Ben and his wife have chosen to raise their children in the heart of a North American forest, avoiding all contact with technology and modern civilisation.

There are viewers who prefer arguments dealt with directly, explicitly, and there are other viewers who prefer the subtle, sometimes even exaggerated irony of a message (among whom I count myself). And Captain Fantastic has plenty of it. Apart from a fierce and even ruthless critique of consumerism in this modern age, not only in the USA, although the film obviously emphasises American society.

Captain Fantastic is a mix of comedy and drama, though it has more of the latter, wisely dosed and is a film that is a few years old now (it's from 2016) written and directed by Matt Ross and starring Viggo Mortensen in the title role.

The story (and its message) focuses on family man Ben Cash (starring Viggo Mortenssen) who, after the suicide of his wife, must not only take care of his children but also continue to pass on to them the principles instilled by his mother when she was still alive, with teenage children, amidst all the social pressure and bullying that this means, living on the edge of so-called "civilisation", self-sufficient and not attending school but teaching his children at home.

In this way Ben, who is to all intents and purposes an out-of-the-ordinary father, or at least far removed from what is considered a "normal father", has been living in these conditions for more than a decade, isolated with his family, cut off from modern, consumerist society, which, of course, increasingly marginalises him.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the same year 2016, and at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the award for best director in Un Certain Regard, a special section of the famous festival which translated would be "Un Certain Regard" and which screens films considered to be of interest in the Debussy room, parallel to the competition for the Palme d'Or.

Ben Cash lives with his family as far away from civilisation as possible, namely in the forests of the northwest coast of the United States, even though he is in the state of Washington, partly hunting, partly farming, living off the proceeds of small handicrafts that he sells to a merchant in the nearest town, the only chance he has to get past that self-imposed geographical-cultural barrier that delimits his world from modern civilisation.

Ben tries to educate his children in a total and perfect communion with nature, with a demanding physical and mental training, without forgetting the difficulties that modern life will surely present to them step by step.

However, there are certain changes in the routine that mark the profile of this "fantastic" family. For example, while everyone else celebrates Christmas, Ben and his family celebrate what they call "Noam Chomsky Day", in homage to the well-known thinker because, in Ben's own words, it is preferable to celebrate the day of someone with whom you share your thoughts, a real person who has done a lot for culture, rather than celebrating a "fictional character beloved by Christians", as he himself defines Jesus.

The result of this lifestyle is, in short and to summarise, a family that will learn to read with Middlemarch, in which all members will know the American constitutional amendments by heart and politically will have all the elements to discuss, with judgement, Marxism.

The children's mother, whose suicide we had anticipated, actually begins the film hospitalised as a result of a bipolar mood disorder following the birth of her first child, which has led Ben to remove her from the family.

In reality, her death by suicide marks a turning point in Ben's life as he is forced to leave the wild and natural life of the forest to face the real world, a world in which dangers and temptations abound that are absent in nature and which his children are not yet prepared to defend themselves against.

The first time the Cash family leaves their forest redoubt is to attend the mother's funeral in New Mexico and, respecting her last wishes, scatter her ashes (as a Buddhist she was to be cremated) in the drain of a public toilet.

This new, real and materialistic world they are forced to face causes Ben and his children a lot of problems, difficulties in moving around, going to school and leading a daily life with different schedules and "normal" rhythms.

On the return trip, they stop at Ben's sister Harper's house and see how many American citizens live in the so-called "civilisation" and in this case it is very close to them because they are his nephews and nieces. Waste of money, waste of food and total ignorance as they spend the day playing video games.

Ak discusses with his sister about the upbringing of his children and proposes a challenge: a question about any constitutional amendment. Her brother's kids seem to have to answer an alien question, they don't have the faintest idea what it's about.

Ben's children, on the other hand, raised in the middle of the forest, self-taught by excellence, answer him in a few seconds.

His sister is astonished and Ben and his children return to their forest knowing that he will have to find a compromise, a dividing line where both systems of life can coexist harmoniously.

After several vicissitudes and misunderstandings with his family and his wife's family, some of them accuse him of having caused their mother's illness with his extreme rigor for nature, especially Bo, the eldest son, who has been accepted in several prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Brown and MIT, through which he can have a traditional education and discover the world outside the books imposed by his father.

The film ends with his son Bo setting off on a lonely journey to discover the world that curiously begins in Namibia, while the rest of the Cash family, with Ben having begun to reconsider his ideologies, moves to a farm and the boys begin to go to school regularly.
