un poco de contexto

Todo inició en 1978 con el corto Within the Woods (Entre el Bosque), un cortometraje de 30 minutos realizado con un presupuesto de apenas $1200. Un poco más adelante, Raimi se las arregló para lanzar una revisión extendida de ese corto con el título de Evil Dead. Pero no quiero hablar demasiado sobre esa película, porque si bien fue buena y dio pie al lanzamiento de una secuela, es fácil ignorarla en la cronología.

Hay un sinnúmero de incongruencias entre una película y otra por varios motivos. Uno es que Sam Raimi nunca contó con suficiente presupuesto para hacer lo que quería hacer, pero aprendió a sacar provecho de ello. La primera Evil Dead era casi una película de comedia, y la que le siguió logra equilibrar excepcionalmente el humor y el horror.

La historia da comienzo resumiendo los eventos de la primera parte con los mínimos personajes posibles. Esta es la presentación de Ash Williams, quien sustituye al personaje Bruce de la precuela y es interpretado por el mismo actor: Bruce Campbell. Hay otras diferencias importantes que se van haciendo a conveniencia, en especial porque la idea inicial de Raimi era hacer lo que terminó siendo la tercera parte.

Sinopsis

Evil Dead II trata sobre una pareja que decide viajar a una lejana cabaña abandonada sin mayor contexto. La velada parecía ir bastante bien hasta que Ash se encuentra con una vieja grabadora y decide reproducirla en un extraño arranque de curiosidad.

Lo que estaba grabado era el diario del antiguo dueño de la casa, quien se había dedicado a estudiar un libro antiguo llamado Necronomicon Ex Mortis, también conocido como el Libro de Los Muertos. Todo empieza a ponerse feo cuando la grabación recita un pasaje del libro, que resulta ser una invocación de un ente terrible que acecha desde el bosque.

El ente en cuestión, nombrado como Demonio Kandariano, tiene un concepto un poco lovecraftiano. No tiene una forma física visible, aunque se manifiesta produciendo una densa niebla que se comporta como un cazador algo lento y poco estratégico.

Pero lo que hace esta criatura no es matar en un sentido tradicional, más bien convierte a sus víctimas en vehículos de demonios. Y una vez que alguien está poseído, el peligro de muerte es para quien no lo esté.

Ash se ve obligado a matar a su novia poseída y termina siendo poseído también. Es entonces cuando es salvado por la oportuna llegada del amanecer. Lo que hace que Ash tenga tiempo de volver a la cabaña, su lugar más seguro, pero su mala fortuna apenas iniciaba.

Sobre la película

El ritmo de Evil Dead II desacelera muchísimo una vez que la criatura es liberada, y a partir de allí el personaje de Ash empieza a mostrar un poco las cualidades que lo definirían hasta ahora. La actuación de Bruce Campbell está saturada de expresiones faciales exageradas, pero eso no es algo negativo en este caso.

Evil Dead II cuenta con efectos especiales muy distintivos. Todo está hecho bastante mal, en realidad. Es imposible creerse cualquier escena que los incluya. Y esto ni siquiera tiene que ver con su tiempo, sino con su intención y su presupuesto. Lo más destacable de todo es el maquillaje, pues no es perfecto, pero funciona bien y es convincente cuando se trata de poseídos.

Lo más interesante de Evil Dead II es que no se toma en serio así misma, y eso la hace mucho más divertida. Mi escena favorita es una en la que la sala de estar empieza a reírse frenéticamente (sí, todo en la habitación se reía), y Ash, en un completo estado de alteración, resuelve que lo mejor que podía hacer era reír también.

Pero hay otros detalles más absurdos. Por ejemplo, el demonio kandariano siempre se muestra en una perspectiva de primera persona, y cuando se encuentra en una persecución, es posible ver claramente como llega a estar a un paso de atrapar a su presa, pero no lo logra. Incluso llega a hacerse un breve cambio de toma, y cuando volvemos a la perspectiva del demonio, este está mucho más atrás que en la última.

Personalmente, lo que más me llama la atención son las dimensiones de la cabaña. Desde el exterior se ve extremadamente pequeña. Apenas parece habitable. Pero cuando se ve desde el interior parece cómoda y luce muy amplia.

Estas decisiones y otras tantas son puntos positivos, pues aunque parezcan errores de producción, son parte de lo que la hacen tan divertida. Es por eso que Evil Dead II es una mala película, no porque no se disfrute, sino porque está llena de errores, malas actuaciones y efectos mediocres a propósito.

Aprenderás a reír muerto de miedo

A pesar de todo, Evil Dead II llega a tener situaciones atemorizantes. Aunque los momentos que deberían dar miedo con frecuencia terminan siendo risibles, sustos repentinos están bien logrados. La película es inquietante sin depender de ese recurso, lo cual también mejora su uso.

La escena de Henrietta es seguramente la más icónica. Es tanto así que Sam Raimi se las arregló para traerla de vuelta en Ash vs. Evil Dead y volvió a destacar. Su diseño es muy diferente al del resto de los poseídos, y cuenta con una habilidad que le hace cambiar de forma, haciéndola ver muy artificial, pero luciendo mucho más horrible en un buen sentido.

Un gran protagonista

Lo más importante en Evil Dead II es Ash Williams, un prototipo de antihéroe que tiene todos los elementos necesarios para ser icónico. Ash es susceptible al miedo y lo demuestra con gran expresividad, pero no duda en hacer lo necesario para sobrevivir. Por más absurda que sea la trama, Ash es un buen protagonista de acción metido en una loca película de horror.

Pero lo mejor de Ash es que no duda en hacer lo necesario para vencer a los poseídos. Incluso cuando quien estaba poseída era su propia mano, Ash hizo lo que tenía que hacer. Y eso sirve como un momento de sacrificio que marca un precedente para su desarrollo.

Ash guarda cierto paralelismo con Guts de Berserk, y eso me parece fascinante. Ambos tienen una mano menos adaptada con una prótesis que se puede convertir en arma. Ambos pasaron por un evento traumático con demonios y ambos terminaron convirtiéndose en cazadores de ellos. La diferencia sustancial es que Ash es totalmente culpable de su fortuna por cometer tantas tonterías.

Ash Williams es sumamente torpe. No importa cuantos poseídos mate, Ash es un idiota y comete graves errores por su estupidez. Eso lo convierte en la contraparte satírica de Guts y cualquier personaje con un arquetipo similar.

Conclusiones

Lo que más me gusta de Evil Dead es que se burla de todo, incluso de sí misma, y no lo hace imitando a nadie en específico. La saga tiene su propia esencia y fue innovadora para su época. Así que, la próxima vez que veas a un personaje matando demonios con una motosierra, lo más probable es que sea inspirado en Ash.

Evil Dead II es una película perfecta para ver si te gusta el horror y disfrutas del humor negro. Y en caso de que la hayas disfrutado y quieras continuar, puedes hacerlo. La historia continúa con Army of Darkness (la tercera parte) y la serie Ash vs. Evil Dead. Pero lamentablemente eso te llevará a un doloroso cliffhanger, pues la serie fue cancelada cuando parecía que iba a ser más interesante. Te dejo esa advertencia.

Esta obra es mi recomendación personal para Halloween.
