When talking about La Boca in the city of Buenos Aires, people refer in the popular gergo to the characteristic neighborhood that houses the popular soccer club.

However, La Boca, the charismatic neighborhood on the outskirts of the Federal Capital, home to so many Italian immigrants (especially Genoese) who escaped from Europe, its poverty and wars, looking for a future of peace, work and prosperity, is much more than that.

It is the port of Buenos Aires with its incessant coming and going of cargo ships. But it is also the goal of so many foreign tourists eager to know Caminito Street (synonymous with tango) despite the fact that the lyrics of that song have nothing to do with the neighborhood of La Boca but with a street in northern Argentina in the province of Salta where the author was born.

And also, although less known, La Boca is the place where Benito Quinquela Martón lived and where his paintings of the port of Buenos Aires have made the world go round. Here you can find the museum that bears his name.

In this post I am going to refer to the neighborhood of yellow houses, Caminto Street and the stadium of Club Atlético Boca Juniors.

It is not the whole neighborhood of La Boca, of course. But it is, without a doubt, its most emblematic part.

Here we go!

The soccer stadium "Alberto J. Armando" popularly known as "La Bombonera".

The mythical soccer stadium of Club Atlútico Boca Juniors, which bears its nickname due to its shape like a box of chocolates, was built in 1940 and has been declared of sporting, touristic and artistic interest of the city of Buenos Aires by the local municipality.

Due to the proximity of the stands to the playing field, it has been defined by many sportsmen as the only stadium in the world where the game is experienced with greater intensity.

The spectators of the lower tiers are almost in contact with the players. In recent years it has undergone constant remodeling to improve the somfort and adapt to new technologies but without changing its traditional appearance.

La Boca is a tango neighborhood par excellence. At every step there is a couple of dancers posing for the photo with the tourists.

For this reason Caminito Street -in honor of tango- has been totally reconditioned in the last decades with a purely touristic purpose.

The traditional tenements that served at the beginning of the century as housing for Italian immigrants have been painted in all colors (similar to the Genoese neighborhoods of Italy such as Boccadasse for example) where the colors yellow, ocher and red predominate over the rest.

And the traditional houses have been replaced by stores aimed at tourists with souvenirs dedicated to the port, Caminito Street, tango and of course football with the emblematic figure of Diego Armando Maradona everywhere and Lionel Messi to a lesser extent.

The traditional neighborhood of yellow houses has been a bit marginalized from this business but it completes the traditional tour for those who want to know something more of this particular neighborhood, where the traditional and the modern are mixed.
