According to what I have read, for a thunderstorm to form, there has to be an updraft and this updraft has to be accompanied by moisture.
Added to this list is atmospheric instability, which helps the surface air mass to continue to rise and form small water droplets.
Thunderstorms can form in a wide variety of settings and their behaviour depends on the environment in which they develop.
They are associated with cumulonimbus clouds, which are responsible for violent atmospheric phenomena.
