A retired CIA agent teams up with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder.

The Double, released in Spanish-speaking countries as La Sombra de la Traición in some countries and Misión Secreta in others, is a 2011 film directed by Michael Brandt - who was a screenwriter on the film "Wanted".

In addition to the well-known actor Richard Gere, there is also Martin Sheen, of whom we remember his performance - among other films - in "Apocalypse Now".

The film has received generally negative reviews from the public and the specialised press in general. However, I don't think it would be too utopian to imagine that the director's cinematic interest in making the film was not to show a history that is outdated in times of post-fundamentalist terrorism and a consumer society that has already forgotten what the so-called Cold War between the USA and Russia was all about. When China - hidden behind the Great Wall - did not even exist as a power and potential world danger in the minds of (practically) nobody. Much less in the minds of film scriptwriters.

Perhaps Brandt wanted to give an example of the fears that grip today's American society, and used as a metaphor the old Cold War struggle between the US and Russia, subterranean and laden with symbolism rather than real danger.

Above all because of the name of the supposed killer, both lugubrious and fantastical at the same time: Cassius, the name of an ancient Roman consul but also a boxing emblem of modern society.

The plot begins with the assassination of a US senator, which is very reminiscent of the modus operandi of a well-known Russian spy and killer known by the nickname "Cassius", although no one knows him in person. Much less his face, so much so that until then he was believed to be dead.

To hunt him down and capture him - or eliminate him - retired ex-CIA agent Paul Shepherdson (played by Ricard Gere in a very ambiguous role, hence much of the negative criticism) is called back into service, accompanied by young FBI agent Ben Geary (played by Topher Grace).

Perhaps the main flaw, and hence my conjecture that the director's aim was other than to show a simple spy story, is that we discover almost from the beginning who Cassius really is. He is in fact none other than Shepherdson, who has woven the whole web to take revenge on the murderers of his family.

And we also learn early on - rather than leaving it until midway through the film - that Geary is in fact a Russian spy tasked with eliminating him.

Tom Highland (played by Martin Sheen), plays his role unobtrusively as the superintendent who challenges him to prove his theory in the face of recent evidence from the recent murders that seems to indicate otherwise.

The plot unfolds with a certain complicity between the two characters, who know they've been exposed but don't want to make an attempt on each other.

What changes the plans is the death of the main person responsible for the murder of Shepherdson's family, giving Geary the chance to identify him as the alleged killer and thus end the story for good.

In this way Shepherdson will be recorded as officially dead while he can continue to live hiding his true personality, while the young Geary, who had already bought a plane ticket to return to Russia, realises that this will not solve his problems as a double agent and decides to stay in the USA and return to his family.

In this way each of the characters will have to live daily with their fears of being discovered.
