The Shells is a wild landscape where beach and nature come together in all its splendor, entering the real Patagonia.[ENG] / Las Conchillas un paisaje agreste donde playa y naturaleza se unen en todo su esplendor entrando a la verdadera Patagonia. [ESP]

The province of Rio Negro (Argentina) has always dazzled us with the extraordinary Valdes Peninsula, its penguins, whales, sea lions and other cetaceans that come to breed taking advantage of its warm waters, the last ones before entering the real Argentine Patagonia.

However, in the last few years, tourism has begun to develop not only for naturalists but also for those looking for its stupendous and paradisiacal beaches on the shores of the Argentinean sea.

Thus we find Las Grutas, located a few kilometers from San Antonio Oeste, to which from 2000 onwards Playas Doradas was added, a seaside resort near Sierra Grande in the southeast of the territory of Río Negro, where the building and infrastructure is still in full development.

Even the road that connects Sierras Grandes (headquarters of an important steel industry in the hands of a Chinese conglomerate) is still unfinished.

And before arriving to San Antonio Oeste we find the new hit of the coast of this Patagonian province: Las Conchillas, a wild seaside resort, still with very little diffusion at tourist level, without hotel infrastructures, where tourists go in camper, or as in our case, we had to improvise a giant umbrella because the sun is too strong in the early afternoon.

Following the very well paved road you reach a deep water port. And next to it a small urban center of recent formation and in the process of expansion with a restaurant, some bars and several summer houses for rent.

The beach is characterized by its white color that comes from a large amount of shells that are bivalve mollusks. Even a part of the beach is not sand but is formed purely and exclusively by the shells of the shells.

If the surprise of the beach of shells was a little further ahead another one was waiting for us: a series of dunes of very fine sand. Treasures of nature just a stone's throw from the sea. You can venture to explore every corner without taking any risk.

There are also services dedicated to watching the southern right whale that follows its path to Peninsula Valdes, sea lions and elephant seals, seals and even penguins on the coast, hiking, boating, etc..

There are 12 kilometers of coastline to walk and enjoy. Where the first thing that jumps out at sight is the absolute whiteness of the beach, products of millions of mollusk shells among which abound, and give a beautiful color in the midst of so much white, the purple clams native to these coasts, with a picturesque and striking violet color that as time goes by changes to other shades.

As a welcome and farewell sign says: "A paradise that we must preserve: don't step on the snails with your car or take them away, but don't forget your garbage".

La provincia de Río Negro (Argentina) siempre nos ha deslumbrado con la extraordinaria Península Valdés, sus pinguinos, ballenas, lobos marinos y otros cetéceos que llegan para procrear aprovechando de sus aguas cálidas, las últimas antes de entrar en la verdadera patagonia argentina.

Sin embargo en los últimos ha comenzado a desarrollarse un turismo no solo naturalista sino que también busca sus estupendas y paradisíacas playas a orillas del mar Argentino.

Así encontramos Las Grutas, ubicada a pocos kilómetros de San Antonio Oeste, a la cuán desde el año 2000 en adelante se le sumó Playas Doradas, un balneario cercano a Sierra Grande al sureste del territorio rionegrino donde la parte edilicia e infraestructura está aún en pleno desarrollo. Incluso la ruta que une Sierras Grandes (sede de una importante industria siderúrgica en manos a un conglomerado chino) está aún sin terminar.

Y antes de llegar a San Antonio Oeste encontramos el nuevo hit de la costa de esa provincia patagónica: Las Conchillas, un balneario agreste, aún con muy poca difusión a nivel turístico, sin infraestructuras hoteleras, donde los turistas van en camper, o como es nuestro caso, tuvimos que improvisar una sombrilla gigante porque el sol es demasiado fuerte a priumeras horas de la tarde.

Siguiendo la ruta muy bien asfaltada se llega a un puerto de aguas profundas. Y junto a él un pequeño núcleo urbano de formación reciente y en vías de ampliación con un restaurante, algunos bares y varias casas de veraneo para alquilar.

La playa se caracteriza por su color blanco que proviene de una gran cantidad de conchillas que son unos moluscos bivalvos. Incluso una parte de la playa no es arena sino que está formada pura y exclusivamente por las caparazones de las conchillas.

Si la sorpresa de la playa de conchillas era poco más adelante nos esperaba otra: una serie de médanos de arena muy fina. Tesoros de la naturaleza a dos pasos del mar. Se puede aventurar a explorar todos los rincones sin correr riesgo alguno.

Hay también servicios dedicados al avistaje de la ballena franca austral que sigue su camino hasta llegar a Península Valdés, lobos y elefantes marinos, focas y hasta pinguinos en la costa, caminatas, paseos náuticos, etc

Son 12 kilómetros de costa para recorrer y disfrutar. Donde lo primero que salta a la vista es la blancura absoluta de la playa productos de millones de valvas de moluscos entre los que abundan, y le dan un hermoso colorido en medio de tanto blanco, las almejas púrpuras nativas de estas costas, con un pintoresco y llamativo color violáceo que a medida que va pasando el tiempo va cambiando a otras tonalidades.

Como reza un letrero de bienvenida y a su vez de despedida: "Un paraíso que debemos preservar: no pises los caracoles con el auto ni te los lleves, pero no olvides tu basura."
