Traditional House North Sumatra

How are, my kind friends? On this occasion I try to write about traditional houses of North Sumatra. Thank you Indonesia Hive community. In North Sumatra there are several tribes, including the Batak tribe, the Nias tribe, they malay tribe and other tribes.

And each has it's own unique traditional house. Image of replica of a traditional sumatran house was taken at the Taman Mini Indonesia indah or Miniature Indonesia in jakarta. There are several groups of Batak ethnic groups in north Sumatra.

In terms of housing architecture, the prominent and different characteristic are especially visible between Toba Batak style houses, Karo Batak, Simalungun Batak style houses.
Traditional Toba Batak houses give a sturdy impression, because their construction is Made of logs, especially for the pillars. The Karo Batak house plan for a plural family. The clear difference between a Karo Batak house and a Simalungun Batak house a Simalungun batak house is the asymmetrical shape of the roof.


The traditional Batak Karo house is a type of mountain house that is built to provide warmth inside the house. Traditional Toba houses are know for their distinctive curved, tiered roofs, resembling an upturned boat. Traditional Toba house serve as centers of social and cultural life, with philosophical meaning reflecting humanity's relationship with nature and God.


The traditional house of the Nias people, located on Nias island, north Sumatra, is characterized by a curved roof with a high, pointed tip. The structure is built on tall pillars with wooden Walls.
Traditional Nias houses are unique because of their rectangular layout, but with curved sides and sturdy, ship like construction. The community lives in group of 30 to families in one large Residential building.


At the North Sumatra pavilion, there are also replicas of Malay ethnic buildings. Malay tribal houses, tradisional houses originating from the coastal areas of Sumatra,Kalimantan,and the Malay peninsula.

This traditional Malay house is characterized by it's high, curved built on wooden poles to protect it from moisture and animals. Traditional Malay houses are often decorated with distinctive carvings depicting the beauty of Malay cultural arts, with an open design and good ventilation.
